A Chinese businessman linked to a pub in Yannawa district of Bangkok raided by police on Tuesday night is listed as a donor of the ruling Palang Pracharath Party, Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin admitted on Thursday. Somsak, the chief strategist of Palang Pracharath, said the businessman, Chaiyanat Kornchayanant, donated as much as three million baht to the party last year. “His donation was made in accordance with the law,” he said but admitted that the party did not do background checks of its donors. “But I can assure you that there is no political favour in return,” he said of the donation by Chaiyanat. By Erich Parpart The Chinese government will continue to try and increase their control over Thai media, the founder of a Thai student publishing house which said that a Chinese businessman tried to buy them out told Thai Enquirer. “China has been influencing Thailand for a long time now and their attempt to try and buy our small publication made me think how many news agencies in Thailand have already been supported by China which is why they do not dare to speak about Chinese issues,” said Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, a pro-democracy activist and founder of the Sam Yan Press. “We thought about staying silence on the matter because it was risky but if we remain silence, people will not know about this attempt to control a Thai publication by China and the need for Thai press to be free from influences from abroad,” he said. The publication, which translated and published many books that were critical to Beijing’s human rights records include those of political dissidents in China such as Liu Xiobo and Ilham Tohti, said in a series of tweets and a statement that they were approached by an investigator from a private investigation company in Bangkok which has a Chinese client who wanted to offer the publication 2 million Baht for them to shut down. Police led by Police Major General Theeradet Thamsuthee raided an illegal nightclub premises on Charoen Rat Road on Wednesday morning. (Inset left) A white Rolls Royce was among 34 luxury cars seized. (Inset right). by Joseph O' Connor Police seized ฿1.3 million in cash from two safes while they failed to open four others at a completely unlicensed Chinese-run high-end nightlife complex in Sathorn which had a drug warehouse at the back, where sachets of drugs in different colours sold for between ฿10,000 to ฿25,000 each to over 200 nearly exclusively high-end Chinese customers, after Wednesday morning’s raid, which saw the local police chief transferred. A nationwide police crackdown on illegal drug distribution has shone a spotlight on illegal practices in the nightlife industry linked to Chinese nationals and the underworld where huge amounts of drugs and illicit money are moved across Thailand, particularly in Bangkok and Pattaya. In Bangkok, on Wednesday morning, following a raid on a completely illegal and off-the-radar high-end nightlife complex in Sathorn, the police chief of Yannawa Police Station was removed from his post while in Pattaya, a high-level task force led by ‘Big Joke’ has vowed to charge any officers colluding with the operators of the now closed Pattaya One nightclub in the city. That venue was shut down on Sunday morning and is believed to be linked to illegal drug funds and a Chinese kingpin owner. A senior police officer, the police chief of the Yannawa sub-district of Bangkok, was removed from his duties on Wednesday after a raid on three buildings situated on the Charoen Rat Road in the commercial Sathorn district of the capital, revealed an extraordinary illegal nightclub catering entirely to a well-heeled Chinese clientele where large quantities of expensive and illicit drugs were being consumed by wealthy punters. Pheu Thai Party’s Landslide Win ‘Very Unlikely’: Academic By Thai Newsroom Reporters IT WILL BE VERY UNLIKELY for the Pheu Thai Party to score a landslide victory in the next general election because the largest opposition camp will undeniably see the likes of the Move Forward Party contesting as their archrivals, according to a noted political scientist. Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat, left, and Paetongtarn “Oong-ing” Shinawatra, head of Pheu Thai Family, right. By Thai Newsroom Reporters IT WILL BE VERY UNLIKELY for the Pheu Thai Party to score a landslide victory in the next general election because the largest opposition camp will undeniably see the likes of the Move Forward Party contesting as their archrivals, according to a noted political scientist. Thanaporn Sriyakul, president of Kasetsart University’s Political Science Association, forecast that the Pheu Thai Party, “practically owned” by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, will find it very unlikely to get as many as 250 MPs or more in the next general election to meet his landslide target since their bases of support among constituents nationwide will be quantitatively shared by the Move Forward Party. Given common bases of popular support, especially among young voters in the 2019 general election, the Future Forward Party, earlier legally dissolved by court and practically renamed as the Move Forward Party, managed to get 80 MPs in their first-ever electoral campaigns, compared to 136 MPs secured by the Pheu Thai Party, resurrected from the dissolved People’s Power Party and Thai Rak Thai Party. The speculated tug of war over votes in both constituency-based and party-listed modes between the Pheu Thai Party and Move Forward Party will make it unlikely for the former to score landslide triumphs as had been the case in the 2011 general election which landed Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, the premiership only to be overthrown in the 2014 coup orchestrated by army chief-turned-premier Prayut Chan-o-cha, according to the Kasetsart academic.
