  1. Deet or Picaridin are really the only ingredients in mosquito repellant which are proven to be effective for most people. You'll always get people coming out with stuff like garlic or lavender oil or skin so soft or eucalyptus or some other concoctions. Whilst that may work for them it certainly won't if as you say you are a mosquito magnet. A spray with Deet is essential for areas of skin which are not covered. Hydrocortisone cream and antihistamine tablets to treat the swelling, itching. Best advice, certainly for the evenings is "cover up"

Council tax, electricity, water, rent (or house purchase price), car tax, car repairs, house repairs, heating bills ....... all cheaper in Thailand.

Assuming you're an adult and not living with mom.

If the UK is that cheap,

Find me a fairly new 3 bedroom house in the UK, nice area, for less than 40,000 pounds or 300 pounds a month?

Link to estate agent advert will do.

Add to that internal travel, hotel prices, the availability and low cost of medicines etc. Whilst I agree places like Lidl are ensuring competition, the well known phrase "rip off Britain" is an apt one.

Are you saying that ALL Thai beaches have dangerously high bacterial water levels or just those situated in the Gulf?

Pattaya beach is obviously a pile of crap. Other beaches are "in the opinion of the poster". Suggest for questions like this you see for yourself, or seek a more professional opinion.

  4. I'm married to a Thai and when I retire the plan is to move to Bueng Kan province. However just now I still commute to the UK to work, and having lived in and visited many different Thai locations I agree that Jomtien has the right mix which suits my current situation. A little bit of "this" and not too much of "that" is perfect. The politics etc apply wherever in Thailand you choose to live.

The buccaneering brexiters must be very proud of themselves they have reduced the GREAT British pound

    To micky mouse money

The British pound certainly isn't "great" Its been in decline at least since 1917. A little blip like Brexit will only temporarily halt or hasten the slide. This has also been discussed on the "39 baht" thread. there's plenty website evidence to back this up. Nothing "Great" about the pound or indeed Britain

It goes up and down in both the long term and the short term  ,

Oh dear, so what are you saying? It will return to 50 baht?, 55 baht?, 70 baht, better? The pound has been in long term decline for decades. Short term recoveries are mere blips in the ever downward spiral. I'll repeat what I said but hopefully this time not censored. A rubbish, worthless currency from a rubbish worthless country.

A lot will depend on Brexit ... if that goes badly then it will get worse against the Baht, Euro and US Dollar.

If Article 50 is revoked you’ll be back to 50.

<deleted>, look at the history of the pound. Its been in decline since WW1. The 4 year forecaste is 25 baht.

    A <deleted> currency from a <deleted> country.

    Oh really?

Your opinion but reality is the opposite.

The people I know who live in Jomtien spend 4 or 5 days a week in Central.

Go to the the malls, supermarkets, movies, restaurants, bars (better girls), sports bars etc.

Jomtien has little if none of this to offer.

Heck, if you want an occasional fast food McDonald's, etc. they are non existent.

Jomtien is ok for a few days I guess, but most seem to be bored with it and come over the hill for a more full and active lifestyle.

Whatever floats your boat.  I guess if a person is on the internet or TV all day it suits them fine...

An alternative reality of course is many people like to live just outside the madness but close enough to pop in as and when they want. Jomtien has many bars and restaurants, and a clean beach. Fast food (pizza, burgers etc) can be got at plenty places if that's your thing but I'm guessing a McDonalds isn't top of most peoples lists when deciding where to stay.

A huge big pain in the ass to take a songtaew there and back. Big queues of people at South Pattaya Rd intersection, so many Russians and the traffic jam to get there sometimes is very bad.

Yeah high season is the big drawback. Russians storming the baht bus as if it were the last one on the planet

Some people easily put off. At that place there are regularly upwards of a dozen Song Taews just waiting to reverse into place to take the next batch of people. It's a great, cheap service.

Not always the case with the baht bus from Jomtien to Central.

On a Friday or Saturday evening you can sit in the thing for an hour before arrival.  All the while sucking up the exhaust of buses and other vehicles.

I would choose Pratumnak and recommend the OP get a motorbike wherever he decides.

Where do you get on? The Song Taew to Pattaya comes from the far end of Jomtien beach, it'll sit there until full but anywhere else on the journey just jump on one of the many and 20 minutes later you're in central Pattaya.

    Pratumnak is a decent shout.
