  1. Yes, that is it, and either I misunderstood before or things have changed, because the mobile rate is 1.50/min - higher than most if not all mobile plans, but it is a nationwide rate - perhaps that is the attraction. And you are right, I should check the promotions. Now I pay 3 baht for first minute, then 1 with AIS, but make a lot of short calls - your package would suit me better.

    Thanks,

    Peter

Is this what you are looking for:

    http://www.tot.co.th/toten/index.php?Itemi...t&task=view

    http://www.tot.co.th/toten/index.php?optio...amp;Itemid=1195

But if this is cheaper than your mobile phone you might have the wrong plan for your mobile. I pay 0.25 for the first minute and 1.5 for more minutes with my mobile. This at True. But they have endless other "promotions" how they call it. Have no idea what other mobile phone provides have. Perhaps even better. It changes all the time.

  2. Hi Jack,

Well, my first attempt a few minutes ago was 100% successful at low bandwidth (haven't tried high but I don't imagine the sound of these old recordings is any better that way). So given the weather that is very promising - very exciting. Add to that, the first couple of selections they played is exactly what I was looking for - upbeat standards. I still like to find that Thai site, though.

    Thanks a lot!

    Peter

I listen to a great U.S. station: www.jazz24.org NO ADS, GREAT TRADITIONAL JAZZ!
  3. Hi,

Several times, in Internet cafes, the managers were listening to some really nice mainstream jazz which was being streamed, some by well known artists like Miles Davis, and quite a bit by others which were unknown to me. As I am a jazz buff, and now I have an ADSL connection again, I would really like to find that site. Actually I asked the name once, and it was definitely a Thai site, but alas have forgotten it. I've looked around on the 'net but can't find it again. I think the site may stream other kinds of music as well and it looked like it was a popular Thai portal for all kinds of things.

I've tried some other streaming sites but anything outside of Thailand just times out - that might be a temporary situation - I've only had the ADSL connection at this location for a day or two. Anyway, any ideas - guesses, alternates, whatever, about this site would be appreciated.

  4. Hi,

I have a landline again after two years of doing without. Two years ago one could use an alternate, allegedly cheaper service to call a mobile number - cheaper than the mobile carrier rates - although it was very difficult to tell for sure if it actually was, by calling 1234 then the mobile number. I would be grateful for any current info about alternate service(s).

  5. TTT has given me one of these modem/routers. While it looks like it has never been used there is no user manual included, which is kind of odd. Anyway, I found a few references to it on the Internet stating the default username and password are both admin. That doesn't work on this one. Tried resetting the router - nada - can't log in. I tried teleneting into it and the password admin does not work that way either. Blank password and 1234 also don't work.

It is not a big deal as I have my own Xyxel router, but what the heck - I'd like to get it working anyway. Maybe I'll have a use for it one day. Can anyone confirm that 'admin' should be the default username/password on these?

    Thanks,

    Peter

  6. Ford has that glow plug dashboard light also.

A friend of mine has a ragged old Jeep with a Mitsubishi turbo diesel engine. It likely has a million kilometers on it, as in worn out. It was very difficult to start. It has a glow plug heater light. The light goes out when the plugs are hot. He had to turn the key on and off out three times then it would start. When it did start there was NO white smoke nor was there white smoke while cranking.
  7. Thanks for your interest.

I can give you an update in that I changed the filter head but the problem remains, leaving the glow plugs or air leaking into the fuel line somewhere else, or I suppose perhaps both. I lean to the glow plugs being the problem even though the smoke is clearly white, not grey, and there is no obvious sign of unburned fuel like a strong odour. It may be a few days until I have the glow plugs checked but will let you know.

I concede that it could possibly be a glow plug fault. They can be tested before splashing out for new ones, but do change that filter head first.

Do come back OP & let us know what happens.

  8. Hi Chantas,

Yes, that the fuel filter is exactly the one you describe. I actually went to have the housing changed this morning but the shop did not want to do it, insisting there was nothing on/in it that would be worthwhile changing (honest shop even if they are wrong!). I found out what kind of shop they want me go to - 'raan pump' and that there are several along the south/central Sukhumvit garage strip in Pattaya, so I'll try that soon.

You must be missing LOS to be keeping up with the TV posts!

Hi there pmk yes mate i did mean the fuel filter housing, sorry.can you look at it? is it the type that has the hand primer built on top, ie has a big black type button on top that you can put your hand on and push in and out?just curios as i havent worked on the ford ranger before, and if it is this type of housing, i would change that 100% first and give that a go mate.

i would have had a look at it myself but me and my wife have just relocated back to blighty, :)

  9. Thank you, all.

    Chantas and Lancashirelad,

The filter has been changed to no effect, but not the filter housing. Chantas, is that what you are referring to as the 'head'?. Depending on the price I will try that before anything else. If that doesn't work or it is too expensive, then I am back to my original question about a shop to take it to, because my two mechanics do not want to take on tracking down the potential air leak. One referred me to a specialist shop in Rayong (I live in Sattahip), but Pattaya would be more convenient for me. I'll post further - it may be a week or two.

