If I recall from my backpacker days. Red bus #5 will get you point to point.

Silom is just sad. Stay well clear. Far better, safer places to spend your money.

No more bus 5.  But, I appreciate you not being a sanctimonious <deleted>.

so ….  no passport, pissing in the bushes,  intoxicated,  and you didn't feel safe …..

I think you should stay in Nonthaburi …..  Bangkok is too big for you.

Do you carry your passport, clown? And no one goes to Silom to club.

Been loads of cops around last few days due to ASEAN meeting often just standing around awaiting some VIPs to pass in traffic. Cheers!

Yes, most definitely.  But it was 2am.  And something else unusual.. the cop approaching me was about 50 yo+, kind of Burmese looking.. bloodshot eyes, yellow teeth... seems odd that it wasn't more of the Hitler Youth types.

  4. It seems like they intentionally stuck it back in there, so it would not be accessible by foot.  OTOH, the Bang Su SRT is steps from the Bang Su MRT... and the train is 500 times safer.  This time of year, third class with the windows down should be fine, but as always, avoid weekend and holiday warriors, when traveling in LOS and most other places, too.

  5. Before you tell me I was dumb for not taking a cab from the hotel.. Let me add, I was going to see if there was any late nite action near KSR, where I could catch a bus almost to my door.. and it was really a nice night to he out walking.. that was more the issue than saving 300 THB on taxi fare.  And if you think you are any safer from stops in a taxi, I would say the opposite is true.

  6. I saved 150 THB buy paying the 400 fee at bbl, then fidelity charged me 20 usd... would have paid 750 extra to save 600....1150 covers fees at the other end.

The lady at the Thapae Rd. branch of bbl is quite competent and will tell you what you can and can't do, and how long it will take. Sitting at the desk on the left, as you enter from the front. They <deleted> up one of mine at the sainted KSK branch.. but interest rates are much lower now, so there is far less incentive for them to try and sit on your money for a few days.

  7. That's why they recommend putting on the balcony and not the wall.  I noticed on the wall mounts, some use the rubber bushings, while others don't.. Exact same brands.  I would expect any non inverter to bang the wall a bit at start-up.  But solving mechanical noise issues is anything but a priority, here.  Basic service should make it as quiet as possible... for nominal costs.. but you gotta visually check for things like trash or birds nest in your system.

  8. I would work part time, too, but not going to mess with relatively easy extensions.  Between the language schools that don't get them for anyone, and the government's schools that feel the need to control your life...it is a rare bird.  I have heard of the uni jobs being more slack on leaving campus...

I see, not sure if it's from hat yai but i absolutely love the yellow rice with a chickenleg...it's from the south i bet.

When there's a wedding/furniture fair in impact muang thong there's always a vendor from the south selling that dish, but she's famous my wife told me she won some awards and that's why it costs 80 baht.

But i've never seen them selling pork, that must be a thailand only i guess.

The dish you had i can easy eat 2 or 3 of them haha.

I complimented mine with a 20 THB bowl of noodles, that were also tight.  I just returned from the US.. gained 6 kg... but was doing steak and potatoes every day. Good to lighten up.

When I had a real job at a big corporation, it was not unusual to hear about some guy retiring and doing nothing.  They usually ended up dead of very unhealthy... nope, keep moving, keep active, and at least get a hobby.

Yeah, my point is basically that they at least had a place to go, and a circle of friends... even if it was just a casino and fellow gamblers, but there has always been soom good comradery with the gamblers, and unlike the machines and tables, there is no limit to the amount of information you can try to absorb on the racing business. Just enough to keep their brains active.

  11. When I lived in Laughlin Nevada, I noticed a lot of very old guys, like 75+, whose entire lives revolved around sitting at the race book all day and betting a couple bucks per race.  All had decent pensions and enjoyed living in a low COL area.  Certainly would be better than the various <deleted> 9to5 jobs most had done, and as a group, they seemed to do better than most retirees I have encountered.

Did those muslims sell nice kebab/shawarma or other spiced up meat? They are the best in making meat tasty. Or maybe rendang beef or chicken?

The place I went was Muslim, they also had a beef and pork dinner deal.. 69 I think.  Some of the Muslim fried chicken is hit and miss, never terrible, but often the best is by people from the South, same as America.  In CM, this guy had a cart, Hat Yai, chicken that outstanding.  My donut place is run by people from Hat Yai, too.

  13. Looks like the Portlandia crowd has relocated from CM to BKK.  The Africans and Indians annoy the <deleted> out of me on Sukhumvit, thought it was worth mentioning they are not at the Owl.  Catholics?  Didn't see any crying children.  21 years here, off and on, and never seen farang refer to a non- white person.

Dinner was 49 THB.. would be worth a trip back just for the BBQ sauce.

What about all the new lines under construction?  Is there anything in place that says they all have to have a shared ticketing system, at least?  Would be easier to make that part of the terms rather than trying to retroactively make it happen.

I already have three separate cards for my commute - ARL, MRT, BTS - and it's bloody annoying.

joe, what kind of card do you get for mrt ?  can you pay with cc?

  15. Looking at the prepaid options on MRT... other than the 30 THB administrative fee for MRT plus card, is there any difference in the two?  I noticed BTS takes a big variety of credit cards for their advance purchase, what about MRT?  Do either of these tack on a fee for cc use?  Oh, and that thing was like Hitler's Boxcars last night at 9pm..got on at Asok, didn't get a seat till Lad Prao, and it was packed again at Tao Poon... some good lookers on it for sure, but I don't see it as a viable way to get to and from work during rush hour, 10 times per week... just my two Baht..

Just wondering what type of visa those people only spending part of the year (6 - 8 months) In Thailand find most useful, given medical insurance and money in the bank requirement?

Insurance isn't required for those on extensions.  Very rarely, have I heard of anyone having a problem using a retirement extension to live half the year here..maybe even more rare than someone being told fixed deposits aren't allowed.  But, even if you work online here 50 hours per week, and work 70 hours per week back home.. the one and only answer to ever give about your occupation is Retired.. because by their logic, retirement extensions are for those, who are retired.. why would you ever contradict that to immigration?
