  1. Is it possible to get a larger/heavier car/truck license in Thailand?

I'm thinking of one possibility that I would return back to Europe some day and wish to buy a car which is heavier than 3500kg. It might be more easy and way more cheaper to do a license here and transfer that to local license in Europe.

Best you see if your country accepts a Thai license most do not ....its a joke rolleyes.gif

    U.K does for one !

Are you sure,? Yes you can drive I think for 6 Months on it, thats if you can find any firm to insure you or hire you a car ! I would be interested if you have any rights to a HGV license, you obviously have first hand knowlege of this please inform us. rolleyes.gif

    From one extreme to another.

Just from the back of my mind but I think it actually would slow down the traffic if enforced. Now with all the effort (in my experience) done here to avoid, delaying and paying bills I see the speed cameras only as another media show for the public and the international audience. It will whatever the size of fines never function.

Would be good if it works, but no one would/ could pay the fine and I would think 25% dont have a license to confiscate.. 10 years to early I think! rolleyes.gif

  6. Don't bother, they're not dog proof. You will end up with litter all over the road.

True but, had two for these bins for last ten years, they have few faults the lids and leg supports fall apart but easliy repaired with bent nails and tie wraps, and the dogs well just tie the lid down with a motorcycle bugee.

To answer your question about where to buy I'm not sure but told that a shop that makes bamboo houses near the new Tesco in Talang (same side down toward two sisters sells them..rolleyes.gif

  7. Thanks ..do I get the tax refund form from the bank or the local tax office..

    rolleyes.gif

Get the tax form from your local tax office. Get the tax letter from your bank. The tax letter from your bank is a very short form type letter on the bank's letterhead with signature that confirms X-amount of tax was withheld...that amount will match what is shown in your passbook. You attach that letter and copy of your passbook to the tax form. I expect your local tax office will gladly help you fill out the form as long as you go in with some puppy dog eyes like I do.

Thanks for the reply that covers it all..

  8. Withholding tax is 15% deducted by the bank. Depending on your tax situation, you can get the 15% back when filing a tax return to the rev. dept. The following year.

Just to clarify, when saying "filing a tax return" I think most people would think they have to file a full blown Thai tax return; that's not the case for obtaining a refund of the 15% withholding tax which applies to fixed accounts. Just one specific, simple form with a copy of your passport, the withholding tax document from the bank, and a copy of your passbook is required....takes 2 to 6 weeks to get the refund via check or cash. Varies for tax office to tax office servicing your area as to how long it takes them to process the refund and whether they pay the refund via check or cash. On my last refund they paid cash and it took 6 weeks, but my tax office said they had some policy and equipment issues which slowed them down this year.

Just to clear up a point, if I am on a retirement visa with a fixed deposit account that tax has been taken from, then I can fill in a tax form and have the tax money returned, no work permit, no nothing..rolleyes.gif

Yeap...yeap...you'll get a refund...no work permit required. I'm on a retirement visa/extension of stay with fixed deposit account.

  10. If you mean this location http://map.panphuket.com/mappoint/element-factory

It's a new element factory for the houses.

I rode by that location today and stopped BIB car which was leaving the place to ask what is build there. At least that was the explanation I got from them. There might also be some errors in communication.

What is an element factory & for what houses?

Thats for pre making walls etc for homes or apartment buildings which are then delivered to the location where the house is stacked a bit like kids do with Legos. You might have a better term for this type of construction.

The aim is to speed up the building process and quality.

There factories has been popping up around the island. There is (or was) one close to BIS and another at Bang Rong.

    Innova-passivehouse-renovation-detail-30

If concrete they are known as ''pre cast panels'' in Aus..wai.gif

I'm told its building supplies, your explanation sounds correct, its large and the roof tells you its no central..rolleyes.gif

  11. Yes I too find the knee-jerk cynicism here tiresome and offensive.

And IMO there's nothing wrong with an old fool spending time with and money on his pretty younger SO, as long as he keeps his wits about him, doesn't let himself get deluded, makes sure his long-term personal financial viability isn't threatened, ideally makes sure he continues to get good value for time/energy/devotion and money spent.

The fact that so many do let themselves get deluded is IMO their own fault, and most of the time the girls have earned every s'tang they've been able to scam.

    .

Yeah I agree, but I draw the line when I am sat on the beach chatting to a very smart, well mannered, and clued up old boy having a few beverages, that then tells me at 70 he's wacked a kid out with her (if in fact it is his), then has the audacity to blame her, the rice farmer instructed by daddy to extract as much cash as is physically possible - at 70 can you really be that naive? To be fair this was three years back now and she had already allowed her family to 'spend half of what he has left in the kitty'. His words, not mine, so I would not be surprised if he is rinsed dry by now, or they've split because he's realised he can't afford the duration.

