  1. Unless the Thai government wises up, Thai people are never going to learn how to speak conversational native English. There are no Asian countries that speak "native English" that they can pull resources from. Why does a native English speaker need a bachelor's degree to teach English in Thailand? I'm an American citizen born and raised in Chicago, worked in Information Technology for 40 years without a bachelor's degree and perfectly capable of teaching much more than conversational English. There is a great number of highly intelligent Westerners with technical backgrounds in Thailand on retirement visas that are perfectly capable of teaching native English and other subjects to Thai people.

I have some good sound advice for those of you in charge. Simply change the law for teaching requirements, let us teach on a retirement visa, pay us an attractive wage with a good benefits package and we will be happy to help you. I was recently in HCMC and the Vietnamese people are way ahead of you! HELP US HELP YOU!!!

although I highly respect most of your posts and find them to be a good read - you are way off with this one.

Having lived here a very long time I see no evidence of changes of the type you are suggesting.

What has happened however are three fold

    - Thailand has become very expensive mostly down to the strength of the baht, people I know that came here on a regular basis are no longer coming.

    - the authorities decided to treat western tourists with contempt, they are making it harder and harder for tourists from the west to travel and stay here, so why are they doing this - to my 3rd point

    - they have foolishly overestimated the value that tourists from places like India and China bring here, there may be big numbers arriving but what are they doing when they get here - certainly not spending money because they generally don't have much, I see Indians wondering about in groups just looking, they may spend some time in hanging in massage joints looking for cheap relief but that is about the height of it

Thai authorities think that big numbers translate to big revenue - well it doesn't, they have alienated the big spenders who are now going elsewhere - to places were they fell welcomed and treated properly

I agree with you 100%. I have lived in Thailand (Bangkok) going on 17 months now. I travel around SE Asia often and feel much more welcome in other countries than I do in Thailand. I talk to many Asian people in the surrounding counties and they don't seem very fond of Thailand and Thai people. And as always passing through Thai immigration at the airport coming and going, I still get looks of utter contempt and loathing from the IO's. So I always make it a point to smile and be polite speaking in Thai because I know for a fact it upsets them even more ????

  3. I was in Hua Hin a couple of months ago for 3 nights and it was very boring. At times during the day I had the beach to myself. I sat in the same bar 2 nights in a row and was the only customer all night long. I shot several free games of pool with the girls working there and were just as bored as I was.

  4. Let's not forget about the rasist attitude against foreigners. Senior discount for Thais only. This dual pricing for foreigners in any sector breeds nothing but utter contempt. If you stop and think about how much money people spend to come here for tourism and retirement along with foreign aid packages from western governments you will realise just how ungrateful these people really are. I have said it before and I will say it again. "The rest of the world doesn't need Thailand for anything".

What you really need to know....beware of impolite Chinese shovers,  and backpackers that don't take off their filthy backpacks, and people that stopped right in front of the doors or the escalator to continue their texts.

And the article is wrong because I read a book or other printed stuff on the train, and I see students doing it everyday..

I just keep walking and shove them out of the way. I even shoved one idiot and the two morons behind him back off the train that were trying to cram in during rush hour.

  6. They put everyone's life in danger in this is all the punishment that they receive? What a complete and utter disgrace to their country and their fellow countrymen. obviously one of the many many reasons why foreigners have little or no respect for Thailand and Thai people. unfortunately for the vast majority of Thai people that are good honest and decent human beings, they're the ones that are being hurt most of all.
