It is a nice place at least for a short visit. First time I was there only 10 years ago and was treated like a true alien, sometimes in a good and sometimes in a bad way. Now it is very touristy in comparison to those times, although nothing compared to much of Thailand.
I have to say Russia has played the information war very well as we can see from the many Western useful idiots and neutral observers palying into Putin's hand here as well.
Putin's Russia to me is the true evil empire, more than the Soviet Union of Reagan era. They leave nothing in their trail except death, poverty, misery and despair, all for strengthening the position of Tsar Vladimir.
Of course farang is offensive, same way as n-word is in the West. Back in the 80's in my country black people were still widely called n***s even in the media and still are by some older people but anyone should understand that the term is derogatory. Farang is in the same way a racist, dehumanizing and categorizing term.
Macgregor has been singing the same praises of Russia and Putin since day one and never backs down even when his predictions are a total miss. Of his motives I don't know if he is a paid agent by Kremlin or just another right wing nutcase.
Western countries, Japan and South Korea became developed countries by mass industrialisation. Thailand might not be able to repeat that in a post-modern world of robotics and AI. They would need to raise the general education level a lot and I can't see that happening so the most likely result is the middle income trap.
Probably financial reasons, For some from cold winter countries it may be climate. Most westerners in Thailand seem to be British and UK has high cost of living but low wages and pesions. Not to mention weather.
Mental health issues have increased significantly since the advent of smartphones. It is interesting that several tech company owners and executives have banned social media from their own children. There is enough academic research to suggest mobile devices pose a problem for developing brains.
At least China is trying to build connections with other countries. America is very hard trying to break them and isolate itself. Whatever one thinks of China in general, I think the former is a better strategy.
I agree that Trump and his lackeys are 'fighting for their own best interest'. Their own personal interests, not those of the nation and the common man.
