  1. What is a long shot? You didn't write what your question is, unless you mean the title

"Wide Angle Lens For Canon, Any places in CM sell quality 2nd hand camera lenses?"

    What model?

Does it need an adaptor or is it one with intercahngable lenses?

What are you looking for? Genuine Canon or proprietary make? Wide, ultra wide? 28mm, 35mm, 18mm?

  2. I would suggest that she goes into one of the many camera retail stores that are located in all the larger towns in Thailand and buy a new camera there. They have all the popular brands and price ranges.

I quite agree, she can buy one here, you pay for it. No risk of getting lost or broken in the post. No extra customs. Can check it works before she buys, can return under gaurantee.

  3. Hi there

I don't know your torrent program nor your router/modem but usually the help files or preferences/options etc will tell you what ports to open. Often a five digit number. Copy the number and paste it into your "Open Port Start" and "Open Port End" May need putting in the Trigger port start & end boxes as well. Play about with it.

If you're not sure where to find the port number try 9090 as per this link

  4. who carrys a weapon in thailand?

    what do you carry ?

    ever had to use it?

why? ( do you feel safer?)

    what are the legal ramifications?

any advise on perosnal protection type self defence weapons?

    any postive/negitive storys ?

I always ,(after age of 16 and when coming to the opinion that one has to have something to even the odds against criminals )carry a concealed folding blade in my life i have never pulled it in anger

there are a few times perhaps I pulled it too quick

there are a few situations where I have been able to stop trouble from starting ( here a taxi driving grabbed a metal rod intent on beating some guys butt, but decided not to when he saw the steel)

and others where i can thank having a weapon for good outcome for the good guys

    SD

first you say you have never pulled it in anger then you state you pulled it to quick !!??

I moved to CM to avoid the danger of big cities and the lack of weapons carried by the everyman. And the peaceful nature in general. Let me know where you hang out so I can avoid those places :)

yeah, once went over to assist a "lady" she was being beat up real bad by a guy she called ' honey" he was with a group and so i felt outnumbered

I called to him holding the blade just down

so he knew I had it

' hey buddy, cool it, she's had enough, the cop's are coming"

she turns to me, her face all bloody and tell me fXX off!

I learned a long time ago never to interfere in a domestic dispute. The female sticks up for the guy beating her up. As regards here in Thailand, getting involved is making you stand out and the Thai guy's mates will seize the opportunity to teach you to mind your own business. Aside from that, I have lived here for ten years and have never felt safer. I can walk around Pattaya at any time whereas I wouldn't venture out in my hometown in the UK. Obviously I don't walk in unsafe areas, though I don't really know any really bad areas, and keep my eyes and ears open. Carry a weapon? No thanks, the nasty types will take it off you and use it against you.

Perhaps, if you are honest with yourself, you may recognise the fact that you are out to prove something rather than just defend yourself. You went to assist a lady? Call the police, let someone else deal with it. If you had rescued her you would only have a problem later because the guy had lost face.

  5. India was one of the most unhygienic countries I have ever been to with people openly sh!tting in the street as the norm.

You'd need a real good reason to want to live there.

You would want a really good reason to even go there, never mind live there. The only good reason for landing in India is that you are in a Transit lounge.

  6. I teach in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver, Canada, and there are loads of people of India origin in Surrey. Many of my students go "to the Punjab" and I ask them about it. One rather attractive young female student(about 16) was chased relentlessly in the streets, but she has been there many times and thought it was funny. The worst thing i heard was some of my students said they stepped over dead people in the streeet, or dying ones. I said (foolishly) to them.."does noone help them?" They replied if you help them, you could be charged with murdering them if they die as you are assisting them. i did not believe it, but it gave me a snippet of the harshness there.

On a trip to Goa I asked a tour guide why the locals were prodding what appeared to be people sleeping. I thought that they just wanted to get rid of them to prettify the place for tourists. No, I was told that if they don't move when they are poked with a stick it means they are dead. Every morning a lorry went around collecting the dead bodies.

Lovely place! Avoid it like the plague.

I went for a short trip a couple of years ago. Never again!!! Filthy, disgusting. Kids living and playing on filthy rubbish dumps. Huge signs telling people to use a toilet, not crap in the street (they ignored it though so be careful where you walk). Beggars at every corner - never make the mistake of giving anything to anyone, no matter how much you sympathise with their plight, it will only encourage loads of others to crowd you. Watch Slumdog Millionairre for a glimpse of the slums.

Traffic? I much prefer driving in Thailand, and that says a lot. Especially when I saw a traffic policeman sat with what looked like a Kalashnikov. Taxis without aircon so the windows are open, hence lots of exhaust fumes to breathe in. Constant beeping of horns, not a second goes by without someone leaning on their horn.

    Never, never never again.

  8. Hi,

Anyone know where serving a decent baked potato, with chilli or other fillers as a main dish? All I can find is places serving baked potatoes as an extra with steaks etc..

