  1. Did he spot my Hua Hin plate and think 'aha'? ???? Got caught in a 'right turn only' lane in my car (five lanes heading same direction). I moved one lane to the left (completely empty, no danger, nothing illegal as far as I can see, no solid white lines or similar) and there he was suddenly in front with his hand raised. He had his pad out to write me up (with my apparent offence already sketched out on the back of it, hilarious, it's clearly his shtick at that junction). I'd been very naughty, he asked for my license. 2000 Baht at police station but he'd take 1000. Of course I was thrilled: I wonder what he'd seen when he looked at me, mid 60s, and my British wife of same age, a small lottery win? ???? I said police station, several times, as he tried for 500 Baht. He indicated in that case he'd keep my license. With calm eyes fixed on his and outstretched hand I indicated that won't happen. He meekly handed it back and asked for 200 Baht. I told him I'd give him 100 Baht which he was very happy about. Without quibbling. To be honest I prefer to allow everyone a little face at the end of the day, no matter what, I think it's a good attitude. As I handed it over I pointed at myself and said 'not kwai'. He smiled, nodded and wai'd. We both had been smiling (-ish) and totally polite throughout. Before the crusty barstool grumps start up about me puffing up my chest, I'd point out I'm only indicating (again) the correct way to handle these situations for readers that haven't experienced this yet. It was fun, two guys sparring over very little. ???? Cheers
  2. I've got another great bit of info: shops that are closed on Sunday will probably have more visitors when they open on Monday. Because people want to buy stuff. Just be careful when planning your shopping trips.
  3. Life is a continual process of loss. This is what I understand now. Buddhists try not to get too attached; to people, things, places. A bit late for me I'm afraid.
  4. Weirdly this is on my mind. My wife has cancer and the prognosis is uncertain. Probably will be so for a few more months. She's my age, retired. I don't see any life without her and so I have no idea. Been together since teenagers so we're like one single person. No close family apart from her very old parents back home, so no real reason to leave Thailand if it comes to it. Will life fall apart? Who knows, watch this space. I don't see myself cohabiting with another woman of any nationality. Well, you asked.
  5. I repeat, they are the same in that it's being assumed that the money is not/will not be used by the government for the purpose for which it was collected. I'm not sure why you're grinding my gears other than it's Saturday and you're very bored. I wont reply again as this is simple fact., whatever the differences. ????

  7. They are both effectively taxes, and NI is not used for the purpose for which it's collected.
  8. They both also have different names, pedant, why didn't you point that out too.... ???? They are both taxes which are not/will not be used for the purposes for which the are purportedly collected. So yes.
  9. Do you have a name for that show? I'd love to try to dig it up? Edit: I found it - The Embassy on Channel 9 ????
  10. Like National Insurance contributions in the UK. Same same.
  11. I've found farang can be 2 or 3 times Thai price for work involving walls, drains and foundations. But why compare apples with oranges? Just get several quotes and go with who you feel comfortable with, bearing in mind that for big jobs you need close and accurate communication or risk major problems.
  12. I'm not smart, but happy. As someone who has bought a sumptuous three piece living room suite just because I walked past it, and on another occasion a huge store shop window definitely-not-for-sale Christmas tree display (the latter leaving a massive space in the window but a very gratified window dresser) I'm living, breathing proof of the existence of people who do not know that they are going shopping. And I'm happier for it. ????
  13. Obviously too old to consider a manbag 'de rigeuer'. ????
  14. The problem I suppose is (as I thought, my memory served me correctly) that it was very widely referred to as a ban, as this article from a national newspaper in January 2021 demonstrates: "The ban on single-use plastic bags was the first step of the country's long-term plastic waste management plan, which will include measures to stop using other items such as cap seals, plastic cups and straws as well as polystyrene food containers."
  15. I take you at your word. You must be more aware of current legislation.
  16. If may have been 3 or 4 years ago that this issue was raised by the government, but my memory seems to be that word 'ban' was certainly used. I appreciate that it's probably like the ban on people traveling in pickup truck beds, which seems to have worked well.
  17. A corruption of ferenghee (or similar), the terms has been in use for 500-odd years: Arabic and Persian: 1500s firingi, 1600s fringe, frangee, 1700s feringy, firingy, 1800s faringee, ferenghi, feringhee; ferangi.( Frequency (in current use): Show frequency band information Etymology: An eastern adoption of Frank n.1, with Arabic ethnic suffix -i; in Arabic faranjī, in Persian farangī.
  18. This clickbait is a joke. I don't know a single farang who is upset by the term. Go back to sleep.
  19. If your speedo said 92 you'd have been doing less than 90, they're made that way. ????
  20. Throwiny anything at a motorcyclist is just stupid. *dousing
  21. I'm not doubting your veracity, you didn't need to go to the effort of proving anything. As has already been said by others, rules change in Thailand, they often exist for very little reason and change for less. I think we've said all that can be said.
  22. Yeah if you cant beat them. And if you believe I'm wrong then prove it. I know what rules I read in 2016 and why I left my golf clubs behind. If you can't then it's just your opinion which you can't defend. Why would I make it up? ????
