What does make it a little more complicated though is if the wife's Thai passport is in her maiden name, and the UK one in her married name !  Under current rules it won't be possible to renew the UK passport in that situation.

You do love to make things complicated for yourself don't you.  If the surnames had been changed when they were supposed to be you wouldn't be in this pickle now.  Self inflicted, no sympathy

  2. As far as i can see there's nothing to worry about.  I have been in Thailand for 7 years on retirement extension.  I sold my property in UK  and gave up UK residence when i came to live here and informed Barclays bank of my new address in Thailand.  I have a current account and cash ISA with Barclays, they even send new debit and credit cards by post to my Thai address.  I also have UK premium bonds, never been a problem

I'm an expat from UK living in Thailand for many years on a retirement extension. If I want to take a two week holiday to, say, Vietnam, will I just be able to get a re-entry permit before travel and be able to return without having to get a Thailand Pass, insurance etc.?

My circumstances are same as yours and i travel in/out of Thailand regularly.

You still need to buy insurance (10,000usd) and apply for Thailand pass. It's much easier to get the pass before you leave Thailand if you know your return date

But would that apply to me having a re entry permit and being on retirement extensions?

Yes, your medical insurance cover must be valid till the end of your current extension of stay. Mine is September 19th. When i bought it the figure was $50,000, (since been reduced to $20,000), it cost me 15,125 baht for 6 months cover

So then you were far-sghted, not near-sighted?

I had extreme myopia (>-10.0 diopters, legally blind without glasses). Got an excellent result from Lasik in 2000 and now, going on 22 years later, still excellent.

Both my long and short sight were very poor. As i said, i was refused laser correction and that's why i opted for lens transplants.  Another advantage lens transplants have over laser is, there's a good chance that laser correction may have to be repeated in the future, whereas with transplants, if i live to be 100 (doubtful) my eyes will be as good on my 100th birthday as they are today, also i can't get cataracts later in life, a cataract can grow on your natural lens but it can't grow on a plastic lens.

  6. In 2010 i bought a Bosch washing machine from Homepro in Pattaya.  In 2020 it broke down and i had to have the circuit board replaced.  I paid around 16,000 for the machine originally and paid 8,500 to have the board replaced.  I wish i hadn't bothered as not all the features (temperature settings) on the new board work.  Just waiting for the machine to pack up completely so we can buy a new one.  Very unreliable repair service on any product in Thailand, apart from that, things like washing machines are so cheap it's false economy to have them repaired

  7. I'm having a problem trying to create new content for some reason so i'll just tag on here to ask a question.

I'm outside Thailand at the moment and my 90 day report is due on 14th Feb and i won't be back in time, i've never missed or been late for a 90 day report before.  Will i have to do my 90 day report within 24/48 hours of returning to Thailand?

    Thanks in advance

  8. I wore glasses and then contact lenses for 32 years.  I had been refused laser surgery twice because my prescription was too high and then 3 different friends told me about Rutnin eye hospital in Bangkok where they had all had Intra Ocular Lens Transplants and were all very happy.  I took their advice, made enquiries and had the transplants 5 years ago, best thing i've ever done, no glasses or lenses since then. Simple painless procedures carried out by a Thai lady surgeon called Dr. Nisa (i may be wrong about the spelling).

This is by far superior to any laser treatment.