    Cheers and big up Potatoes!

One of my regular ,eals is a baked potato with tuna & ,ayonaisse in the Queen Vic on Soi 6. Another great reason to go to Soi 6.

  9. Now, as a recent thread attests, many of our besotted PTY punters will be highly concerned about the cuteness of the dentist. We need a site for comparing photos, do we not? I can tell you that I had a root canal done at St Louis (BKK) by a HOT young thing and not only did she overcharge but did lousy work to boot. An incompetent dentist can do a helluva lot of damage. So I don't give a shit what a dentist, or a surgeon, looks like. But at Banglamung--sorry, guys (and lesbians I guess)--I just couldn't see much behind the dental masks and head coverings, though the "fillings" lady, a Chula grad, had very nice eyes. If those aren't good enough for you, then you'll just need to drool elsewhere (pun intended) and pay 3-4 times more for said drooling. What about fixating on some young female patients out in the waiting room? The public hospitals usually have large crowded waiting rooms, so there's bound to be one or two there.

There is a small private dental surgery hidden away not far from Banglamung hospital. No English written on the window, only Thai. They are superquick, extremely efficient, all three of those that worked on my filling, a few months ago, are pretty.

Never been before but I went in and registered, was in the chair withimn a few minutes , had a fillling removed and replaced. I was out in 20 minutes.

  10. Basically a practice to charge you for using your own dosh.

But you are not withdrawing your own money. You are withdrawing the bank's money that the bank has placed inside their machine, their money. They then have to get it from the bank abroad. If you carried the cash over then you can say it is your money.

If I ask you for 10,000 Bt and say you can collect it from my UK bank would you agree?

  11. However, when all of this contovery started I did feel that the banks had a right to charge for the ATM use. The machines cost money to buy, to service and maintain a cash flow. They want paying for that service.

I thought that banks saved money by getting customers to use ATMs, as it saves them all the time and money it would take dealing with all those customers, were they to suddenly be flooding through their doors for every single transaction. For a start, just think of all the extra bank tellers they would need to employ.

When cash machines (they weren't called ATMs then!) were introduced in the UK i said to a bank employee who was praising them that they wouldn't be so happy when most of the staff would be out of a job. Go into a UK bank now and compare the number of staff to what we had years ago. Compare the numbers of staff and the quality of service to the banks here in Thailand. Give me Thai banks any day.

Banks are in business to earn money. They are not there to provide a free service for tourists.

Waiting for the whingers to have a good moan now...........

  12. What I don't understand is, all these people complaining abut this ATM fee; why don't they use a Thai bank account instead? You live here presumably?

At last. A voice of reason. Changing the banking practices, you may as well try and stop the sun rising. Just get a local bank account.

I used a bank of Ayuddaya today using a UK card. No extra charge made. I normally use either my Kasikorn or Siam Commercial cards but had left them at home.

However, when all of this contovery started I did feel that the banks had a right to charge for the ATM use. The machines cost money to buy, to service and maintain a cash flow. They want paying for that service.

How many of the complainers would like to supply a machine of some kind for free use by any visitor? Free car, camera to help you enjoy a holiday anyone?

  13. Hello,

I'd like to rent a bicycle (as opposed to a motorcycle) in Pattaya for a few weeks. It's just a better way to stay in shape and nicer way to get around, at least in my opinion.

So far, I've seen only one hotel (a-one hotel on Beach Road near soi 3...call it a-zero hotel) renting cheap 3000 baht worth bikes. The Hotel wanted 150 Baht / 3 hours + 100 U.S.$ deposit + my passeport. I told them they really didn't want to rent these bikes. Let's move on.

Anyone knows where I can rent for a longer period of time, like 1, 2 or 3 weeks?

    Thanks!

    Ryle

I think the easiest thing to do is go to Tesco or Big C, or even a specialist bike shop, and buy a new one. No worry about losing a deposit when you return it. Have someone ready to buy it cheap when you leave. Buy a cheap one at 1,000 Bt, that will be 50 Bt per day for three weeks use, plus a return if you sell it.

  14. "Marijuana make people think" ? :D

:D ...if everybody on Thaivisa would write like you the doors would be closed in 2 days.

:D Maybe you think it's a kind of funny writing but try to write in proper English instead this kid's stuff. Grow up.

    LaoPo

Well said...or well written. I read it a couple of times then gave up trying to understand it. Even kids don't write like that. I just put it down to illiteracy. And too much drug usage. Perhaps a good example of brain damage caused by drugs.

  15. Buy a Return Air Ticket in case things dont go to plan, that way you can always get home.

I doubt that he would be allowed to fly without a return ticket, or may be refused a visa on arrival if he can't show a return ticket.

The idea of travelling around Thailand to cheap places is a no-no as well. How will he communicate? He won't find English spoken in many places, little in the way of written English.

