  1. Hi Everyone

I am going to show my spectacular ignorance of all things mathematical here and would be very grateful if someone could help me solve what should be a simple problem. Ithought I'd put Cm's brightest brains onit.

    I have a rectangle 426 wide x 320 high

I want to make the width 233 what should the height be to keep it in proportion?

I am sure it has something to do with 1.33 but i have no idea what.

I would be very grateful to anyone who can give me an immediate answer. Free beer to the first correct response :o

    Thanks from a mathematical dunce

    233/426% = 54.694835 so 320/100x54.694835=175.02347

    proportion size should be 233 x 175

  2. Morning all,

Before I telephone him, has anyone got the required letter stating Baht 65000 etc a month for extension to get a retirement visa from the UK Consul in CM. If yes, is there a charge ? (Phuket consul does it for free) I am hoping I dont have to travel to BKK just for a piece of paper.

    P :o

I thought (maybe wrongly) a retirement visa (over 50) was 400,000 in a Thai bank account for minimum 3 months ? and nothing to do with income based visa which needs consul confimation letter and minimum 40,000 a month if under 50.

I am under 50 and married to Thai and only have the income option to qualify me for my non "o" with salary coming from the uk, the money in the bank wasnt an option, so not 100% sure about retirement visa requirements, but from posts i have read in visa section on here i thought was the bank balance and not income was the requirement for retirement visa.

In answer to your question yes the Uk Consul in Chaing Mai can give you the proof of income letter (with correct documentation) at a charge of 1,700 ish baht.

  3. I solved my eternal festive season 'what shall I send to Auntie Flo' problems early this year by walking into Rim Ping supermarket over the weekend and discovering a cute 2008 Chiang Mai charity calendar for a hundred baht, which has some really charming schoolchildren's paintings, plus the kind of descriptive text about Lanna which you might want to write yourself to get friends to come over and spend a week's holiday here.

As the proceeds are being given to kid's charities I decided to plug it. It's a sweet and easy gift for chums, mums, and grannies and will likely stay on the mantelpiece for a whole year instead of ending up in the bin on the Twelfth Night, so every time they look at it they'll remember you. That might get you into a will you were formally out of! Now that's value!

There's a whole shipload of rats around here - so I don't blame you for being wary.

I purchased mine through the Expats. Club - but I think you'll find these calendars available in many bookshops around town . They're quite delightful, informative and interesting. They're robustly made

and would stand proudly on any desk and would make an excellent gift . IMO, very well worth the 100 baht - even if not a penny reached the charity ! I'm sure though, that the organisers are reputable.

"which might make you millions" ? Yes it will no doubt make somebody millions. :o

  4. This has been done before but just wondering if anyone knows if they're available in Muang Thai yet? Tried Amorn but they never heard of em.

Hi-freq' noise generator the size and shape of a big remote. Like this:

The moobahn is pretty quiet on the mutt front but next door have this semi-cute, annoying f*nny licker type thing that likes to sound off every now and then... as well as nipping over our side to restructure the new lawn on occasion :D He needs a bit of discipline and one would like to do it the quiet way so as not to offend the rather nice neighbour, so a quick blast of a discreet nuclear-powered hand-held device would be fantastic... if they do indeed work.

I've noticed others have imported, but it'd be nice not to have to have 3000% tax bunged on it or lose it altogether. :o

    Cheers

OH YES i want one of these also

ps/ Will it work on the wife ???

  5. I just want to know if there will be pinyatas and clowns at this one - Buckwheat ditched that idea in the official party. By virtue of the TV popultion we have plenty of clowns but I for one want to see a paper donkey hanging from the ceiling this time.

    CB

What would you like it filled with?

Free beer, pole dancers and peanuts please MB :o

  6. If you can't find a cage, i've heard another way of torturing a bird is clipping its wings and keeping it in a bin liner with some holes in it for oxygen to get through. Other than that, you can pull the legs off spiders.

For sure you should be caged and muzzled IDIOT :o

  7. I'm heading to Vientienne in a couple of weeks and although I know there are lots of hotels all over the city I don't fancy walking around too much when I get there.

Has anybody recently visited and found a hotel that has surprised them for beauty & price? Something quiet but near the river? Reasonably priced, not expensive and not cheap?...

Any recommendations are appreciated - except for the depressing 'pale & stale' hotel rooms the cyclo drivers will recommend when I arrive in town...

    Nikkijah

We stopped at the Lao Orchid Hotel (try this link) hotel in early Jan this year and found it really nice although a little more expensive than most at about 1,400 baht per night but would deffinately recommend it if fits into your budget and only 2-3 mins walk to the river

  8. It's best not to put birds in cages. You enjoy it but they really do not.

My parrots cage doors are always open apart from when we go out, which saves me having to replace any wood furniture we have.

