This is in a thread on the banking forum, but I will repost here as it forms part of my Thai adventure.
One of the must do's of living in LOS is having a bank account. You can do without for a while on a tourist visa but for long term visas it's a requirement. There are lots of different requirements to open a bank account, even differing between branches of the same bank. In my case is was fairly simple and actually easier to do than back home.
Off we go to Kasikorn where all they asked for was my passport.
As I am on a tourist visa at present, they required the missus to sign a referee statement afirming my ID and address.
Sign about 10 forms and pport copies and job done.
Here is what they gave me, no choice, it's all that was on offer.....
Seriously, how can I buy booze, guns an ammo and other manly shit with that card?
She said if I wanted to wait until next month it would be Ben 10 or some other crap...

Well, much to my regret I just opened an account at Kasikorn.
On a tourist visa.
They said if no WP they require a Thai national referee to sign that you are who you say you are and verify address.
All I had to show was my passport.
Here's what they gave me........
I shit you not, I had no say in the matter, that's what they had.
Kasikorn is apparently hiring 12 year old girls to fill it's marketing slots.....
Edit: Apart from the plethora of forms that need signing this was considerably easier than opening an account in Australia as a resident national where a passport alone is not enough ID.

anyone ever had their gardens scaped with a pond or waterfall feature?
They use this kind of foam most of the time for those applications.....
anyone?
Yes I have, and no they don't. They use concrete.
do you have any fish in that scape?
Cements tend to leach all kind of chemicals into the water would not be advisable for your fish?
There are some cements that are fish safe but are they available here? or did they treat the cement with something after?
there are threads about this in the building forum.
One mentioned soaking banana tree trunks in the pond for a few weeks prior to adding the fish.

If you have a Thai Passport you are already "a legal Thai Citizen with all the rights associated".
.
Patrick
I would suggest that being able to reside in your own country should you choose or to or the need arise without prosecution or penalty would be one of those right associated.....

Well done Autan, though I think the beach in front of the Centara is gross and full of broken glass.
This adoption, they adopted you in Thailand right? At the Amphur or somesuch?
-
You are obligated to take part in the draft lottery.
Don't come to Thailand until after you are 30.
What do you mean with obligated? Do i have to come down to thailand?
Yes, if you want to be a legal Thai citizen with all the rights associated you should come to Thailand and take part in the draft lottery or pay your way out of it.
Not a bad idea if you only have a Thai passport.

There are already solutions to this available and in growing use.
Sites are more often letting you join or log in with your gmail or facebook credentials. These methods don't have a turing test when used.
You actually give your gmail or facebook username and password to those sites?
The log in is performed in a window served by the credential holder.
The site does not get to see or capture your password, they only get a confirmation of a successful log in.
Although, if anyone really wanted my facebook login they're welcome to it.

So you want to play dress ups with your special friends at home?
Google is hard.
Try googling traditional thai mens clothing and you will get a wealth of shopping links to the stuff you are looking for.

Pass the salt please.

I said, pass the goddamn salt...now...
We are in Thailand. It should be more like: pass the nam plaa.
That's probably what the Cousin said.
When I'm at the table with a loaded Uzi it would behoove you well to pass me anything I freakin ask for Sir.
And be damned quick about it.

I think you're best off ditching the armchair idea.
It's asking alot from a cheap trailbike in that size.

i think the structure itself will make it possible to shake hands through he window. i am shocked,i thought with it being such a small patch of land it would not be used for something like thisA permanent structure must be built at least one metre away from the land boundary.
Sorry, doesn't help you, but, that is the law. I believe that a wall does not come under the classification of a permanent structure.
Be glad it's not a pig farm or tannery.
A one meter building setback is pretty common worldwide, even in a nanny state you would have a hard time protecting your view.
Being such a small piece of land with such a nice view you should have bought or leased it.
-
Well, you at least ended this with an almost correctly spelled useful suggestion.
Thanks, I think I will.

Overall, the Carnegie Mellon team estimates that we spend a cumulative 150,000 hours at the gates of these irritating obstructions every single day. In a newer variant, called reCaptcha, at least that time is put to public use. You see a muddied-looking word that comes from a wonky scanned Google book; when you type what it really says, you’re actually helping out with the process of cleaning up and recognizing an actual text.
Nevertheless, we the law abiders are still wasting 17 person-years every single day. That’s a disgraceful waste of our lives. Surely there are better solutions worth exploring.
Maybe we should invent a voluntary Internet identity card so we’re already known when we sign up for something. Maybe Web sites should enforce a short-term limit of one new account or posted comment per “person.” Or the Web site should look at the speed or irregularity of our typing to determine if we’re human.
Or fingerprints. Or retinal scans. Something.
Spammer bots are a problem, yes. But Captchas are a problem, too. They’re a bother, they’re not foolproof and they assume that everyone is guilty until proven innocent. What Captcha really stands for, in other words, is Computers Annoying People with Time-Wasting Challenges That Howl for Alternatives.

What you don't see in US, or at least I have never heard if it, is dudes driving trucks or large passenger vans and buses crashing, killing people and taking off. More importantly, victims are typically compensated when injured, and compensated particularly well if injured by a commercial vehicle.
Fatality Tracker: Semi-trailer truck driver kills bicyclist in Fuller Park, flees
Headlines from Chicago newspaper (Aug 7 2012) - 3 seconds search (if that) on Google. Time to get your head out of the sand.
Thai Bashers are very tunnel visioned.
A few weeks ago there were 3 fatal hit and runs in Sydney Aust in a 7 day period.
-
Curious as to why bystanders don't hold the drivers until "Police" arrive? Happens too often.
I can't make excuses for people fleeing the scene of an accident, but I have witnessed a few accidents and I have seen drivers beaten very badly by those around. They don't always just beat the guilty party either.
It seems that here in Thailand, fleeing the scene is the norm. At least if it is a serious accident.
Quite right. Also, provided you do actually report to police, fleeing the scene of an accident if you feel danger to your person is acceptable in law in most countries I believe.

If the girls family accept compensation he could do a few year and then get deported with a guilty plea.
Now that she has been declared dead her family will be getting a bucketload of compensation if the form of all of the property, no?
Dokset probably doesnt have two satang in his name.

We were on a trip through Uthai Tani yesterday and a midmorning snack on some roast Ngoo Nah from a roadside stall perked her right up.
For those wonderingI think it tastes just like Ngoo Bahn.

Today I went to book the Hilux CNG model only to find out it doesn't have
ABS. I just assumed this was standard and I was disappointed and hesitant to make the booking. I have only been Chiang Rai under a month but it was raining almost everyday. I feel ABS is a must on the slippery road. Any comments?
the current Hilux platform in Thailand has almost no safety features.
I looked at these trucks as a last ditch effort to move some old stock/parts before they retool for the new model.

Its about layered defense/deterrent.
Fence, lights,dogs, pump shotty.
Keep it on a high shelf with no round chambered, safety on and a six year old will have no issues.
Even better, keep it in a custom built hidden compartment.
