  1. I have a friend who works in Germany at airport customs, I can assure you that there is no exchange of sales data from duty free shops around the world (in germany).

On the other side it is not very likely to get home with your ciggis, 20 carton are not easy to hidecheesy.gif

Don't know how they handle it in the UK, but in Germany once you pass the green channel there is no going back. IE you have to pay the duty plus 100% for the fine, if 20 carton they even start tax criminal proceedings. You can not say " I leave the items here, you can keep it..".

If you use the red channel you can decide between pay or destroy it.

I know that customs in Germany now x-ray most of the luggage on the conveyor belt, they just take a quick look. If they see something they take the bag from the belt for a second screen. My friend told me cigarettes are very easy to recognize with that procedure.

  2. I doubt that you`ll find anywhere in Thailand a Döner made of ground beef. It is not easy to make such a Döner and in the past even in Germany and Switzerland with tight quality and hygiene controls the industry had scandals regarding the meat quality. The whole production process must be very clean and ice cold.

  3. Nothing special there. I paid once almost 60.000 Baht import duties in Schiphol on a my Rolex president, which I wore for many years already, but for which I didn't have receipt.

    The OP wrote:

Here's a nice little tidbit from one of my wife's friends who just traveled over to Thailand to visit her family.

IMHO if you bring your personal bag(s) stuff or whatever with you for a short visit you are not supposed to pay any duties for it.

On my last visit to Germany I had also some problems with customs, although I can only afford a Casio (model: parking attendant aspirant) cheesy.gif the unfriendly customs officer saw my notebook and phone. Both easy to recognize as not bought in the EU because of the keyboard of the notebook and firmware of the phone.

The last 5 years I was one time in Germany for 10 days, and he wanted me to charge for it blink.png They even looked for the prices on ebay.comthumbsup.gif

I had to pay a security deposit and became that money refunded when I flew back to Thailand... Waste of time!

  4. Got his number, time for him to go!!

Will powers that be do anything? Probably not.

I like to know what other members on Thaivisa would do if they have the choice to pay on the spot 100 Baht or drive to the next police station and pay 300 - 500 Baht.
I drive a lot in Thailand and if you ask me, I always choose the pay on the spot 66% discount solution. It saves money and time and points.
Would you prefer to pay at the police station the triple amount?

  5. To buy a Ford or Chevrolet in Thailand you must be very brave. There is a reason Ford and Chevrolet, among a few others, have a much higher depreciation.

I just sold my Toyota Vigo 3.0G AT. I had the car for 9 years and drove 180000km with it.

    Breakdown=0

    Tires changed at 90000km once

Break pads changed once at 100000km service

2 new batteries in 9 years

at 150000km new timing belt (standard service) and water pump, water pump was recommended by the mechanic more as a precaution.

Apart from that only regular service always at Toyota (not expensive)

Never did any service or cleaning to AC and is still blowing ice cold air.

The Vigo was the most reliable car I had in the last 25 years.

I think Ford makes very good looking cars, the Fiesta compared to the old Mazda 2 looks nicer. (I bought the Mazda five years ago)
The new Ranger is IMHO at the moment the best looking pickup in Thailand.

The Focus also looks very modern.

The new Everest coming this year is a real beauty. Ford sales people most of the time very friendly.

Only problem is service in case of a problem and if you have a problem the driving cheesy.gif

If I should need a rental pick up for a 1 day or a week and could decide between a Vigo and a Ranger I would always take the Ranger.

Little bit like the decision between a gogo girl and a farmers daughter. For a short period the gogo girl is nice to look at and makes fun to ride, for the long run the farmers daughter is bettercheesy.gif

The old Ranger (until 2012?) and Everest were tough cars but drove live tractors.

Next month we get a Nissan X-Trail - I really hope it is the same quality as the Toyota, but I doubt it...

  6. I agree with Swissie, the 90 day report is good for nothing.
The last three times I did the report the wanted nothing (i,e. zero, nada) to confirm my address. In the last 11 years I moved once and that was in a three km radius.

In the past they wanted some supporting documents, they usually accepted an electricity bill or internet invoice even if it is not on the name of the person which did the report.

So what they gain with that report? National security?

The good guys report the correct address every 90 days, the other group (Russian mafia, Al Qaeda, Terrorists and fugitives etc.) will not report the correct address, they are not that stupid.

So the whole 90 day report is only waste of time! It is as helpful to the security as a 99 THB styrofoam helmet on a Hayabusa.

On the other hand you can mail the silly slip to them and don't waste any of your time.

  7. Under the back seat of the Vigo is a small compartment with the kit, to find it is the easy part. Then you need to search the crank hole in the back and use the two part crank to turn it in a counter clockwise fashion to lower the tire.

