Well that are not politician in that sense....and there is not much money to be made as senator.
But that it is a bad solution to appoint them is agreed already....
Look at China, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia....they all don't have elected governments but do well. Venezuela has more oil than Saudi Arabia....elected Socialists.
Hitler was elected and in a coalition...sure his voter would have been angry if there would have been an unelected senate that blocked him.My point is...it is not all black and white: elected wonderful and great; not elected: evil.....
Usually democracy works better but there are also a lot exceptions....
"Do well" in what respect? Do well for who?

It's 2023. The only people who still need cash are criminals and folks who refuse to let go of archaic methods and probably still write checks ('Murica, lol). We can afford to leave those types behind us. Unnecessary baggage.
Seriously?
IMHO - a load of horse manure, full of prejudice and in complete denial of reality on the ground, ignorant, insulting

Interesting - the diving tourists got charged for an offence that carries a sentence of up to 2 years jail and/or a 200'000 Baht fine ......
while the dive company and their dive instructors got away with a proverbial wai.
Just wondering whether or not the Chinese have been instructed not to Interfere with marine life and the possible consequences of doing that under thai law prior to the dive.

Apparently he was the aggressor.
Really?
Probably yes ...... After the van driver horned on end, tailgatet their car for some distance until both stopped at a red-light. The van driver then got out of his car and approached the the guys to ever so gentlemanly make them aware of an alleged driving error on their part a while back. To give him credit, he did not carry a machete, iron rod, gun or similar weaponry to get his point across.
Nothing further.

Where is there supposed to be or have been any influence on popular opinion or on broadcaster policy?
Any democratic constitutional court in the world would not even accept such a case for review.
But not in Thailand.
I fully agree - but judging from the past - disqualifying Pita from holding public office opens an easy way out of the present conundrum ......
Pheu Thai Leader new PM candidate. Promises not to amend 112 laws, willing to include Anutin's party in a coalition, subsequently receives the 250 senate votes to become the new PM.
I really hope it does not come to this, it would constitute a real tragedy and missed opportunity for Thailand to move forward and embrace the 21st century.

Investigation by the EC of Pita allegedly holding 42000 shares in a Media Company sets off alarm bells.
The exact same scenario played out after the last election with the leader of progressive 'Future forward' party disqualified from holding office and the party dissolved. Problem solved.
I have my fingers crossed we don't have to witness a repeat of this tragedy based on trumped up charges.

I couldn't agree more and let me remind the "vitriolic people" or heartless morons in my book that comments such as:
'Throw her in jail and throw away the key'
'lock her up'
'send her to the monkeyhouse'
'send her back to Bachmud' (Bakhmut)
'absolute scum'
........ seem to be way over the top considering the gravity of the crime committed in this case.

I'm sure there are quite a few people who live in more than one country like myself.
Thoroughly enjoy Thailand for some months every year, particularly food, the climate apart from the hottest months leading up to the monsoon season, scuba diving, body surfing and every now and then the night-life. After reading Aseannow for 6 months, it's time to return to Australia in order to keep my sanity and see my daughter and friends - even enjoy the over-the-top reglemented traffic of the safety obsessed Nanny State and dull lifestyle with even major regional centres resembling a ghost town too hours after sunset. But I run out of patience after a few months, the travelbug kicks in -
time to see my sister and family as well as my old friends from school times 50+ years ago in Switzerland.

3 observations
a) This system is a 'regulation' imposed by local Authorities and therefore not a Thai Law.
b) No information has come forward at all as to which offences attract a yellow card - nor when these regulations come into effect.
c) 'Punishment should fit the crime' comes to mind. If indeed not wearing a helmet leads to a yellow card being issued - akin you being blacklisted - the above adage obviously does not apply

Not at all, only people in Thailand and places where they are pretty much useless. You pretty much lost my interest when you said the roads are good in Thailand. You just don't know what you are talking about what so ever. I mean you can tool around on a few roads in Thailand just like many Asian countries but that is very limited.
Most people that have money in Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and in Thailand that have money are not idiots. They buy high in Lexus high road clearance SUV's.. They are the smart ones. You? just another guy or girl that doesn't travel and has very little knowledge.
A few buy the Land Cruiser, but idiots will be idiots..
Aha - smart people buy 'high in Lexus high clearance SUV's'.
But people buying a Porsche Cayenne or Macan, both SUV's with high clearance when selecting 'off-road' mode are idiots in your opinion.
Nothing further.

He wasn't over the limit so what was there to admit to when he did say that he'd had a couple of glasses?
I hope that you're not "too cowardly" to admit that you have no idea whether he was drunk or not.
Digging in your heels and stubbornly refusing the plain obvious regarding being 'legally drunk' or 'over the legal limit' At The Time Of The Accident.
The Blood Alcohol Test Result performed at the Hospital some 4 hours later still showed 20mg (0.02)., which is within the legal limit of 50mg (0.05). It proves that he was not 'drunk' 4 hours AFTER he caused the accident. His body eliminated another 60mg of alcohol - at an elimination rate of 15mg per hour accepted by the medical fraternity.
His blood alcohol content at the time of the accident therefore was approx. 80mg (0.08) or 60%! over the legal limit.
I hope that you're not "too cowardly" to admit that you were plain wrong.

10 hours ago, Liverpool Lou said:Why? Do you have any information confirming your assertion of his level of intoxication being over the legal limit?
Yes - simple arithmetics as already pointed out.
At the time of testing - 4 1/2 hours after the accident his BAC showed less than 20ml. Alcohol elimination per hour averages approx. 15ml per hour.
4.5 times 15ml 60 to 70 ml.
The legal limit is 50ml. Don't forget to add the 'less than 20ml'.
Hope you can comprehend this simple calculation????

As long as the results are known what does it matter if they take a couple of days? He was tested, that is what is important. He was arrested, that is what is important. He has been charged with initial offences, that is what is important.
How quickly a blood/alcohol test was done in Australia is completely irrelevant for. to quote you, f#@s sake.
As we now know - unsurprisingly I might add - he was tested 4 1/2 hours later. Enough time to eliminate 0.06 alcohol from his body. If he was twice over the limit at the time of the accident, he BAC would be well below the legal limit by the time the test was taken. That's what is important.
He was not arrested and apparently left the scene in a taxi. That's what is important.
Since testing of BAC via a blood sample is a standardized process across the globe, the time it took to establish the result in one country should not differ by days in another.
As a matter of fact, the result now should be available 'this morning' and not in 3 to 7 days according to the RTP.

Please give me just 1 halfway reasonable explanation, why something as straightforward as a blood-alcohol test takes 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 days for results to be known.
I underwent the very same test in Australia at 3am with the results coming back at 5:30am the same day.
For f#@s sake get real just once for a change and take your rose-coloured glasses off.
