  1. Yes thank you for the replies, I have one problem the licenses run out mid June and I have to fly out mid May was hoping that I could affect a renewal more than a month in front.

I will have to check the renewal periods before and after expiry, unless anyone out there knows.

This year the plan is to build a new house in Nong Ki Issan, the land is ex rice field and has had the ground raised some 2 mtrs and this has been down settling for 2 years. I do have plans for the house but what I really need is some advice from anyone local who has done this and could recommend a building firm or a reliable builder that they have personally used or indeed one that they know of who has built houses for falang or Thai that I could talk to and possibly see their work.

I have high lighted an area of concern, to me.

The building pad has been raised 2 meters. This pad has been settling for 2 years..... when constructed was the pad compacted? There is a definite difference between settlement and compaction. Depending on the soil type settlement might achieve anywhere from 50 - 100% compaction. If soil from the surrounding paddy was used you will be in the lower percentile (50%) due to the high percentages of silts and clays. If the material is a pure sand or a gravel of a single size you could see compaction values approach 100%.

I have seen engineered fills designed for as little as 85% (Highly expansive clays) used for builing pads but typically the requirements are anywhere from 90-95% for compaction requiments on a housing building pad.

Failure to have a compacted pad might cause structural distress in a completed structure. There might be future issues with your underground plumbing. Please note that I use the term might, because there might be no problems, but you are rolling the dice it's your gamble.

If rebuilding the pad is a problem, the only solution I can think of would be to reduce the loads exerted on the pad. This can be accomplished by going with a mat foundation (No foundations) which eliminates column foundation BUT will be very expensive (Much more concrete and Alot more rebar). If that's to pricey of an option, you can enlarge the column and wall foundations (wider & deeper).Or you can roll the dice.

Soil will settle over time but generally will only compact with mechanical effort provided by man.

Thanks for your info, I imagine the pad was built in the usual Thai.way, A large Bon was dug 3 meters deep and the sub soil a mix of sand and clay was used and I imagine the only compacting was from the lorrys and the machines leveling it.

Is there any simple way of testing the % of compaction ?

  4. From my experience if it is really farmland outside of the mooban you might not be allowed to build a house but you could build a hut.

My in-laws have a nice peace of land and we were not allowed to build a bungalow on that land as it is registered as farmland.

Yes Thanks, I believe it depends on the title paper there are several leading up to chanote, do you know what land title your in-laws hold?

  6. Phuket Town is always a traffic nightmare. The language my daughter has picked up from me just being driven to and from would make a longshoreman cringe.

The never-ending protests in front of Sala Klang worsen the situation; even after they 'win' they are still out there blocking the streets.

Who are these people? Don't they have jobs to do? Why are they always in my way? I just want to go from Point A to Point B with minimal hassle.

I can't wait to move to Songkhla...

    mostly unemployed people..

Ah!! but somebody is paying them rolleyes.gif

  7. Let me tell you a story.

At the November Festival (chicken eating) local name, two falang were drunk, two Thai boys where there one with his young girlfriend, one of the falang started messing with the girlfriend, forcing his attentions on her, her boyfriend defended her telling the falang to (F.. off) the falang responded by trying to kick the boy chasing him away.

Later, nextday? the boys, (now more than two) saw the falang riding his motor bike and attacked him. They are in jail awaiting trail in Nang Rong.

    Story from anywhere really.

    However, what is the point?

    Ganging up?

When I was in the navy, and we came to a smaller places/ports, many of the local gals where kind of excited to see all these uniformed guys suddenly appear.

Needless to say, but many of the navy guys were "ganged up on" by the local men during the evening/nights.

If a stronger man would seriously hurt me, I would gang up on him.

Having said that, there is no way I respect or support hooligans attacking innocent people. They should be punished!

This story is from Nong Ki, I think I understand the rest of your post, if the weak are attacked, the point you make is, then the weak can (gang up) I agree.

The OP story is incorrect. These boys are not hooligans and they were not attacking innocent people.wai.gif

  9. Yip, the lease was up and as usual the increase in key money and rent made it to expensive to keep open, i remember the original farang Irish band, the place used to be jumping, but as usual they put a philipino band in like every other bar on bangla and in my opinion it turned it into just another bar

I remember both bands you have mentioned. I enjoyed the live music in there.

