"They said that the tourism situation on Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao was dire. A bridge to the main island might help with visits to the other islands."
This is hardly surprising. The counter cultural values which underpined Koh Pangan and Koh Tao have been destroyed by the obsessive law & order junta directive against the full moon parties and the people that attended them. This combined with corrupt police using the medieval drug laws to extort travellers has frightenes people away. The solitary unspoilt beauty of these island has been destroyed by the plethora of resorts and hotels especially on Samui. Koh Pangan and Koh Tao was a profitable niche market, unique to Thailand, alas, destroyed by the orthodoxy of the Junta trying to clean it up. We can see how Pattaya, another unique niche market was destroyed in an attempt to make it conform to mediocrity, same with the Kao San Road, same with Lower Sukhumvit. The military mindset is totally unsuitable to governance and has been the kiss of death for once thriving tourist areas.

Why do you think that we are uniquely incapable of managing our own affairs, a situation that is normal for a significant number of small Nations, who cope just fine.
I don't understand your point about oil agreements. What do you think will need to be changed about existing licenses and why?
The EU has already clearly signalled that Scotland would be welcome back in the fold. Despite your own unfortunate doubt about our abilities, they don't see is as either too wee or too poor.
The EU has not signalled any such welcome. Quite the opposite.

If Scotland left the UK it could take up to 14 years for the Europeans to accept them! Aye! And the wee bampots wantnto keep stirling! The scotch wont get another referendum.

The death knell of Pattaya was promoting it as a family resort; high profile raids by police and army in places such a WS; and the Thai Tourist Authority getting involved. It is noticeable that petty crime has risen since the army take over.

If you were a Thai official reading this forum and all the contributors who hate, despise, mock, criticize endlessly Thai people and Thailand.. WOULD YOU WANT US HERE? Calling Thais brainless, stupid, corrupt, violent, prostitutes, liars , cheats unfair fighters and a myriad of cheap insults that could apply equally to any country because in fact, the insults are just generalizations that the 'falang' (as some people refer to themselves,) could equally apply to their own countries. Even a report on cancer in Thailand is an excuse fot the TV 'falang' to turn on the taps of criticism hate and mockery. Perhaps people should be more circumspect about voicing anti Thai hate speech and condescending racist rhetoric. Assume your comments are being read with interest by senior officials and the comments shape their view of us. Or better still: people who are so unhappy here could leave so they wont have anything to complain about. Just a thought. God bless.

Mainly hearsay and second guessing.

every time i go to immigration i am treated like a VIP.
thai neighbors love me.
cannot be easier and nothing has changed for me in 6 years.
FOR ME if i did not read Thai visa i would completely unaware anything has changed.
You are correct about reading about problems on Thai Visa. It acts as an echo chamber and amplifies issues even when people are wrong. All the paranoia, neurosis and worry seems to come from people reading about it not actually experiencing it. We thus have the situation where new visitors to Thailand are worrying about TM30s etc without realizing its normal hotel procedure.

The TM30 is a non issue. As for insurance-change your type of visa. As for 800k- you have the money. No need to panic.

Does this mean we can forget about the TM30 and just be nice to each other?
The TM30 on issue was blown out of proportion on this forum by rumour mongers and people who did not understand their visas or their accommodation situation. It never was an issue for most people.

He talk about tourists, not expats - a small but significant difference ...
Actually they are effectively the same. We import hard currency. We frequently travel around the country We drink and eat in tourist areas sometines. We stay in hotels sometimes. We effectively renew our visa via the 90 day reporting system which makes us more like tourists.

Most of the jobs I've had over my career, if the boss could do without you for over 3 weeks in a row, they often figured they didn't need you at all... It's a US thing.
Yeah. 6 day weeks, cr@p holidays, jobs linked to medical insurance, wage slavery...Yeah an American thing. France has a thirty seven hour, five day week and plenty of holidays. Even the UK has 21 days minium plus public holidays. I have taken a whole year off more than once just to travel then just got another job. My last job gave me 75 days paid holiday. I am saddened (and a little bit amused) by the fearful, orthodoxy in which most Americans live.

Thailand is not discriminating against genuine tourists. Genuine tourists vome to thailand for mybe 2 to 3 weeks and go home. They don't use 30 day visa exempts to stay long term in the country. Please get it right before criticising!
Nonsense: travellers and tourists travel as long as they can afford to. You are talking about short term 'holiday makers'. Only a fool would travel 12 hours on a plane just to stay for a few days to fall in line with an artificially created definition of tourist. The early Victorian tourists often stayed for months in foreign countries. It was only with the advent of mass tourism in Europe that two week holidays were invented. Please get it right before commenting.

I'm not sure what CW zoo means.
I don't think the land border entries thing is relevant. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that if I was to leave Thailand right now and come back by land next week (I've only entered by land once this calendar year) they'd either not let me in or give me only a short stay. I doubt the situation would change much on January 1, but I'm not sure, perhaps their unofficial 180 day rule would reset. Either way, the number of land entries isn't my issue. Perfectly happy to take planes rather than buses if it makes any difference, but it doesn't seem to.
I think CW zoo refers to the Immigration Office in Bangkok in an area called Chang Wattana.

Im sorry to say that the filial piety you describe is a primitive, agrarian, third world, sexist phenomenon. In Thailand as in the rest of Asia it's the female who carries the burden of family honour and material support. Never the males. It is wrong and does not exist in modern societies that have justice and social equality as major goals. East is east and West is west and never the twain shall meet. Im sorry to say the fault lines in the foundation of your relationship that were covered up in Issan are revealed on return to a modern industrial parliamentary democracy and the societal norms that underpin it. Its a very sad situation and one I have been aware of for decades. Its not just Thailand but everywhere where close extended families are the norm women bare the brunt and are negatively impacted. The myth of inter family cross generation support is actually a claustrophobic web of control and emotional dependance. I have noticed this in The Arab world and even Irish, Italian and Portuguese families. Good luck with everything. You're a better man than I am Gunga Din.

My company clinic started giving warnings about the efficacy of the PSA tests as they led to too many innacurate results leading to unesseccary life changing surgery. Regarding the price: Im pretty sure most hospitals have an online price list.

Seriously, I could check these 3 sickles in my check in bag no problems. Can check in guns as easy as skis. Just show a gun is unloaded and in a gun case. Many hunters and competitors travel with long guns.
My GF did tell me cant take on plane in Thailand but I dont see why not.
If you want to get arrested go ahead. You can not take a realistic toy gun or a knife or gaffa tape or a bicycle chain on a commercial flight. As for guns: I would hope you would be arrested if one was found in your luggage. As for the scythes: I can not see any justification for having them in a city. Everyone of the items on your list are available in Thailand. In short I suggest the introduction of XRay machines is to stop people like you bringing in the types of dangerous items you refer to. I do hope they are successful. Good luck.
