  1. It's normal that they visit foreigners, especially when it's the first Non-O just to make sure that you're really living there.

i wouldn't be concerned as you might find somebody who can give you a small amount just for the time to have it on your account.

It also happened to me 13 years ago that they visited us and the cops really looked like some drug addicts. We made jokes about them when they suddenly introduced themselves as Immigration police....

After knowing them for a few years we found out that they only have a little amount of money for gasoline and only do some visits until the Diesel money's gone.

Our neighbor, a teacher had to write a detailed report how long we're staying there, when we moved in and and and...

The visit was a side issue, my point being they said my wife could top up the 40,000 from our rubber sales. They call in when they are rounding up illegal Burmese. I'm just lucky that way.

  2. We had an immigration police visit last week. They noted my visa was almost up, and asked my wife if I'd applied yet. She told them with the GBP down I was below the monthly income. He told her if 40,000 was in the bank it was OK, even though, now it's too late for 3 months worth of 40,000 baht per month. Is this bs, wife even called the local immigration boss. He confirmed it, but I'm sceptical.

  3. For the main funeral event, many around here pay into a fund at the BAAC Agricultural bank for you city boys. Any ideas how much they payout? There is a scam also on a similar vein. The wife took over an account for her mum. This woman started turning up, at 1st once every couple of weeks. Someone died in a village a few miles away. 100 baht. That got to 2 or 3 times a week, and 2 or 3 people died. She was told not to come back.

  4. Up to you depends on the situation.. At it's most serious, its like when a Western woman says "Go ahead" and you know it's a challenge, not permission. I think that's what the Op:s mate was getting.

  5. Not precisely on topic but i wish there was some provision for sky burials or natural organic burials in thailand. my wish would be for my corpse to decompose naturally and return to the soil in the earth in a natural way. in this way, my organic matter can provide nourishment to other creatures during decomposition and then come "back to life" in the beauty of a plant or tree. there are cemateries in the west that place the unadorned corpse in a shallow burial to facilitate this natural decomposition.

a sky burial, where the corpse is left out for scavengers to feed on is another natural alternative. another attractive option is some places mix the creamation remains with cement to make large "reef-balls" that are dropped into the ocean to make or rehabilitate artificial coral reefs. all of these options seem preferable to being pumped full of preservatives and left in a box in the ground to slowly putrify into some mushy goo.

Indeed. Enough of the burning, there's enough hot air in this world already!

To quote Neil deGrasse Tyson: I would request that my body in death be buried not cremated, so that the energy content contained within it gets returned to the earth, so that flora and fauna can dine upon it, just as I have dined upon flora and fauna during my lifetime.

Might be available in Mongolia if any there still follow the old religion.

  6. You can have your ashes scattered at sea by the Thai navy. My friend did this a couple of years ago. They (the Navy) offer a nice burial at sea ceremony using a Navy ship and honor guard. I don't recall what his wife paid but it was very reasonable. Anyone can do this, Thai or farang. There is a Navy office in Sattahip that arranges it.

Often wondered what happened to my wife's cousin's ashes. He was a TRN ship's Captain. He got the full military works in Songkla.

  7. One local wedding we went to, they courted for over 25 years. Her father set a high sin sot price, his family could not pay. Her father kept finding would be husbands, and she would point blank refuse. This went on until the father died. The mother was getting old, and she realised her daughter would wait her out too. So the married, the husband just had to pay for the party. I'd say that was a love match.

  8. One thing I do of we are picking someone up is tell her to make sure they are ready. Anything above a 5 minute wait is not appreciated. We turned up and they take that as the cue to shower, then pack.

  9. Just got back from a visa extension application in Ranong. Only difference was they required my bank book copying. However tourist extensions were asked for FB name, email address. Travel plans/history this vacation. If renting an house etc. Proof of address. That caught out one man today. How the holiday was financed, if ATM, the name of the bank the card was issued by.