For me, it was a place that was in between an outdoor beer bar and a nightclub. It was good to have the option to call in there for a pint and cool down in the a/c and catch some live music.

Im sorry its gone Ive spent many a midday there and a few in the evening, with a cool draught beer, it was a small oasis from the crowds in the street rolleyes.gif

  10. Why do Thais leave their vehicle in the road, blocking traffic ,in front of the house or business they are going to, when there is a place to park it off of the road less than 10 meters away?

Same reason they drive around the supermarket carpark for 10 minutes until they can park right outside/inside the entrance.

Oh! and why are half the cars left with the engine running and the aircon on...guess...rolleyes.gif

  11. If it's a gasoline powered car, take out the rotor in the distributor.

Its a diesel and if it was a petrol it would have to be 20 years old to have a distributorrolleyes.gif

Just mark and pull the relays as posted, that will do it...

  12. I find it hard to believe that the middle class protesters in Bangkok are being paid. Where is the money coming from. We all know that at various times the redshirts have been paid and the money has come from Thaksin, but where is the money coming from to pay the anti Thaksin protesters?

Apparently the latest is they have not been paid (as promised) ...rolleyes.gif

  13. You need to register an AIR GUN here!!?? Really? blink.png I'd like to have one just to sting the soi dogs asses that bark all dam_n night long a hundred yards away from my room!

Did you read: 1200 feet per second. the velocity he is stating?

Just as a comparison, the 0.45 cal military cap automatic handgun has a muzzle velocity of about 750 fps, if I recall correctly from my loading days when I also used to load 460 Weatherby.

I would think you could kill a dog with that. But how do you get springs to shoot like that?

And the 45 is a lot heavier 200 grain bullet, or something.

What damage can a pellet gun with 1200 fps do?

To get 1200 fps you need a good .177 (a British or German-made). The pellet is too light to have much stopping power, though it will take out an eye.

To stop an intruder, you need a Korean-made Dragonslayer in .45 or .50 caliber. At 600 fps it's only half the velocity, but 25 times the energy. Takes down a boar (or deer).

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100324172525AAuz0or

If you are talking energy, then velocity is crucial since it is squared.

For example, the 0.17 caliber magnum rifle round with a muzzle velocity of over 5000 fps.

    WHAMO!

velocity x velocity x bullet weight in grains

    Velocity in Ft/sec --------------------------------------------------- = Energy in Ft/lb

  14. Too many variables. Title, age of trees, access to the land, how desperate the owner is.......

I think the owner sounds pretty depesperate but the wife has the details not me. I think it is academic anyway but really looking for a get out. It is 100 rai and the owner is asking B 6 million. At a push I could come up with half a million but the wife thinks that I have a secret stash of cash some where. I just want to prove this is overpriced, which it sounds like to me. All I know is the trees, at least some, are prducing rubber now.

Best you tell the wife you only have the 500,000... if not there will be another 100 rai around the corner.. rolleyes.gif

  15. Best you see if your country accepts a Thai license most do not ....its a joke rolleyes.gif

Incorrect. Most in fact do. And completely accepted by insurance. Some countries do require an IDP to go along with it though. In the states for example, I can legally drive on just my Thai license (no IDP needed) as long as I am only visiting and not residing there.

Not correct..Are you answering the posted question?. read it again! you are telling us that you can exchange a Thai license for a HGV license in the states rolleyes.gif

I was referring to your general comment that "It's a joke" that Thai licenses are not accepted in most other countries, which is false. If you were referring to HGV only then you should have been clearer. If you were, then your post makes no sense because as a foreigner you can't get one anyway.

The "It's a joke" was a comment on the ease of obtaining a Thai. license, yes the Thai License can be excepted in some counties for short term use, however you cannot as far as I am aware exchange it. And I like you have now been educated that we cannot obtain a HGV in Thailandrolleyes.gif.pagespeed.ce.hZ59UWKk-s.gif

  17. Is it possible to get a larger/heavier car/truck license in Thailand?

I'm thinking of one possibility that I would return back to Europe some day and wish to buy a car which is heavier than 3500kg. It might be more easy and way more cheaper to do a license here and transfer that to local license in Europe.