It`s a Pita, first time I did it in the midday heat on the motorway.

I took me something like 45 min and I was pretty dirty afterwards.

Changing a tire on a sedan is a lot easier!

Since that time I have a small 12v compressor, whenever I have a small puncture I try to refill it first to get to the next tire shop for a repair...

  8. If you are around 20 years old forget Ban Chang!

The bar strip is something like 300m.

That is no place for a young men. Also avoid the Thai Karaoke places in Rayong.

Take a bus to Pattaya or register on thaifriendly or something like that.

If your appearance is daylight compatible you should have no problem to find someone your age who is able to communicate or more with you, without paying for it....

You can still visit the strip in Ban Chang in 30 years - if you are a bald, overweight, frustrated golf player that likes to pay a little bit more for his beer to have a very experienced person take care of the rusty old nuts...

Then you`ll perfectly blend in the clique...

  9. I have to agree with the OP. The roads, and infrastructure overall, in China are better. But it's not a place I'd want to live. I've got a few friends there and they say dealing with the internet is very difficult due to the Great Firewall.

But they have some absolutely beautiful roads. Complete with sidewalks no less! Corruption is still rampant in China. But I don't think on the same scale as here. Not sure about that, but it has puzzled me as to why their roads are better.

One thing I really hate there is the constant honking of horns. And the drivers are extremely aggressive. In Beijing over a 7 day holiday, I saw at least 2 people killed. I've never seen that in Bangkok. On guy was a cop directing traffic and they just left him laying there. Sick.

That is 100% true, Couple of month ago I saw a Video on liveleak WARNING !The video is not for the fainthearted ! It was in China in the offical TV news.

If you see video you get somewhat an idea of the road manners in China. Sick is a very polite way to describe it.

  10. Because i provide for My Thai Family choices. The Civic, is my choice and changes at 7.K in Auto with 200KPH easily met on E85 Fuel,..Plus i feel happy for Folks that can afford more than Me. Clearly You Dont. Some good came from this Post,i found out the Nissan has 4WD.biggrin.png

I have absolutely no problem with other opinions or any problem with other peoples choices. I do have a Vigo and a Mazda 2 and just ordered the new X-Trail. I still I think that the pick up is the best value for money in Thailand.

If someone reports he bought a Altis, Civic, Ranger, Camry, E-Class, S-Class I never ever criticized anyone here before in the way you do that all the time!

If I see a someone in a new S-Class or Bentley in Thailand I have no envy in a negative way. And you can be 101% sure that I don`t envy anybody in a Accord or Civic...

It`s just annoying each and every time someone mention the word "Fortuner" , "Pick up", "Ranger" or "Diesel" here, to read your comments... It reminds me of this guys:

Although you have been very modest by your standard in this thread.

  11. Well Mr Rayong i have .1 G.M Trailblazer 1 Nissan Calibre 4/4. 1 Accord and 1 Civic all under 2.5 Years old so thank you for your assumptions. No i dont like Diesel personally, they dont pull 8000 + rpm , so You got one bit right..biggrin.png

So since you dislike the diesel why you have bought the Trailblazer and the Navara`? Where is the difference between a Fortuner and the Trailblazer, apart from the rather non existent service from Chevrolet in case of a problem?

I also don`t think that any of your current cars is doing 8000rpm.

This is a new and modern diesel motor:

E350 Diesel 0-250km/h and it is not necessary to come near 8000 rpm because it makes 620nm/1600rpmcheesy.gif

It is just irrationational to repeat again and again that diesel are loud, slow clankers....

  12. Homework................whistling.gif .....................facepalm.gif .........................smile.png

You rascal, didn't do it eh..........rolleyes.gif

You're right, I didn't measure it first, but it will still fit. I don't think there's anything smaller in a pickup now anyway and I wasn't going to buy a sedan. Driving back from Rayong yesterday I hit a stretch of road that would have shaken my previous car (Jazz) to pieces.

Thats where we truck guys can smile all the way home........AND get there............laugh.png

Yep the Trucks O.K, its the passengers that get rattled to pieces. I got a lift home in a new D Max, no kid.sad.png , never again, ill get a Toyo Altis Taxi sod the 700Bht

We all know that you neither a big fan of pick ups or diesel in general.

Everyone is entitled to his own opinion.

I think a pick up is an excellent choice in Thailand if you not only drive around from Lat Prao to Bang Na and two times a year to Hua Hin.

The pick up is usually more durable and more forgiving regarding potholes etc. compared to a sedan.

