  1. Is there a direct bus to Singapore from Bangkok?
You can certainly get a bus to Haad Yai and then a bus from Haad Yai to Singapore.

Do you have any more info about this direct bus from Haad Yai to Singapore?

    Thanks.....

Everyone of the many travel agents in HadYai sell bus tickets, but mainly to Johore Bahru. Larkin bus station. From there regular buses to Singapore. The bus in Haad Yai will pick u up at hotel or anywhere. They mainly leave at 10am,11am & noon

Better is the Langkawi Express sleeper train. Leaves Haad Yai 14.50 gets to KL 06.45 [ but often late] Connecting train from KL to Singapore. As far as I know u can only buy a ticket for Langkawi Express in Haad Yai train station. The ticket counter closest to the tracks. The advance purchase office does not sell tickets for this train.

  2. Some trains have power outlets [ I've seen microwave ovens in use] but not at the seats.

They sell booze - vendors walk up & down or go to dining car. Food is ordinary. Eat b4 or get a take out

The ac varies. For me its too cold so I travel 2nd class fan. You will get a blanket.

There are showers in 2nd class fan. If there r only 2 carriages there will probably only b 1 carriage that has the shower - cold water. Often there is not enough water for a shower at the end of the trip.

The train goes to Nong Khai Thailand. From the Nong Khai station short trip to bridge. Cross into Laoland take bus/taxi to Vientianne [no train] about 12 miles. :o

  3. I just saw an internet ad for a guest hostel called Monkey Island. It says a private room is 100 Baht, but I have not seen prices like that for years in Thailand. I would bet that when you got there, the price of a room was 250 Baht.

There is a sign at Monkey Island saying 100bt a night but I was told its share bathroom. If u go about 50 metres past there a fairly new hotel has good rooms with prices u can negotiate

  4. hel_l I'd just settle for a boy taking me for a picnic at the park haha

(Actually, I love picnics in parks)

interesting to see all the blokes are choosing places where you can gorge yourself isnt it. i would also prefer the picnic in the park. nothing too flash. nice bottle of wine, some good food.

the most important thing is the company in my opinion.

who wants clowns on a date? (often, the bloke is a big enough clown)

Thai women are big eaters & like going to all u can eat places.

We stopped going to picnics in the park coz we would always get people coming up asking for money.

  5. Tachileik [ opposite Mae Sai] visa is $10US or 500 BAHT on arrival. This is for 14 days. U could go to Kengtung. U can stay in Tachileik also.

Huay Xai [ opposite Chiang Khong] visa starts at $30US but goes up to $42 for Canadians. Can get visa on arrival. This is for 30 days.

Borders open everyday [except when there is some dramarama near Mae Sai]

time in Burma is half an hour behind Thai.

officially 8am to 6pm thai time

  6. Any idea on COST of posting? By rail it will be about Baht 800, roughly the same as a person going by 2nd class sleeper.

Percy2 is correct in that Pattaya has a railway station with infrequent services to Bkk. Trains may not have a baggage wagon.

There is 1 train a day from Pattaya to BKK . It will connect with the night train. There has always been a baggage car, if not they can put the bike in the passageway

  7. Where does one find tom kha gai for a few pence a bowl these days? Let's get real folks ... it's at least GBP1 (75 baht) a bowl these days - Thailand ain't so cheap anymore!!!! :o

Plenty of restaurants in the north at 20 Baht for all dishes - seafood 30BT

  8. Of course it exists, I doubt anyone would dispute that. But - and here is the but - whatever you have going against you in Thailand, you have it going against you multiple times in Malaysia.

Imagine a country where not only foreigners are discriminated against, but even close to 40% of their own population are legally second-tier citizens.

As for getting PR or even citizenship . . . :o

The only advantage I see with Malaysia is that the majority of people speak English. . . . and that's it.

I'm interested to understand your pov on how the 40% are legally second-class. From what I know, the Malay Chinese for example, are generally wealthier, have better education [overseas - as they can afford it], gets further in the corporate world [except state companies, which are hardly world class], are active in politics [quite a number of ministers in the government] etc.etc

There is a quota for university entrance that favours Malays so other races are denied entry & have to go overseas. Many of these families struggle with this expense. They are just small business people.

  9. hi

I think Lopburi is worth a visit, especially the old town which is where the train station is. There are 8 older style hotels within 5 minutes walk of the train station. These places have a steady flow of backpackers. The ruins are worth a visit & you will not get hassled like you will in Ayuttya. In the evening there is a street food market along the road next to the railway line.Good food & relaxed atmosphere.

Ther are better hotels in the new part of town. You would need to get transport to go there.

If you can get to Phitsanulok by 10.18am there is a rapid train that goes to Nakhon Sawan at 12.52 & on to Lopburi at 14.48. [ train often runs a bit late] Still give you a good time to look around - plus morning if you wish.

To go to Singburi/Suphanburi it is not necessary to go to bus station. Can get the bus as it comes past near the monkey temple. This is a non ac bus. Interesting things to see along this route.

I agree with Kan Win nothing of interest in Suphanburi unless you can spot a disgraced ex PM. :o

Lots to see in Kan. Erawan national park waterfall is good.
