  1. Peter, may I ask what general area you live in? Just wondering how close these guys are to my neighborhood.

Sure can, and I will even answer. ;-). I live in Sattahip, - Plutaluang to be precise. I think I recall seeing just one of these when we lived in Soi Siam Golf Club in Pattaya - had more trouble with cobras and pit vipers there. Been here about six months and mostly come across these guys plus a cobra or two.

  2. This snake does not have venom injecting fangs, but instead introduces venom in it's victim by method of a long sustained bite (over 1 minute) allowing venom in it's saliva to enter the victim through little grooves in it's fangs...

If this is the case the symptoms can be quite severe, mainly high levels of internal bleeding of the victim...

Monty and Easternspark, Thanks a lot. Unfortunately we seem to have quite a few of these around - the dogs find them and flush them out - fortunately none of them have been bitten, or if so not long enough to do any serious damage to them. Of course I worry about them, but my main concern is the kid and other family members.

  3. I have no telephone line and need to find an alternative internet connection. Can anyone tell me if EDGE is available in Pattaya or are we stuck with GPRS?

If EDGE is available where can I get a SIM card and what is the cost etc? In Tukcom no one seemed to have heard of it. When I explained what I wanted all they wanted to do was sell me an aircard, which I already have. 1-2-call have a prepaid SIM card, but as far as I can see only supports GPRS. Whilst it is cheap, it is, I am told, painfully slow.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I use EDGE 1-2 call in Sattahip and it and it is not much different than GPRS here but if you want to try it, call 1175 after you get the new SIM card. I was advised by tech support that you always have to do that so they can send a new configuration to your phone whenever you change phones, etc. BTW, they speak perfect English and do seem to know what they are talking about, although nothing seems to have helped my own connection. You should also confirm first your phone is EDGE capable.

  4. Hi,

    I need some expert advice.

My water tank is underground. I did not see the plumbing pipes installed and of course most of them are buried in concrete.

I have a problem with the pump coming on when no water apparently is being used, but for now my question is simply about the installed plumbing.

There are two pipes on the input side of the pump. One has a what I would call a back pressure valve – a simple flap valve, and I assume is the municipal water input. The other does not have a valve. I have no idea what that pipe is for, but if it is shut, then water stops flowing into the house. Again, this is on the input side of the pump. Any ideas on the purpose of that pipe?

    Thanks,

    Peter

  5. Wise words (as usual) from GuestHouse.

    Naka.

Hi PMK i am a UK Will Writer and Estate Planner and work in the UK and Thailand.

you would be wise to take note of the comments made by Guest House.

Before i could give you any advice i have a couple of questions which would impact on the advice i would give they are:-

    1. is your neice Thai?

    2. are her parents alive?

    3. where are your wife's real estate assets?

    4. why would it be impractical for adoption? (although leaving a gift to your neice is legal without adoption, but the problem is as Guest House has already intimated, it her parents are alive)

depending on the answer to these questions the advice i would give would vary greatly. but in a nutshell you would probably be best advised to give your estates to each other so the survivior of you could look after your neice and then pass to her on second death, but depending on the answers to the above questions this part of the will is the tricky thing.

    Thank you all:

    1) Yes, Thai.

    2) Yes, and not married.

    3) Thailand

    4) Long story - mostly because it is so difficult with a farang adopting father with virtually no income.

    Peter

  6. Hi,

We are raising a six year old niece as our daugther. Adoption would not be practical at this time The wife has a number of real estate assets and we want to be sure that the bulk of them go to her in the event of my wife's early death. There is no Thai we can trust as executor or to manage the estate although there is a farang that visits here regularly that I do trust.

    Any suggestions?

    Peter

  7. Microsoft is making Office 2007 its default productivity suite for system builders, less than five months after the suite's full-scale launch.

Say Goodbye to Office 2003: Microsoft will stop supplying OEM Microsoft Office 2003 from June 30, Microsoft exec Eric Ligman wrote yesterday on the company's blog for small businesses.

The declaration means that Microsoft partners without inventory of Office 2003 must ship Office 2007 from July onwards.

Microsoft is making a heavy push for Office 2007 and seems to be now using OEM partners in the vanguard for driving sales.

Previous editions of Office have sold relatively slowly during the last 10 years, with a sizeable percentage of the customer base clinging to increasingly out-dated editions. That's a problem for Microsoft, as it means a key product in its core business isn't growing as it should.

Office 2007 is relatively early in the Microsoft lifecycle, having officially launched in January following limited availability in November, while Office 2003 was launched in October 2003. The older product still enjoys mainstream product support from Microsoft and partners, while also being well within its extended lifecycle support.

  8. Hi,

That site (and others) tell me I need 6,000 BTU per hour. Do you know what that translates to in terms of how big a unit I need?

    Thanks,

    Peter

Hi Peter, I previously got some good advice here on the forum before I bought my a/c units. Firstly, you check sizes on this website http://www.fpl.com/residential/savings/ene...al/roomac.shtml It's a good way to double check what you think sizes should be. Other than this, you can just ask a local company to do this for you.

Carrier are expensive. Daiking & Mitsubishi are probably the best. Although I wouldn't worry too much about the brand name, as long as it is a recognisable one. Central Air, or 'Focus' for example are alot cheaper and for most they use the same internal components as other 'bigger' brand names. A good indication is if the outdoor unit uses a mitsubishi compressor - this is a good sign.

Try not to oversize the unit too much, the energy efficiency will be compromised and you may be either too hot or too cold - nowhere in between.

  9. Hi,

I hear a lot of different opinions on aircon quality and size. The dealers all say that bigger is better (lower electric bill), but it seems like a lot knowledgeable farangs feel that closer to working all the time the aircon unit is, the more efficient it is and the lower the costs will be.

I am looking at 18,000 BTU but wonder if I can get away with less, and specifically at a Carrier unit at HomePro for 34,900 but there too, I am not happy about spending that much on one aircon.

So what is your recommendation as to the best value for an upstairs room, under a marginally insulated but shaded roof, 4.5 X 5 M in size, brand and if they have a branch in the Pattaya area, retail outlet?

    Thanks,

    Peter

  10. Hi,

I'm about to rent out a house.

Can someone advise me of the typical price split between furniture and the house itself, what the different tax rates are, and if it really matters what furniture is included as long as the tenant signs off on it, i.e., what are the chances of an actual audit or inspection?

Also, someone previously recommended book stores for blank leases, but I could not find any there, nor in Office Depot except a very generic lease not appropriate for real estate. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Peter

  11. I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite that came with Vista Basic. If it has the Vista sticker on it and you buy from a reputable shop, I think you can rest easy about the legitimacy of the Vista software. If you want to be absolutely sure, make them do a clean install from the supplied DVD and in front of you. It is all automated - just takes a fair amount of time. Then go online and see if it downloads updates okay.

I am not a Vista fan (to put it mildly) but can't locate W2K or XP drivers for the wireless adapter and some other things - I doubt there are any, so I am stuck with it. It does run everything I used on XP though, and it seems like suppliers are very quick to release drivers - printer drivers, for example, for Vista.

    Peter

I'm currently on Windows XP Professional (fake I think, installed by IT City when I had it fixed there, and I can't find our company's original CD bought by previous manager).

I'm thinking of buying a new laptop (Toshiba) which supposedly comes with free gEnuine Windows Vista Home Basic.
