  2. File photo Exchange rates for a US dollar have hit 38.10 baht while the UK pound has recovered slightly to 42.7 baht. The pound had traded lower due to the strength of the greenback as well as market turmoil caused by a mini-budget in the UK that led to the sacking of the Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng on Friday. New chancellor Jeremy Hunt sought to calm market volatility with a swathe of measures reversing previous decisions. The pound was trading as high as mid 45 baht in January. In latest SuperRich rates available online the Euro was at 37.05, Aussie dollar at 23.65, Canadian $ at 27.45 and NZ $ at 21.2 baht. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-10-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 6. Picture: Thai Rath The owner of a flat in Thonburi was brutally assaulted by a gang of ten men with rifles or war weapons who attacked him at his residence on Friday night. The victim knew the assailants and even willingly opened the door to them. Shots were fired in warning and then he was pistol whipped causing injuries that required 60 stitches. Before the gang fled they collected the spent cartridges. The incident was followed by a post on the page of a famous lawyer calling for the Tha Kham police to get cracking and solve the crime. It happened at some electricity authority flats in Rama 2 Soi 6 in the Bang Khun Thian area of western Bangkok, reported Thai Rath. Chief of the local police Lertsak Khiamsap said that it concerned a conflict over a marijuana deal. The victim was arrested in the past by Region 9 metropolitan police for drugs and had assets seized. Police are waiting to interview the victim when he has sufficiently recovered but say they know the identity of the assailants. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-10-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 7. Drugs showdown in the works bound to prompt memories of decisive 2003 crackdown by Thaksin by Joseph O' Connor Last week the permanent secretary at the Ministry of the Interior Mr Suthipong Chulacharoen and the National Police Commissioner General Damrongsak Kittiprapat gave a press conference after a high-level meeting where a forthcoming drug crackdown was discussed The current campaign as well as being a response to Nong Bua Lamphu also comes after demands from other provinces around the country including Krabi where drug-related violence and killings have undermined local security and confidence in the rule of law as the country reaches a limit in its tolerance with huge quantities of methamphetamine linked drugs flowing into the kingdom from beyond Thailand’s borders in the Golden Triangle. 8. Last week the permanent secretary at the Ministry of the Interior Mr Suthipong Chulacharoen and the National Police Commissioner General Damrongsak Kittiprapat gave a press conference after a high-level meeting where a forthcoming drug crackdown was discussed by Joseph O' Connor The current campaign as well as being a response to Nong Bua Lamphu also comes after demands from other provinces around the country including Krabi where drug-related violence and killings have undermined local security and confidence in the rule of law as the country reaches a limit in its tolerance with huge quantities of methamphetamine linked drugs flowing into the kingdom from beyond Thailand’s borders in the Golden Triangle. On January 28th 2003, then Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra signed order 30-31/2546 setting up a co-ordination centre headed by then Deputy Prime Minister General Chawalit Yongchaiyudh which waged a ferocious three-month ‘war on drugs’ in a campaign during which tens of thousands were detained while thousands are thought to have lost their lives. It was an act that helped burnish the former PM’s popularity and reputation for getting things done by tackling problems head-on but one which also marred his period in office with difficult questions being asked to this day about human rights violations and abuses. Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha has told the National Police Commissioner General Damrongsak Kittiprapat that suppressing drugs was a key ‘national issue’ as security agencies and the Ministry of Public Health, in a campaign coordinated by the Ministry of the Interior, prepare to launch a national crackdown on drugs which, among other things, will see addicts taken into care on an area by area basis. The planned campaign, for which October 31st is the deadline for local intelligence, is bound to resurrect memories of the 2003 three-month onslaught pushed by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra that year in which thousands were detained and killed while hundreds of government officials and police officers were arrested and prosecuted for colluding with drug gangs. The current campaign is being seen as a response to the massacre of 36 people including 24 children on October 7th by a crazed former police officer with a history of drug problems. 