Cancelling the test and go program will not only destroy my plan to get back to the family after 2 years away due to covid, but totally destroy thai tourism for  2022 and beyond. It's an absolutely nuts idea. If Thailand is willing to cancel the test and go after a month, it means thailand will never be open as it will be closing every 3-4 months when variants raise their heads.

He would be better addressing and publishing who and where these cases are coming from. Is it all migrant workers ? Is is all arrivals from say India with bogus certificates ? Is it us Brits catching it between testing and flying ? Is is a country known for bogus travel info ?

Precisely. Travelers are going to be totally gunshy about going to Thailand. Make all those plans and risk having them dashed away. It's going to be awhile before confidence is restored.

The wife had written off 2022 a couple of months ago to go back and visit friends and family. We'll wait until. Hopefully.

  2. Thai wife and I are living the the States. Good and bad about anywhere. We have a plan to move to Thailand in the coming years, much to appreciate there and much to miss about where we live now. Just be happy at home and a little travel sprinkled in and some friends.

My wife loves the snow, I dislike the cold and wet when it's not snowing. But we have the mountains, the ocean not far away, the desert over the Cascade mountain range. Plenty of places for solitude and camping. We live in the city, but its quiet.

I miss going to a restaurant in Thailand and eating outside having breakfast. And the weather.

  3. I guess the only change for me is that I'm more of a hermit and avoid people - aside from wife. Some people are suffering, but that can be alleviated by adapting to the environment.

We all have computers. Phones, perhaps with cameras. There's a lot we can do. There's no end to the activities one has at their disposal. Exercise is always available - physical and mental.

Time compresses for some people, because they do the same routine day after day. They stop growing and learning. There's much we can do to keep learning and challenging ourselves. Cheers!

  4. We had a friend and his wife return to their future home in Thailand. Udon Thani, if that matters. The house was completely picked clean. They came to find out her daughter and boyfriend were druggies and, of course, didn't work. And they needed money for drugs, of course.

I heard about it through my wife through his wife.

This guy used to talk about Thailand all of the time. He'd lived there for a few years after the 2008 crash. After that incident three years ago, he hasn't mentioned Thailand once. Now they have their own home here and I get the impression they may not move to Thailand in the future.

  5. I'm late here, but...Sorry to hear about what happened. Certainly, crime is always present, anywhere, and is very likely to increase when people need money. We live in the States and crime is clearly increasing - a lot due to drugs and there's been an increase in people who can't or won't improve their situations.

Years ago, my wife and I were driving around Chaiyaphum. I noted to her that I like a certain "peaceful" part of it. She said that area was full of druggies and crime. In the States, anywhere, a place can be peaceful, so I'm more wary in the countryside. Local riff-raff taking what they want when you are camping and whatnot. I feel safer in the city. We both feel safer in the city and she feels safe here where we live in a Seattle suburb.

My wife's tune has changed over this year. We, I, thought we'd have a piece of land in the countryside, but now she wants to live in a development with guards/security. We both agree it would be prudent for us to take a conservative approach - the security and being near medical facilities. I'm cool with that.

It's just good to have a lot of caution when out and about. Prudent caution and precautions, not to be confused with being paranoid and jumpy at everything.

There's plenty of crime in Thailand, like anywhere. Petty and otherwise.

  6. Changed careers quite a bit. Military, customs brokerage, accounting, working at an online start-up, worked banking, manufacturing business, etc. Data analyst, business analyst, project manager, technical writer, reporting analyst, web development...a jack of all trades, a master of none - to a degree.

The work was fun. I really enjoyed 90% of it. However, I got tired of management, some coworkers, the office politics, layoffs, and other unpleasantries and quit working in my early 50s. I thought I'd be in Thailand now, but Thai wife wants to keep working and then this virus mess hit, among other things. Which is fine, life is good here in the USA. One day we'll make it back to Thailand, probably in the next four years.

The new unpaid career is gardening, reading, writing, local travel, camping, listening to podcasts, music and audiobooks. Learning to draw, paint, sketch in my notebooks and on the laptop. Some gaming and learning to fly with a flight simulator, home repair, playing with the cats. Never a dull moment.

    You mentioned hunger.

In PRC Starvation and hunger death in MASSES happened not that long ago, around Year 1960.

Then came total disarray in PRC around Year 1970.

By mid /late 1980 PRC was dirt, dirt poor.

And now Life is what they are 40 years later in PRC.   This had been all history.

All unreal, fluke, impossible to you ?

So much news about PRC in media.    Whatever avoided to report, lightly reported,  briefly reported, or delay reported about PRC  in WESTERN world media and/or most English-language media,  PRC would be pleased as those things or items are achievement.

While Western world media and/or most English-language media are very much focused on PRC wrongdoings,  potential issue, long term trouble...............

If the spotlight is on the problem, and the problem is big enough, the problem will go away. The government will do whatever it takes.

I wonder if the Gov't will step in with a bailout - as has been done repeatedly in 'Western' countries.

Using the public purse to redeem rich people - who got rich by doing this over and over.

    Too big to fail.

If it does fail, it will be sudden. Until then, we won't know. Black Swan event.

The government won't have any choice but to bail it out, though.

One thing the tourism department together with other radical changes through out the country appear to forget is some features are in fact what draw tourists to come to Thailand, for example riding in a tuk-tuk, sitting in a long-tail boat on one of the canals, eating authentic Thai food, seeing wild monkeys in Lopburi etc. The problem with the modern world is every city is becoming the same which is sad for me and I suppose many others who want to experience the different cultures as part and parcel of their holidays, which is why the major cities like Bangkok are for business only not tourism if someone really want to see and experience Thailand they need to get as far away from Bangkok as possible IMO.

Yes, the world is becoming homogenized. Uniqueness is falling by the wayside.
