It’s a sad indictment of the American rightwing that it relies on inflammatory statements to enrage and then corral it’s support base with lies and defamatory statements while hiding behind what the courts have/haven’t ruled. -
It’s obviously very easy to fall into the trap of denigrating the population of a nation engaged in an unprovoked and illegal war of aggression as being stupid or worse still complicit. I feel we should resist this natural bias. Don’t fall for absurd idea that ordinary Russians aren’t able to draw accurate conclusions from the fact that as Russia engages in an illegal and totally unnecessary war with Ukrainian the Russian government blocks access to almost all social media. When they then hear their son, the son of a relative, friend or neighbor has stopped calling home from his military posting…. Well, I’m quite sure they can work it out.

The ‘travel to Bangkok/Chiang Mai’ issue is a bit more complicated than it need be. I recently helped a British friend renew his passport, the process requires the applicant or the applicant’s appointed representative to travel to Bangkok/Chiang Mai twice. Once to submit the application and again to collect the new passport. -
Biden’s administration has rolled out full vaccination to over 200 million Americans while vaccine reluctance is highest amongst people who (let me be charitable) are not going to vote Democrat. So in a sense you are correct, there is a ‘political’ incentive not to enforce mask wearing and simply let nature run its course.

Moreover, Russia’s economy cannot sustain the military it has, let alone the military it would need to maintain security by any means other than the peaceful cooperation and trade that existed before Putin trashed it. Germany alone has already raised its military budgets to exceed those of Russia. Added to which Russia is facing its first loan default on May 4th. Whatever motivated Putin it wasn’t anything to do with what was best for Russia.
