  1. But NOT in Thailand!! A disgraceful result considering Thailand's Human Rights record! I wonder how many brown envelopes had to be distributed.
  2. Thanks for replying and it was what I thought. Post covid many of the bars, restaurants and hotels remained closed and stopped trading. Siem Reap city underwent major infrastructure changes, including Pub Street and the surrounding entertainment areas. Out went the sleezy bars with their ghetto blasting music and in came new and refurbished bars/restaurants offering ambiance for all visitors.
  3. With respect, when did you last visit this "joint" - pre or post covid?
  4. For reference: Make no mistake about it. Smoking marijuana is illegal in Cambodia. If you do it publicly, you're liable to get stopped by police, and probably be charged a hefty fine. March 2024 A police crackdown resulted in 400 fresh marijuana plants being discovered on a remote cashew plantation. Yes, cannabis may be available on the streets but not every street corner these days. There is a very proactive anti-drugs campaign at the moment ordered by the new PM Hun Manet. "Prime Minister Hun Manet commended the proactive efforts of law enforcement, relevant institutions and authorities in the ongoing fight against drug-related crimes, citing notable achievements. He made these remarks while presiding over the launch of the ninth campaign against drug crimes, spanning from January 1 to December 31, which officially began on January 11. 5. So what happens when this plane is due a scheduled maintenance? Flights cancelled? Kan Air, with its hub in Chiang Mai, comes to mind.
  6. Please note, this will enable the completion of HST Phase 1 between Bangkok and Korat. The onward HST extension to Nong Khai and Vientianne is still "light years" away.
  7. Thailand joining the Human Rights Council - you must be joking! The best laugh for me today. "We will remember them" (source Google) 1976 The 6th October Event - massacre of leftist Thai students by police and right wing paramilitaries at Thammasat University in Bangkok. 2004 - The Tak Bai Massacre - muslim "activists" (currently in the news again) 2010 - the massacre of red shirt protesters and innocent civilian bystanders by the police and military (men in black), authorised by the Yellow Shirt Government of PM Abhisit Vejjajiva The victims of 112
  8. IMO a long time coming! Typical Thailand, always reactive to disasters rather than proactive to try and prevent them.
  9. No need in my case. I have never been able to get travel insurance since being registered as an insulin dependent type 2 diabetic. This also includes medical insurance. Car, home and accident insurances no problem.
  10. The latest from Cambodia this morning (9 October 2024). Appers to be no suspicious circumstances. Friends of missing South African teacher Angelique Tong have confirmed that she has died in what has been described as a ‘swimming pool related incident’. https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501571146/update-missing-south-african-woman-found-dead-after-swimming-pool-related-incident/
  11. I just completed this quiz. My Score 40/100 My Time 205 seconds
  12. I am sure all the flood victims appreciated a "trunk call"! Well done Monk and your elephants.
  13. RIP young lad. You will no longer be persecuted by the Royal Thai Police.
  14. Maybe so in Thailand, but here in Siem Reap all the bills (notes) I use are clean ones from my bank's ATM's.
  15. Thanks for your observations and this was a suggestion I made on AN at the time. From my experience as a now retired forensic scientist, the thick black smoke and fumes pouring from the inferno inside the bus suggest flammable seats, coverings and panels etc. If this was the case, the victims would have tragically died from the inhalation of toxic fumes such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, products of burning polyurethane foam.
  16. Debit card occasionally, otherwise CASH. For me, none of this app payment stupidity. My choice - no further comment from me.
  17. RIP motorcycle man "Dust to dust, ashes to ashes" (Book of Genesis in The Bible)
  18. Too much sh.t stirring in the political lobbies?
  19. Why does it take so long to receive mail from Australia?
  20. I agree especially when it comes to 112!!
  21. Not just Thailand, UK ex-pat pensions are also frozen in neighbouring Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. When I lived in Thailand at the age of 65 I started on 102 GBP per week. 15 years later at 80, I still get 102GBP per week. Fortunately I get 2 additional UK index linked Government and Local Government pensions. 22. No doubt many AN bar stool accident investigators will disagree with me, but as a retired forensic scientist I believe these seats could have contributed to the rapid and deadly spread of the fire inside the old bus. Were fire resistant covers and foam used in the construction of the old seats? I bet not. Cheap non fire resistant materials produce deadly toxic fumes/smoke which may have sadly and tragically killed so many young children and teachers. RIP and sincere condolences to the victims and their families. So very sad on a day that should have been a happy excursion.
