From November 15th, people who want to deposit cash via cash deposit machines (CDMs) in Thailand will be required to identify themselves by inserting their credit or debit cards and entering their Personal Identification Number (PIN) or password. The new measure has been introduced by the Anti-Money Laundering Office and will be applied to all commercial banks, to prevent the laundering of money earned from drug trafficking, illegal gambling or other criminal activity. According to AMLO, the alternative for those who do not have a credit or debit card PIN or password for their bank accounts is to deposit their money and show their ID cards tobank tellers in the branch, which will incur service charges. Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Somkid Jatusripitak by Joseph O' Connor On Monday, the Prime Minister’s Office welcomed last week’s report from the International Monetary Fund on the Thai economy which confirmed projected growth of 2.8% for this year and 4% for next year. This contrasted sharply with the fears expressed by former Economic Czar Somkid Jatusripitak who called on the government to cut back on key flagship infrastructure projects and to prepare a fund of ฿200 to ฿300 billion to assist the less well-off through the banking system in 2023 when an economic storm is expected. Former Government Economic Czar and Deputy Prime Minister, Somkid Jatusripitak, has called for the scrapping of plans to buy submarines from China and less emphasis on flagship infrastructure project spending going into 2023 in an effort to target badly needed financial support to the less well-off at a time of heightened inflation and rising interest rates. The former key adviser to Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha and Minister of Finance in the government of Thaksin Shinawatra is warning that the kingdom is facing an economic crisis in 2023 and that the government must have a fund of ฿200 to ฿300 billion available to help those in debt and the less well off survive the coming storm to preserve the kingdom’s economy and prevent further damage or even collapse. It comes as the Prime Minister’s Office, on Monday, in contrast, welcomed an International Monetary Fund projection that Thailand’s economy will grow by 2.8% in 2022 and 4% in 2023. Push To Dissolve Bhumjaithai Party Over Free-Marijuana Campaign By Thai Newsroom Reporters Top: Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Public Health Minister-cum-Bhumjaithai party leader Anutin Charnvirakul smelling a marijuana plant. Photo: Matichon Weekly THE BHUMJAITHAI PARTY is facing an unprecedented lawsuit involving their previous free-marijuana campaign which might possibly result in the dissolution of the second-largest coalition partner, said Pheu Thai party leader Chonlanan Srikaew today (Oct. 17). The Pheu Thai-led opposition bloc has resolved to file a lawsuit against the Bhumjaithai Party, headed by Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, early next month alleging that the coalition partner had illegally propagated the free use and household production of marijuana during their previous electoral campaign which had won overwhelming votes from some constituencies in the 2019 general election, according to Chonlanan. The Bhumjaithai Party, de facto led by former cabinet member Newin Chidchob, had reportedly pledged to legalise the consumption and household production of marijuana purportedly for medical reasons. The free-marijuana campaign had seen 39 constituency-based contestants and 12 party-listed candidates elected as MPs under the tickets of Newin’s camp which finally jumped onto the bandwagon of a Palang Pracharath-led coalition after the previous election.