Would I buy a pick up in Germany ? No for sure not, but I would buy a diesel? I don`t know when you last time drove a modern diesel car, but a lot of things changed from 1978 - W123 - 200D to 2014 - E300 BlueTec.

However, I have a solution to your "rattles to pieces"tongue.png problems, it is small and discreet to carry around in your pocket - just in case:

if you combine with one of these:

    cialis-generika.jpg

you even have a stick to hold on during the tough rides in the back of a pick up...cheesy.gif

  13. At least he had the foresight to ask them their nationality before he started fighting back.

Thailand.. your people really suck to continue this "blind" way of blaming others...

Didn`t you read the last sentence:

Thanks to members of the public nearby, one of the men, Mr. Khern aged 18, was apprehended. He later told Police that the other two men were Mr. Wine and Mr. Nes, who are currently being sought by Police.

  14. The Samsung AC (non inverter) is consistently on a on- off cycle. Difference with Samsung it starts immediately after turn on with 100% ( non inverter is 100% or 0) therefore delivers the first cold air faster then the inverter.

I believe the Daikin is programmed so on purpose, compressor starts slow to ensure sufficient lubrication before switched to 100%.

There is no aircon, inverter or non inverter, that has its compressor starting run at 100% immediately after turn on, as they all have a safety built in as the aircon can't know if it was previously switched off while compressor was running or not.

Yes that is correct, but I am not talking about the 20 seconds delay after turn on or power failure, I was talking about the time it takes a Daikin Inverter to reach 100%, the non inverter is not able to reduce the power, It's either running or not....

Because of that I think if you compare inverter with the "slow start" to non inverter ac that the first stream of cold air is delivered by the non inverter ac.

However, even my 5 years old Daikin does the slow start only if the unit is cold.

If, in case of a short power failure, the compressor needs to restart it takes only 20-30 second to reach the max. output again after reconnect.

So I am quite happy with the inverter mainly because it is not so loud.

  15. I also have 2 Daikin Inverter (13k & 24k) and for a guest room a very basic Samsung 9000 BTH.

Both Daikins start slow compared to the Samsung, if you stand next to the outside unit of the Daikin the fan of the compressor is running at maybe 50-60% for the first 2-4 minutes.

After the first minutes it accelerates to 100%. When the target temperature is reached the outside unit is slowed down again, it seldom turns off completely but is running really slow.

Reason for an inverter AC is to reduce the start stop cycles and better adapt to the required cooling capacity. If you have big windows without curtain you need a lot higher cooling capacity in the day. Good scenario for an inverter.

If the needed cooling power is more consistent, I believe the inverter is not so useful.

If your 12K BTU AC (inverter or not) is not able to cool down your 18sqm room below 27°C in the night it is not working properly.

    Very basic test:

Turn AC on, mode cooling or snowflake ;)
press the Turbo or Powerful button on the remote (bridges the temperature sensor)

go to the outside unit, compressor should be running and you should feel a warm air stream.

  16. This is nonsensical. So you have to sign up your girlfriend to the site, and then

her other sponsors have to sign her up too so you can see them ? What the

bleep are the odds of that ?? Instead, buy a iphone. Put in tracking software,

and then give it to her with a big smile. Problem solved....

This was also my immediate thought.

There are other ways to keep track too. A lot depends if she is a long term g/f.

Yet, if you met her in a bar, would you really expect her to go home and stay with her parents while you are away?

I explained one time to a bar girl about hidden tracking software in an iphone.

She was amazed as she had no idea. I laughingly told her to never ever accept

an iphone as a present from a farang, and if she did the trick was to take it to

a shop and do a complete reset on it....

Well it works with every smartphone and you don't have to buy the phone for her. You just install the software on her own phone that she is already using, then you can receive daily copy's of her SMS or Line dialog's, have access to her pictures saved on her phone, browser history, emails etc, you can open the mic or check the GPS coordinates. All you need is an active internet connection on her phone...

Same applies to PC or notebook.

However, I would not recommend that at all. If you have such a big distrust in your partner I think it is better to stay single or look for a new partner.

What these sponsors who come 1-3 times a year to Thailand expect?

That a 20-25 years old girl waits 6-11 month to have the next intercourse and if the sponsor arrives the "sexually disinterested nun" transforms in a sexy vamp that wants sex three times daily? Surecheesy.gif

Dream on and pay 0.30 cents a day if it makes you sleep better.clap2.gif

  17. Just a quick question.

Couple of years ago I had to fork out 2000 THB for reporting late on day no.9 (Chomtien), I also had to insist on a receipt.

    However my question is:

If you have a multiple reentry permit and forgot the 90 days report lets say for 2-3 weeks, can you leave Thailand on a land border without paying the fine or will immigration at the border address this issue?
