  1. And what-- one year later-- is the answer to the topic question?

Is it still Tattoo? And is the price the same...?

Whatever phone it is, what price can it be got at MBK or CentralWorld?

    Thank you!

The Tatoo is now obsolete, and has been replaced by HTC by the Wildfire, and now Wildfire S, I don't know about MBK prices but here in Chiang Mai it's sold 8900 bahts at HTC shop... looks to me like an honest Android phone... The Wellcom A99 is another possible choice for the same kind of price.

  2. Aside from throwing things and ordering dogs to attack...... On the apparently remote chance that a dog does bite someone on a public street.... Who should pay for the required rabies series of injections?

    MSPain

I was bitten by a dog while leisurely riding my bike in our mooban. A small group of 4 or 5 little dogs ( poms and poodles ) "escaped" their house under the very nose of the owners ( who did absolutely nothing ). One of them bit my ankle, it was so sudden I could not even see which one... We went to ask the owners if they had any certificates for vaccinations , they had none... We made a point of asking them to pay for the first 3 shots of vaccines ( out of 5 ..) , they had the nerve to ask for a discount and we had to insist several time to get our money back, which they paid very reluctantly. It was not really for the money, but to try to instill a bit of responsibility in them.

  3. Thanks Phil.

I realize I could have and should Googled but I thought their might eiher be some sort of especially kind expert around or someone who knew of the perfect way to find out what I need.

If I do find a the ideal resource I'll post about it.

No problems. I guess short of knowing how your room is configured, no one can really help you here, I am afraid there are no magic solutions. But , like for stereo, placement of your 5.1 speakers can influence a lot on the quality of your setup.

The best I think would be for you to experiment , and tweak until you find the best solution, and bliss when watching your videos and listening your music... Take into account the WAF ( wife acceptance factor ) ... :)

  4. There are a lot of advices on internet, here are the first 2 that showed up when I made a google search :

    http://www.dolby.com/consumer/setup/speaker-setup-guide/index.html

    http://www.crutchfield.com/S-8WAklVsIPlw/learn/learningcenter/home/speaker_placement.html

It depends on a lot of parameters, the size of your room, the furniture around, can you easily put cables around to connect your rear speakers ... etc etc ...

I too used to have a basic home theater ( Onkyo/Mordaunt-Short), but after I have moved house, I simply couldn't set it up again, so I sold it and switched back to a 2.1 stereo system.

Let us know if you find a solution...

  5. "If you could post back how things go with the Streak after you have had it a bit longer , that would be great

    Thanks

    TL "

After a few days with it, I must say I like it a lot. I bought it for the big screen and it is just fine. However font size in some applications is still very small for my dwindling eyesight, which makes it sometimes difficult to read.I also have to get used to the keyboard, which I find less practical to use than the one on my iPhone.

It will take more days and weeks before I fully master the machine and Android, but I am happy I took the plunge ...

  6. Wow are the dell streaks expensive in Thailand. I'm visiting the states at the moment and just got new i5 sandy bridge laptop bundled with unlocked dell streak 5 for less than 20,000 TOTAL. The phone hasn't shipped yet, but if I get it before I leave looks like I will sell it in Thailand instead of the USA ( going rate only ~$350 here).

I should stock up on a couple ipad2, the grey market in Thailand is twice the cost, but how easy to find a buyer, is it possible to make a quick sale to a shop?

Can you provide any links? When I check the Dell website I see the Streak 5 for $549.99.

    http://www.dell.com/...obile-streak/pd

I think the iPad 2 is pretty much back-ordered for ~ 4 weeks in the U.S. as of today.

Mine was $99 unlocked with laptop purchase, but the promotion has ended.

They have had it for various price in the past, just google

dell streak $199 unlocked no contract

dell streak $399 unlocked no contract

    $449

    $404

Just bought a red Streak from Dell shop in Chiang Mai Airport Plaza, 18900 bahts with 16Gb micro sd card. Impossible to find a case or silicone skin here, but found some on eBay.

I have to get used to Android, after 3 years with an iPhone. I can't make the internet tethering work so far, but very pleased with my purchase.

  7. I have a Dell Streak 5 which I got off of dell.com. I love it. It's unlocked, has android 2.2 and is a phone and a tablet.

I have used it on my last three trips to thailand with a DTAC sim which have a phone number and a data plan. Fast and unlocked great for

email even in most of Issan. In Pattaya/Bangkok/Jomtien it's just as fast as my DTAC aircard for internet. The built in wifi

is really handy...lot's of unlocked wifi all over the place. personally I love android....tons of free app's

This thing actually fits in your back pocket and has a 5 inch screen with a great battery life. Instant gmail almost the same as a

Blackberry. No I am not Michael Dell....just happy I found this thing as I travel around LOS only with a backpack...time for me to

get rid of the netbook that I travel with.....

I am also leaning towards a Dell Streak 5 to replace my decaying iPhone 3G, its price seems to have dropped significantly to be around 19000 bahts now.