If i wanted tips on parrot care i would have asked for them :D

Look on the web , you can get flatpack cages in all shapes and sizes, from reputable dealers in butterworth , KL, even Singapore, I realise you know everything about parrot care, but as a retired zoo curator and experienced and Recognised macaw and Cockatoo breeder, furniture munching is a sign of poor diet and sometimes boredom , give your birds young palmfronds or fresh softbark branches to munch on then they will leave your furniture alone :o Nignoy

Many thanks p1p for that perhaps a visit to Bangkok weekend after next is in order.

Nignoy i didnt anywhere say that i knew everything about parrot care or that it HAD munched any furniture it hasnt yet, the parrot in question has a full and very varied diet and has lots of fresh branches it destroys almost daily, i am suprised you imply otherwise without knowing me or the parrot, this is probably one of the most pampered parrots in Thailand! I was merely pointing out to sendbaht that i was requesting information on where to purchase a better quality cage not where to get tips on parrot care :D

  10. BTW, if I understand RJJ correctly, this feature on voipdiscount is very trick. Initiate call on their site, connect 2 phones (say a landline in Oz, US, where ever, and a Thai mobile). As they are both incoming calls, no charge on that end. And the voipdiscount charge, only .05 EU/min. This would allow princealbert and those who want to walk about, etc. during a call- without having to buy a wireless VoIP handset. Very cool. I might have to try this..... :o

    I thought i was confused before :D

So i picked up my router today from TOT to find out its not viop enabled so now i need a ATA adapter ? Can i plug my non voip phone into this or do i need a viop phone also ?

  11. If your computer has bluetooth you can get a wireless bluetooth headset and once your voip call is connected you can wander around the room talking. Depending on the construction materials your living space is made of, you could possibly wander to another room and keep on talking. Even if your machine did not come with bluetooth, you can get a bluetooth usb dongle [hold the dongle jokes :-) ] that would give the machine bluetooth capability. Keep watching, voip phones are starting to take off and the prices should be falling in the next few years. Good luck.

Just so happens i have a dongle that i use to transfer photos and video from my mobile phone, will this be compatable with all bluetooth headsets ?

  12. That headset/mic combination should work perfectly. No other hardware needed. Just download the software, and you should be good to go.

    McG

    Thanks for that McG

Dont like to spend money where i dont have to.

Probably just had too many years pressing buttons and gonna be another habit i must break.

  13. Hey Marc,

Old habits die hard, and are <deleted> expensive, when it comes to VoIP. The adaptor and/or handset combo will probably cost something around 100 EU.

If you have a laptop (as I do) you can buy a cheesy looking little earbud with mini boom style mic that plugs into the mic/in and audio/out. Costs about 200 B at IT City (Panthip Plaza). The savings will pay for about 3 years worth of phone calls on Skype.... :o

    Hi Mark

I have a nice Labtec headset/mike i used to use for conversations on msn messenger when back in the UK, is this any good ? or will this also need an adapter also ? but really do want to use a handset.

Eh 100 EU ?? how much in baht ??

  14. Looking to buy voip phone but not sure whats best to look for.

Dont really want to use headset with mike so looking for normal phone or can i buy an adapter for my cordless ?

    All recommendatiuons gratefully received.

  15. These may seem really simple questions but i am no techy and would really appreciate any advise.

Ok so i am almost there with my broadband connection. (allegedly Thursday)

I prefer to use handset opposed to headset. (old habits die hard)

Do i need to buy a voip phone or adapter for my present telephone ?

Either way any recommendtions on what and where ?

If a voip adapter can i use with my present cordless phone ?

    Many Thanks

  16. Why do people keep saying skype's free? I understood it's free only to another sype connected computor - and that's not always going to happen.

There are lots of satisfied skype users above to America. Anyone using it to Europe? If so is it much cheaper than the ais 008, 009 option? Anyone know which of those is the right prefix for France and for the UK?

I am with TOT you can use 007 (9 baht per min) or 008 (7 baht per min) to the UK, but hopefully should have braodband next week so will be using www.voipdiscount.com

FREE calls to the UK. YIPPEE

  18. I could never recomend this bar to anyone visiting, or living in Thailand.

I am sure that if you contacted Chas (the owner) and told him you thought you were overcharged he would rectify this in an instant !

I am a frequent patron of Tuskers and would recommend this bar to EVERYONE either visiting or living in Thailand and am certain this would be seconded by many on this forum.
