  1. Root it! If you want to explore the full potential of your Android phone you need to root it. I have a HTC Hero with the MoDaCo rom. Market-enabler works great.

Hi and thanks for your answer.

I have jailbroken 3 iphones ( but I'll buy the next one in Thailand unlocked and probably won't jailbreak it...), so I'm not against rooting at all...

What ROM do you recommend , have you got a preferred site or method, and is there a way to reverse the process... Sorry , like I said, i am new to Android... If it's relevant, my phone is a Wellcom A88.

    Many thanks.

Anybody in Chiang Mai has found a place able to root an Android phone ?

  2. Hi all

I have bought a ( cheap ) Android phone to explore its possibilities ( I normally use an iphone 3G ). A few problems so far, but all in all, very pleased with my purchase.

I quickly realized that in Thailand, I don't have access to paid apps, only the free ones are available .

Is there any way to circumvent this without rooting the phone ? There is an app called "market enabler " but seems to be only available for rooted devices. My phone has Android 1.6 Donut version.

    Thanks. :)

  3. I have bought the WellcoM A88 in Chiang Mai, could not find it in Bangkok last weekend ( seems to sell quite well here), interesting little phone, I was not used to Android, and am still learning. It looks like a HTC Hero at a fraction of the price, but the finishing is quite good, and the screen and page browsing quite OK too.

First problem, when making a phone call, the screen turns off, seems to be a software problem from what I have found on internet. Also some issues with my Wifi, but it's working now. According to the seller, it will be possible to upgrade to Android 2.1 soon at WellcoM center.

  4. Picked up a no-name 1900 ma unit in Tukcom for 850 baht. A friend with an iPhone 3GS used a 1000 ma unit to charge it; his new toy was toasted, dead in the water. The salesman, who heard that a friend had a problem asked if the iPhone was 3GS and explained these 600 baht units don't support that model.

I have related in another post how one of these little thing ( bought on eBay ) fried my 3Gs, the phone just stopped working after a few seconds, battery became super hot, and that was it.... I personally will never use another.

  5. My 2nd attempt to post this, sorry if the 1st one lands here sometime..

I am another happy iPhone's user :) , but I have been wanting to try an Android phone for a while now. I am interested in trying the Wellcom A88, which looks nice on paper, and on videos I've been able to find on internet.

It runs Android Donut 1.6, but I could not find anywhere whether it would be upgradeable to version 2.1

Anybody here owns one, or has any opinion ? What about Android , for those who have tried it ?

    Many thanks.

How can I remove this double post ?

  6. You can enable tethering on any carrier without jailbreaking your iPhone. Using your iPhone and Safari, go to help.benm.at and follow the instructions.

Having done that, I'm able to use tethering via USB or Bluetooth on my AIS service.

Hi Bubba..Do you have the same problem I have ? Every time I try the tethering by enabling internet sharing in settings ( AIS as well ), I end up having to reconnect to that site and redo it all, and then I loose my MMS option, I have to re modify the settings ( "internet " to "multimedia" ) to get MMS back . But the tethering is working fine...

  7. I bought a little chargeable gizmo from Seacon Square for 450 baht. If I'm going out and I realise that the iPhone hasn't much charge in it I'll bring it with me and plug it in while travelling. You can use the phone while charging.

I bought one of these on eBay and I fried my iphone 3Gs with it, it simply stopped 5 seconds after connecting it, the battery became very hot for 15/20 minutes, and then it never restarted...

  8. I also have a pair of Mordaunt-Short MS902i, as my rear speakers though.Excellent value for price. The rest of my speaker setup in also from MS.

Visit this website to have an idea of prices in Thailand

Even if I don't go with this brand, the website is a real find. Did you use this store?

    Hi

I have been to some of their showrooms in Bangkok, but as I live in Chiang Mai, I go to my favorite HiFi shop with a print of what I want , and they order it for me from Piyanas for a (very) little fee, I believe they also deliver throughout Thailand. They also answer mails..

    Good luck.