Has anybody bought one in Chiang Mai ? Where ? Is internet tethering working ?

    Thanks

    Phil

  8. Hi

Until a few weeks ago, internet tethering was working well on my jailbroken iPhone 3G ( still under version 3.0 ), I still have the option in my settings, but I can't make it work anymore. I am using AIS 12Call.

    Any ideas ?

    Thanks.

  9. You should probably check out all the videos on Youtube, they have everything from unboxing, to set-up to modding. Some of the comparison videos are quite enlightening.

FWIW some are complaining about the HTC Desire HD, specifically about the LCD screen, which is much different from the (Super-)AMOLED screens on other phones, and that the battery may require frequent charging.

For pilou , Dell have an unlocked 16GB version of the Streak on sale now for $399.99 (from $549.99). That's a pretty decent price. The Dell Venue was just announced at CES so no pricing or availability as of yet. It looks like it will only be sold unlocked.

Thanks, I read that the Streak 5 price was dropping in the US, but prices on eBay have not dropped . Anyway after a bad experience with an Iphone 3Gs purchased on eBay, I am a bit reluctant to buy another smartphone there.

For the battery problem on the Desire HD, it seems that there is a way to improve it by " calibrating " the battery . Snakeoil ?

Galaxy Tab is another option, yes you can use it as a phone ( smalltalk or BlueTooth ), but it is not so easy to carry it around. One of my friend has it, and he told me he was hardly using his Nexus 1 ( another nice smartphone ) anymore.

  10. Hi

The Wellcom A88 has been out for a while, I bought one last April, played with it , had it updated to 2.1 and gave it to my son, great little phone, good to discover Android. As far as I know, there is no official upgrade to 2.2 planned, but there might be some rom available on internet. The WePad Wellcom A800 tablet is also running on 2.2 but it's not a phone ( although you can phone with it, but being a 7 inches machine does not make it very "pocketable " ... )

The I-mobile 858 is running Android 2.2 and is also already available, at a similar price, around 8500 bahts, but I haven't tried it.

You can find a lot of infos on internet and particularly on droidsans.com, but be warned, it's all in Thai ...

  11. Hi there

If you pass Icon a few hundred meters, you will find a Samsung Service center, if you you go in that dead end soi, there is a small HiFi shop called ST Audio ( on your left ).

I brought him my vintage Quad 44 vintage pre amp ( bought on eBay ) with a balance problem, and he had it fixed in a very short time. He also has a small stock of 2nd hand and new stuff, and can also order anything for you from Bangkok for a very small fee ( I bought him some new Mordaunt Short speakers I found on Piyanas website and they arrived within 3 days at Piyanas price + a few hundred bahts ), I also bought my current 2nd hand AV Onkyo receiver from him and it's still working today. A very nice chap, with limited English though ...

    Good luck

  12. Hi

When we decided to buy a new car last year ( we also are in Chiang Mai ), we settled for a top blue Jazz, but it would have taken 2 to 3 months waiting. Eventually , after many phone calls and inquiries, we found one available in Bangkok ( orderd by a client who was denied the loan ) where we had to go to fetch it.No discount, and the usual bundle of freebees . We are super happy with the car, just what we need. The paddle shift is very nice .

May I add that we first dealed with Poy Luang dealership, but we since have changed to the Mae Rim road one ( in front of Nakornping hospital ), where the service is better.

For your license, it might be better with a business visa, but I think it is possible to get one on a tourist visa, you have to check at the office on Hang Dong road. Once you have all documents, it is fairly easy and quick .

    Good luck.

  13. I basically agree with the OP's list of pros and cons, but would like to add one flaw (unless it's my own flaw. Then please enlighten me.)

I would like to install a paid application, but according to HTC's info, this is only available in some countries. I guess in Thailand it's not, but there is no explicit list of countries. Anyway, the "Market" program only features free applications.

So how can I buy and install applications?

I guess you have to root your phone and use Market Enabler.

  14. How times a change hey, anyone remember one of the first mobile phones, the brick we called it...Motorola Dynatac..

But I wouldnt have wanted to have to carry one of the other mobile phones around... :)

Yes, I remember the old bricks. This is what a friend of mine used to lug around mid 80s.

Glad to hear about the Nokia N8. I too have been thinking about upgrading, my 3 year old Nokia N73 to either a N97mini or the X6.

Guess I'll now wait until the N8 comes out.

I used to have an Ericsson that looked like that in 1984, as I could not get a land line ( it took 7 years..).We never carried it around, it must have weighed 5 or 6 kilos... I was number 25 in Chiang mai, and paid a fortune for it, although i don't remember how much exactly...

  15. Hi

You can donate blood at Nakorn Ping hospital on Mae Rim road, ground floor room 104, a bit tricky to find ( the room...), and almost impossible to park a car there on weekends.... I've been there many times, and I always try to bring a friend along with me...