    Peter

Hurray, somebodies hit it at last. A lot of (no doubt well meaning) but very worrying & expensive crp spouted above. Glow plugs, cracked heads, injector valves? etc.

Its a Ford & its diesel. Change the fuel filter HOUSING before you do anything else. They are inexpensive. I'd say 90% that'll cure your problem.

  10. There were conversations here about white smoke and hard to start in the mornings because a small air leak allowed fuel level to drop overnight from the force of gravity.

Anyway, the truck does not consume water, does not run rough or run hot. The battery is strong and it cranks well. This is strictly a first-thing-in-the-morning problem which also indicates it is not water in the fuel system. After maybe 30 secs it runs great for the rest of the day.

    Thanks,

    Peter

    Hi,

My Ford pickup is showing the classic symptoms of air leaking into the fuel system, being hard to start in the morning and billows of white smoke when it does start. I've changed the fuel filter but it made no difference. I think the best way to track down the leak (or eliminate this from the list of possible causes) is to pressurize the fuel system, which I suppose takes special equipment.

Any recommendations for a mechanic or shop in Pattaya or Ban Chang that would be good for this specific problem?

    Peter

I have never heard of air in the fuel system causing white smoke. It sounds more like a head gasket, cracked head or cracked block. Have you ever run the engine hot?

  11. Hi,

I'm looking for a place reliable place to order a low end digital camera. The ones listed in the resources list here are either down, abandoned or in Thai only. I need one where the site is in English and I can communicate with them in English.

Any suggestions on currently active sites?

    Peter

  13. My daughter has a new Wellcom 819 cellphone with MP4. It had some MP4 files from Wellcom on it, and they play okay both on the phone and my computer with any of my players. However, when I try to play my own MP4 files on the phone, it errors with 'invalid format'. I've created those MP4 files from AVI or FLV files with various programs including VLC, and with VLC even tried new copies with the same codex (mp4v) and any other characteristics I could identify but to no avail. Neither can I see anything different between the files from Wellcom that do play and mine that don't.

Any ideas on how I can get the phone to play my MP4 files would be appreciated.

  14. I guess the tel company is by province - can't remember Alberta's after 19 years here! Any way of finding out that you know of?

    Thanks,

    Peter

    Call 1 800 000 150

Its Canada Direct and you get an operator who asks which Tel Company (i.e. Bell Canada) and then you just give them the number you wish to call collect. I use it for calling Canadian Banks collect.

  15. Thanks all especially Monty who comes to the rescue once again!

Can somebody tell me phonetically, or even better get the gf or wife to also write it in Thai (can we do that on this forum or attach something to a PM?) the Thai name for 'sole proprietorship'?

    Peter

  16. Hi,

I need some very basic info about the different kinds of limited companies a Thai citizen can form here, and the income tax rates that companies have to pay. The background to this is that the wife may be making some pretty good commissions in real estate - let's say up to 1 million/year for discussing purposes. Obviously we are interested paying the minimum amount of income tax possible but keeping legal.

I'm encouraging her to go to a tax advisor also, but there's the eternal problem in LOS of finding a qualified and honest professional. Any recommendations in the Pattaya area?

    Thanks,

    Peter

  17. You did a lot of things right, although they didn't help in this case, including loading BIOS defaults, but the problem is with XP, not the BIOS. The good news is your data is probably undamaged but you'll likely be facing another install of XP.

The quickest way to get working again, assuming you have an XP CD, is simply do a basic install on another hard drive. Best to disconnect this drive first lest you get some confusion with drive letters, and it's safer also. Once you have that done, connect the original drive again, set the BIOS to boot from the new one, browse over to your old C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\My Documents, copy all the data to your new My Docs folder.

Now you can at least work on the data. Run a disk check, anti virus, etc, on the original drive at your leisure.

While working on a deadline, naturally. :o

Happened after my neice was using it, I think she inadvertently changed the configuration in Windows somehow. Either that or a virus. Or both.

Using Windows XP. Whn I start it now I get, instead of the normal screen, something showing "User"as logged on (which there should not be) and beneath "user" a notation of 10 unread messages. My normal windows configuration does not do this. When I click on "User"I get "Loading your personal settings", then "logging off" then back to the same original "User"screen, ad inifinitum.

Multiple reboots have had no effect.

I have tried to start Windows in safe mode. I can get the menu for safe mode up but when I click on start in safe mode I get a scrolling screen with directory contents folded by freeze. Ditto when I try to start in safe mode command prompt or select"Start with most recent configuration.

I can call up the BIOS menu but have no idea what to do there to rectify matters. Tried loading default settings, no effect.

Needless to say the documents I need are on that computer and not backed up (my bad!)

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I've pretty well used up my repetoire short of hitting the thing with a hammer, which I am more than slightly temopted to do.....