12. A man was apprehended by Phatthalung provincial police yesterday (Sunday) after he shot at a shopkeeper, stole a police car and tried to escape with his 11-year-old daughter, before colliding with a roadside utility pole. The man’s wife told the police that her husband, 51-year-old Krirkphan, was in a drug rehabilitation program and his medication ran out two days ago, causing him to become paranoid and carry a handgun, forcing her to stay with a relative for her safety. The man was reported to have left home for a grocery in the Pa Phayom sub-district, carrying a handgun. He allegedly fired one shot in the shop, prompting the owner to fire back, injuring the man who then stole a police car, which was parked unattended in the area, in an attempt to flee the scene. 14. Sanook Thai Caption: So scared I'm selling my house Reporters from Sanook caught up with a 35 year old Thai man who is having problems with his ex girlfriend. Big problems. Two months ago Thanakorn, who lives alone, split up with her because he caught her talking to someone else. But she hasn't accepted the break-up and seemingly is intent on making Thanakorn's life a living misery. He went on the Facebook page of "Sai Mai Tong Rort" to appeal for help from public and police. He said that he'd been with her for one and a half years but since the split she has pestered all his friends, broken into his house and smashed things up and hired a delivery rider to monitor his movements. Once she arrived in a taxi at the estate to deceive security and trespassed his house. Picture: Sanook In a latest incident on Thursday of last week two hired men caused 30,000 baht of damage to a vehicle and windows at an uncle's house in Nonthaburi in the middle of the night. He's convinced it's all related. Things have got so bad that he has put his house in Sai Mai, northern Bangkok, on the market. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-10-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 16. The sixth edition of the Orchid Palm Homes Cup took place at True Arena last Thursday. Six Under 13 teams participated and Hua Hin City came out on top after winning a dramatic penalty shoot out against Taptai. During the group stages it rapidly became clear that Taptai and Hua Hin City were the two strongest teams. They both booked their spots in the semi final by winning two matches out of two to finish top of their respective groups. In the first semi final Taptai were matched with HH Academy and prevailed 1-0 after a well worked free kick routine which benefitted from a slight deflection. Hua Hin City capitalized on a couple of defensive errors to run out as 3-1 winners over Black Mountain in their game. The fifth and sixth playoff finished 1-1 and went to a penalty shoot out with Nong Hoi eventually beating Shark Boy. The third and fourth place playoff was settled in normal time with Black Mountain defeating HH Academy 1-0. The final was a tense affair with Taptai enjoying the lion’s share of possession but struggling to create any clear cut chances against well organized opponents. It meant the destination of the winner’s trophy would be decided by penalties and Hua Hin City emerged victorious, converting all but one of their spot kicks. Orchid Palm Homes owner Stephen Ayling was delighted to see so many different teams competing, “It is good to see everything getting back to normal again after Covid-19 and to see more teams entering these tournaments. With so many penalty shoot outs this year it seems like the games are getting even more competitive and the children seemed to really enjoy themselves.” Former England and Tottenham defender Gary Stevens, who is the head coach at Black Mountain, also enjoyed the day, “The facilities here at True Arena are fantastic and it is really good for the children to have an opportunity to play competitively on such a good surface. There were some really close games and everyone is looking forward to the next edition of this tournament.” --2022-10-17

They said that the woman was a public menace and was armed and dangerous. People related how they were attacked and their cars damaged after they refused to give her money. They claimed she was armed with a knife and would use lumps of wood and stones to attack vehicles if she got annoyed. People recounted her vile expletives and dangerous behavior calling for her relatives to get her into rehab. She had been involved in a bottle attack and a stabbing and took drugs, it was claimed. (Photo by Sergei SUPINSKY / AFP) Thailand’s decision to abstain from voting on a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution that rejected Russia’s annexation of four eastern regions in Ukraine, far from proving its neutrality, is actually counterproductive and severely dents its international credibility, many experts believe. A direct instruction went from the government in Bangkok to the Thai permanent representative at the UN Headquarters in New York to abstain from voting on the UNGA resolution on October 12 that called on all countries not to recognize Russian annexation of Ukrainian territory, a senior official at the Foreign Ministry said on condition of anonymity. “There is no other consideration behind the decision except to please Russia and President Vladimir Putin, who has been invited to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation [APEC] meeting in Bangkok next month,” he said. The UN resolution aimed to defend the principle of the UN Charter since the regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia are temporarily occupied by Russia as a result of aggression, violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence.
