  1. Glad to see the positive comments here about retirement in Thailand in relation to some unhappy people. My wife is Thai and we are in the USA. We plan to move there in a couple of years to retire. We always have the option of traveling outside of the country to visit other places.

Wife already has land we can start there with a small place. Cheers.

The rules are very clear and provided by the Thai Embassy (at least the german one):

With a TV you need a return- or onward ticket.

Quite likely you'll be refused at the airline's checkin counter and if not there, you could be denied at immigration in Bangkok.

Even though there afaik no reports of people beeing denied at immigration, no one can guarantee you won't sit in the next plane to where you came from if the IO has a bad day or whatever.

If it happens, I already can see a 50-pages topic here on TVF about the xenophobic IOs refusing a hated westerner to enter paradise. So why take the risk?

What if you are moving to Thailand with your Thai spouse to retire on a marriage visa? I thought you get the marriage visa once you are in Thailand?

Nevermind, I see you get the marriage visa in home country.

What is "a bit insignificant number of people"?    Just trying to figure out if that's a lot or not a lot.

Nevertheless, my story: I felt pretty stuck in LOS, where with an employed wife, one child, and myself over 60 and doing part-time teaching plus a small pension, I had enough, but not enough to buy my cashews or pizza every month, for example. Eventually a friend offered me a job remodeling his home back in the US, and it included room and board for the course of the job.  I was then able to save enough to bring the family over to the US, where I am again feeling stuck!  ????????  Now I'm just scraping by but would be doing fairly well if the wife would pitch in instead of sending her money back home and saving up for her future.

Your wife would qualify for Social Security off of your earnings after so many years in USA or other arrangement, such as married for so long. That would provide extra. She's only get 50% of what you get and that would be at her full retirement age, even still, it's extra money.

I've been here 35 years, and still can't find anything to moan about!!!!

That's encouraging to can't find a thing to moan about in Thailand after 35 years. My Thai wife and I have Thailand looming to move to, she's been here 5 years in USA. Seems okay, if we want a change of scenery, travel a bit.