Trying to do it on minimmal cash as well. Go somewhere else where the language and money won't be so much of a problem.

  16. You didn't mention if you are male or female. If you are female just complain to the head of the department yourself saying that he is a sex pest. Suggest the head then asks others if they are being abused by him.

If you are male just tell him that he can not bully you and if he continues to be a pest then you will report him yourself.

Be aware though that he may say that you are interested in the femaale teacher yourself and just want to force him out of the picture.

Ultimayely it is her responsibility to report it, though bullies rely on the fact that the vistim is usually too scared and under too much pressure. Good luck

  17. You’ll need either a work permit or a non-O immigration visa in your passport to open a Thai bank account these days.

Deposit of 500-1000 Baht is required with Bangkok Bank (head office, silom road) when open a new account in your name.

I have several accounts, Be 1st debit card and internet banking as well based on non-O immigration visa with Bangkok Bank head office. :)

Sorry, but you are wrong. I recently sold a house and went to the bank (SCB) with the buyers. I asked for the money in cash to place in my Kasikorn account. They didn't like the idea of me carrying a lot of cash so they suggested I open an account with them (SCB) but I said I didn't have my passport or a letter from Immigration. They asked for my driving licence and immediately opened an account. Just asked me to take my passport in later.

  18. The reason that these laundries and many other businesses are closing is simple Mai mee Falong, mai mee satong! No tourists, No money! This is the 5th yr of slow tourism caused by tsunami, SARS, bird/swine flu, bad economy and all the bad publicity this country gets. This compiled with new visa laws, many full timers and long timers are leaving, and new tourists are not coming. If you count on just Thais for business then your price has to be low, and you have to survive the way Thais do. You need a good local clientele just to get by during low season, the tourist on season is where you make your net. After the way this country chases away Falong ,short time tourists and long time expats ,there is no Falong customers base only Thai and they have no money, because they can't make any without foreigners here spending it! A viscous cycle! A difficult time to keep a business going let alone start a new business! Save your money ,you're gonna' need it!

Spot on! I have had mates here who went down the same road of opening a laundry. They were the ones who were cleaned out, not the clothes. No tourists means no customers for anyone. Save your money, find something original, especially if Thais haven't done it.

  19. Guilty shoplifting tourists being offered freedom for a price. :)

I have been through the airport 10 times in the last few months. I was never scammed. How many others have also passed through without problems?

I have met many prisoners who declared they were not guilty.

So, what do we have? I guess that they got caught stealing, thinking that an hour later they would be untouchable as they were flying out of the country. Then they get caught. They then have a choice, wait until the case comes to court or pay up to get away. I agree that the amounts asked is extortion though.

  20. Hi guys, sorry for not being clear in the first post. I have or had 1 years extention of stay which I have re-newed 4 years on the trot at Suan Plu. this is the first time I have left the country in all this time. it shoul of expired on May 2010, but now with the new stamp it will expire August 23rd 2009.

    thanks for the help.

It looks like you didn't get a re-entry permit. Have you never heard about this? Without one you cancelled your visa when you departed and got a normal 30 Days as a tourist.

Hopefully immigration may be lenient when you plead ignorance. The more stupid you appear (that doesn't mean you are, just pretend) the more likely they are to give you the benefit of the doubt as a stupid farang. They can then show their superiority over you.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

  21. Hi all

I have my daughter for visit 8 weeks. I wanted her to become mobile so when she arrived she started the procedure to get a motorbike driving license.

First obstacle was the question test. She is only 18 and not too familiar with some English words. She was not allowed to bring a lexikon to the test. This means that all farangs who cannot read English VERY good cannot pass? In my home country that is discrimination.

Also seems to me that many questions have multiple possible answers. Not easy, even for me having had a european driving license for 40 year.

Anyway, she passed and time to do the driving test. She lined up and the instructors gave som good advice to all students. IN THAI.

Now, my daughter do not understand thai, which means she used the brake when she svirwled around the cones. Did not pass, of course.

Next week she tries again, but missed 30 cm at the end of the long board. Did not pass, of course.

Many thais put down their foot during the test, but they passsed.

Now heres the questions I hope someone can answer.

I have a bad feeling that thais pass easily but farang must pass 110%. I hope I am wrong.

When driving the long board test there are yellow lines to the left up to 70% of the length. To me that means you have to be on the board as far as the lines. My daughter went off AFTER the lines. What are the lines for.

Now, finally they tell me she cannot do a new test until 6 months. Means she is effectively stopped.

All this trouble for nothing. My daughter have more than two year experience of a so called EU-motorbike in Sweden but cannot pass a thai test though trying several times.

I am against bribing but this is one of the times that I might consider it. I feel my daughter have been jurked around and that the system do whatever they can to stop farangs getting a driving license.

    Can anyone answer me?

Surely the easiest answer is simply get her an International Driving Permit. She is only here for a few weeks.
