"Bangkok charm" what charm? if you visit for a couple of days and enjoy some crappy street food and riding in a noisy tuk tuk, breathing in the obnoxious filth of the city - great, then get away to somewhere where you are not fighting traffic & filth ? Doubt those that are moaning about the "loss" actually live or have lived there!

Been coming here or living here for over 50 years mate and yes Bangkok had its charm.as did Saigon Singapore  and Hong Kong of the 1960s and 1970s. Granted these cities was far less safe and had less places to find western food but they drew you into living outside of your established bubble and to experience their way of existence in life. This was the charm of Asia  though a bit different for the different cities but you could learn to love it if you just let yourself feel it.

As I am the first one to post in this thread, may I have the honour of suggesting that there was a collaboration between the smugglers and the soldiers and a brown envelope was involved ?

When "ALL Elude Capture" your theory is probable right also there can now be a different count of the amount of drugs seized, thus leaving some to be resold to the drug dealers.

that is their overall 'style' they want thailand to be the same as a military barracks; no independent thought or action; just obey , unquestioning

Normally after the (seemly) required coup every few years the military relents and once again a sudo democracy is formed via elections with the new government going back to the established status quo. This time the military stayed much longer then before because of the military's required new election laws to be able to keep elected PMs or their families from becoming simi dictators as was experienced recently  .This military seems to continue to show their extreme lack of knowledge of governing a country.I would think that after elections the new government will relent to the people and we will have our charm of Bangkok once again.

One of my neighbours (Moved-out 2 years ago) used to take his meter off the post and leave it hanging by the wires.  I imagine the meter didn't record in that position, or perhaps he used magnets; I don't know.  He'd put it back on the post 2 days before the meter reading man came, and remove it the evening after the meter had been read.  He was so blatant about it, month-in, month-out.  His wife used to run-out to collect the ticket before anybody had a chance to see it, clutching it to her chest in case she dropped it.

The other neighbours in the soi knew what he was doing, but just ignored it.  One of the neighbours said it wasn't worth the hassle to report him, and advised me to ignore it also; good advice - don't get involved.

A good neighbor would have shared the secret. In Vietnam we used heavy magnets on the meters. There are many ways but here electricity is so cheap why bother ?
