  1. the house has come up real nice! how's the budget coming up MrBo?

Cheers Naam. Been a bit lazy lately and haven't been putting the bills and labour into the spreadsheet. I'll get around to it when we get back to Saudi.

i wouldn't worry too much. your Mrs has (obviously with your guidance) done a bloody good job as far as i can see.

p.s. i do like your "floating" bed!

He won't like it after the monk comes and tells them there is no way they can sleep with their heads in that direction...

  2. First off, this is the sort of thing you really want to take care of quickly, not ask for help on the interwebs.

    Speed is of the essence.

Explosions generally do not happen, not in the big bang and bits of car going everywhere way. There might be a bit of a chance of a pop if the tank was practically empty (full of vapour only) but not a full tank.

The fire though will quickly intensify when it his the tanks. LPG tanks have pressure valves and when it gets to that it will just jet burning gas.

If the tanks wasn't secured properly or has come loose in a crash it might go for a ride.

  3. Did you choose a good outdoor tile?

As in one that is not going to be slick as Ice when it's wet?

Yeah necron, I chose them and they are proper outside tiles which don't get (too) slippy whe wet. Part of the reason this is all taking so long is due to having to wait for me to pick and choose finishings. I won't let anyone make a decision on tiles, colours and other design stuff. If it needs to wait till my next visit, so be it.

My mate let his wife finish off the tiling on his house. She did the whole of outside including the carport which has a 15 degree slope in kitchen tiles. I fell over 3 times when i was there, god knows how many times he has.

  4. I'm quite impressed with these bamboo ladders. Light and sturdy, they appear to be.

I think they are great if your family traveled in a circus and the family name is usually preceded by "The Flying.."

Or if you were lost in the jungle as a small child and were adopted by a family of grey monkeys.

  5. Some more obscure traditions, including explanations:

    Ladders

People don’t walk underneath them. Some sources say this is because a ladder was traditionally propped up against the gallows; others, that a ladder against a wall was a triangle and therefore the sign of the Holy Trinity.

    Not Thai though...

Easy to get too complicated with this one. People on ladders tend to drop sharp or heavy stuff. Safer (better luck) just to go around.

  6. Possible motives for the cocky South American's stance?

Talk about holding a grudge but some very good points made.

BRITAIN has withdrawn a threat to enter Ecuador's embassy in London to arrest WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, President Rafael Correa says.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said he believed his country had overcome a diplomatic spat with Britain over its threat to enter the Ecuadoran Embassy in London in order to arrest WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

"We believe that this unfortunate incident is over," said Correa."It was a mistake for the British Foreign Office to say that they would enter our embassy."

"It's good that the United Kingdom has given up its threat.

"Now we act as if we never received it. We must seek a mutually acceptable solution of the case of Julian Assange through dialogue."

The president added that he was glad the two countries "were returning to the path of dialogue and were looking for a consensual solution without abandoning our principles."

The 34-member Organisation of American States declared "solidarity and support" for Ecuador on Friday, rejecting "any attempt that might put at risk the inviolability of the premises of diplomatic missions".

In an earlier interview with the British newspaper The Sunday Times, Correa said that the sex crime allegations against the WikiLeaks founder were "not a crime in Latin America" and had played no part in Quito's decision to grant Assange asylum.

He also blasted the British government for its "contradictions" in wanting to extradite Assange to Sweden, when it did not extradite former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet after his 1998 arrest in London on an international arrest warrant issued by Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon, who is now heading Assange's legal team.

So now they are friends with britain again and "Correa said that the sex crime allegations against the WikiLeaks founder were "not a crime in Latin America" and had played no part in Quito's decision to grant Assange asylum." So now why are the reasons they are affording him assylum ?

The same reason that he gave in his application and the reason publically given by Ecuador which had nothing to do with the sexual allegations.

Ecuador says that Assange is at risk of an unfair trial or the death. The U.S.A. has denied there is any "witchhunt" and stated that Assange was making "wild" claims to deflect attention from his alleged sexual misconduct in Sweden

And reports today is that he will apply to the international court. I can't see how the international court will uphold his request on an assumption? I have had no problem with wikileaks holding governments to account but assange is a egotist who is just trying to avoid facing the aligations against him.

But the allegations are pretty lame, as evidenced by the first Swedish prosecutor who refused to act.

And Britain extraditing over an alleged "offence" that would not be a crime in virtually any country but Sweden is also strange.

  7. I think an urban legend a few years back is the source of the mobile phone thing- people believe that mobile phones may attract lightning and explode or something like that- not specifically Thai or traditional, but very poor science. I'm with your wife about the thunderstorm and power sources- just one little hit and there goes the computer. Don't know what the mirrors are about!

She can't or wont explain it. My best guess is perhaps the lightning will come through the closed windows, make a bank shot off the mirror and nail the mobiles under the bed. Perhaps they had a bad experience with ball lightning in the past.

  8. Spirit Houses:

They have to keep the spirits happy, or else all hell will break loose.

Sent from my iPhone 4S using Thaivisa Connect App

Glad you mentioned spirit houses. A broken spirit house is supposed to be very bad, and apparently you're not allowed to throw them out or burn them.

whats with all the spirit house graveyards you find on backroads?

Big piles of broken spirit houses in the middle of no where.

  10. Ok, here's another.

    Next to my BiLs place in Mahachai there is a large empty lot. It's all overgrown and a bit of a dump site but;

Right in the middle there is a large red umbrella, beach umbrella size, mounted on a 7ft pole.

Under the umbrella are sets of what look like the white outfits women wear in the temples.

It looks a funny place for a clothesline. Anyone know what it is?

  11. ^

"Hey, Somchai, I heard that rich farang put a big electric fence around his fishpond."

"Really? That's great Somyot, bring the cutters with the plastic grips. Oh, don't forget the jumper cables, we'll use the fence to zap all the fish at once .We should get a few baht for all that wire once we strip it too!"

    Loon.

  12. There is a little girl in my village who has her head shaved with only a topknot or ponytail thing growing out of the crown of her head.

i was told that when she was born the monks said she was cursed and needs to maintain this hairstyle until she is 13 or something.

If she cuts the ponytail it is believed she will get sick and die.

Does anyone know the background or any more information on this tradition?

Any more odd things you have seen?