  9. Hi

I have a now outdated Canon PowerShot A60, bought in France many years ago. The CCD failed a few months ago, I brought it to Denchai in Chiang Mai, it has cost me 500 bahts for shipment to Bangkok, it was back after a few weeks with a new CCD and new firmware, at no other cost, even it was long out of guarantee and not bought in Thailand.

I was quite impressed by Canon customer care, and my old camera is still working very well to this day.

  10. Hi all.

I went to Airport Plaza ( Chiang Mai ) this afternoon, Zoom shop had the HTC Hero on display, they must have received it recently. The price is 22900 bahts ( not sure VAT included or not )

I did not have time to talk to the vendor, just handled briefly the phony display unit and grabbed a leaflet before leaving.

Has anybody here bought one yet ? It looks nice and I am curious to know if Android is as good as it seems.

I will probably buy one soon, but I would like to read some users feedback ...

    Cheers.

  11. My room is SUPER small.. it's my office/computer room, and must not be bigger than 4 sqm ... :) I use the Carnival with this :

    http://cgi.ebay.com/HLLY-TAMP-10-Class-T-A...id=p4999.c0.m14

And my Iphone or Wifi radio as a source.

I am in Chiang Mai, so I went to my favorite shop here to order the pair of MS Carnival 1, just had to pay an extra 200 bahts for delivery to CM ...

My main system is also based on Mordaunt Short's speakers. Good value for money ( at least for me...)

Piyanas has several show rooms in Bangkok, look at their website. They also answer mails ( unlike many other websites who don't bother ) and their prices are fair.

    Cheers.

  12. Hi

I suppose you can still find a 2nd hand - first generation iphone if you shop around, although I haven't seen that many myself ( I am in Chiang Mai, I think you would have more shops selling them in BGK )

If you don't want to jailbreak your phone, you have to find a factory unlocked one. If not , then I believe jailbreaking is necessary to have it unlocked, after that you can just use any sim card.I have 3 iphones ( well, 2 now as my 3Gs just died..) and all of them have been working fine with my AIS sim. I bought my iphones from USA on eBay and they all work here.

I have never used a 2G but it must have less memory and a slower processor. They must be cheaper too, try to find one, and if you like it, upgrade later to a 3G or 3Gs...

    Phil

  13. Did you get a replacement phone?

Unfortunately, I bought my 3Gs on eBay from the US ( couldn't wait ), and I don't think I can exchange it here without a proper receipt, which I have asked from my vendor, but no answers so far... :)

I will try to have the battery replaced first, and if the damages are more extensive, probably buy a new one, as I still think it's the best phone I have ever owned. Only this time I will buy it here, from True if they have it in stock :D ... Or maybe the HTC Hero to test Android. I have upgraded my HTC Touch HD to WM 6.5 and I am not impressed, beautiful phone and screen, but WM just doesn't even come close to Iphone OS.

    Phil

  14. I also noticed the 3 Gs battery life was not that good compared to the 3G , even with everything off. Anyway 2 days ago, the iphone ( one month old ) stopped working completely while I was listening music, 35 % battery life remaining, and I have not been able to recharge nor restart it. The battery became very hot for 15/20 minutes, then nothing ...

AIS also happily sold me a 3G subscription ( in Chiang Mai ) before I discovered irt was useless, I since reverted it to EDGE/ GPRS.

  16. Hi

Chiang Mai is not the best place for HIFI enthousiasts...

There is a small shop called ST Audio that does have 2nd hand kits, although I doubt they have any ADCOM Or Bryston in stock ... But you might get lucky . They are located on Manee Nopparat road, in a small dead end street near the Samsung service center ( outer side of the moat between computer plaza and Chang Pheuk gate ) The owner is a very nice chap, he may help you locate what you want or order it from Bangkok . Phone is ( or was ..) 053 218289 .

There is also a little shop in Central Kad Suan Keow who has a few ready made crossover filters on display, I think on the 3rd or 4th floor, not far from the entrance to Central where they sell fridges and fans ( sorry not to be more precise than that ..), he also has some 2nd hand amplifiers imported from Japan ( some are 110 v. ), and speakers kits.

    Good luck.

    Phil