Why not hire a whore? Least then you know where you stand? I could not fault the old chap, he was ever so interesting, had many marvelous stories and conversation points. I could not help feeling sorry for the poor old sod who ( if was his baby ) is unlikely to see said baby through school, let alone married or successful and standing on their own two feet (which as a dad is all I hope for of my children daily), hence why I take such a dim view of all the negative posts on this site. It's not just bad people getting stung in Thailand. His fault - thinking a girl less than half is age truly enjoyed playing hide the sausage with him, caught up in the excitement of it all - and yeh, as previously mentioned we are talking about a proper smart old boy (aside from the wifey issue)

So naturally, I get the <deleted> when I see nasty cynical anonymous comments towards the OP here, specially when he's a decent level headed chap not chasing a twenty year old skirt thinking it's the one this time - while his story does ring alarm bells, he is not bottom feeding is he. Her families got their nice little restaurant business (OP account), and her dad is doing a decent honest job. He pops up on the board honest as day and tells us his interesting story to get shot down by burnt fools. Make no mistake on that - burnt fools.

Good luck to you I say Sir. Please do let us know how you get on (whether positive or negative).

And David, that's as far as I go, for all I know the fools I am talking about here are members. So if you need a good laugh, get some pals in the village, rather than an anonymous gossip board, I'd be glad to have a beer with you - if indeed your interests are of a farming/natural nature. Cheers.

Edit - and I would love to tell you about the thumping coming up in the next Ashes! smile.png

I didn't mean to say that we shouldn't be warning people who come here with sincere and heart-warming stories that all may not be as rosy at it seems.

Just that we should do so gently and with sincerity rather than the tone of sarcastic glee used by so many "ho ho here's another sucker", when in fact he may well be onto a good thing.

The fundamental fault in your tale of the old guy is revealed by " she had already allowed her family to 'spend half of what he has left in the kitty'".

And of course he's an idiot, as is anyone giving their SO discretionary access to his retirement funds, no matter how much she may love him and be sincere still doesn't mean giving up control over your destiny to the extent of in effect signing over power of attorney to your financial adviser.

I don't know about the other posters here but I would rather spend the last years of my life in Thailand with someone to (take care) of me, with all the problems that (may?) bring, assuming that I would have some control over the situation, than to sit waiting in an old peoples home back in the UK with a knife and fork in my hand at 9am for dinner at 12...YOU will pay for both but I would suggest that the former is the best optionrolleyes.gif and in the end cheaper.....

  12. "I love those 2 stroke bikes... so much POWER! specially at the 3rd gear."

The 'power' doesn't relate to the gear, but to the torque band, and that's a narrow rpm band in a 2 stroke, unlike a 4 stroke, which has a wide torque band, so much smoother acceleration.

I think 2 strokes should be outlawed because of the visual and noise pollution they cause, spewing smoke, and a horrible rattly sound.

A bit like the Corsair then, thought you would like it..rolleyes.gif

  13. Aah - with booster ? Never seen that here in Phuket. You need to buy a booster as extra piece of kit.

Not sure about the boaster with cable, I have 3 tvs just with the spliter, in fact one is a simple twist together job and all have good pictures rolleyes.gif

  14. Does any one know where I can get a water pump for a Phantom 150?

    Thanks

I had my first ride on the 150 a few days ago, its for sale B25000 its in Issan about 100k s/w of Burriram, town of Nong Ki, if anyone is interested it ran well and is in good con'd but noiser that the 200 rolleyes.gif

  15. Without knowing the full story..

I would probably just pay the loan, why is he making his wife, who you say he has a good relationship with, struggle to pay the loan (why did she need the second loan, when he could have probably fixed it).

This is what people in good relationships with children do, they help each other even if there has been a stupid mistake made.

There has to be more to this.

    totster smile.png

Correct, he is on retirement extention and his wife earns B6000 then he has substantial earnings or B800000 in the bank.. tell him or (maybe) the OP to pay up rolleyes.gif

  16. What a mess !

To be legally married you must register at the Ampoe office. A ceremony in the temple will make you married in the eyes of the Gods only, not in the eyes of the law.

Then we got the "rich daddy" thing. If the local loan sharks think that you will always settle your wife's debts in the end, then they will continue to let her borrow more and more. If you put your foot down and refuse to pay her debts, then the loan sharks will not let her borrow any more and they will settle for a reltively modest monthly repayment plan.

    indeed a mess

I dont know much about it , but is it possible to advice a postnuptial ?

You seem to be going to a lot of trouble for a friend, very commendable rolleyes.gif

  17. I know that if you fly Biz Class with Malaysian Airlines you are taken by a uniformed lady through VIP Immigration Security and direct to the lounge.

Alas with Thai even with Gold Card you have to Q same as everybody else but the lounge at Thai is much better.

Qatar same as Malaysian Airline rolleyes.gif

  18. They do have a scanning machine now at Phuket airport at the exit after collecting your luggage, I came though two months ago and was suprised to see it, I was stopped and the luggage seached seems a kilo of cheese triggered it, they looked and sent me on my wayrolleyes.gif
