VIP chauffeur punches security guard in parking dispute at Bangkok airport (video) by Petch Petpailin Photo via Channel 8 and Channel 7 A chauffeur for a VIP foreign passenger punched a security guard at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok yesterday following an argument over parking at the entrance to the passenger terminal. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1342867-vip-chauffeur-punches-security-guard-in-parking-dispute-at-bangkok-airport-video/ -
A chauffeur for a VIP foreign passenger punched a security guard at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok yesterday following an argument over parking at the entrance to the passenger terminal. The 47 year old security team leader, Sergeant Thanakrit, filed a complaint against the assailant, 41 year old Worravit, at the Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station after the incident, which occurred around 2.30pm yesterday, November 6. Thanakrit submitted CCTV footage of the assault to the police as evidence. In the CCTV footage, Worravit, dressed in an all-black suit, is seen punching Thanakrit in the face. Other nearby security guards rushed to intervene and restrained Worravit before taking him to the police station. The assault took place outside the second floor of the passenger terminal at Entrance Number 4. The road outside the terminal is always congested with vehicles picking up arriving passengers, who exit on the second floor. To maintain traffic flow, airport security guards are stationed in the area, allowing cars to park briefly to collect passengers. Thanakrit reported to the police that Worravit parked a black Toyota Alphard minivan outside the terminal at 8am that day. Worravit left and returned to the spot multiple times, waiting to pick up his passengers. Thanakrit explained that as more vehicles arrived, he asked Worravit to move his car to prevent a traffic jam. Worravit, inside the car, could not hear him, so Thanakrit shouted to get his attention, which may have angered Worravit, leading to the assault. A female security guard who witnessed the incident, Yasmin Musoh, insisted that Thanakrit did not use vulgar language with Worravit, though she admitted that he shouted at him. Yasmin added that shouting is common practice in the busy area, where engine noise and honking can drown out voices. Worravit claimed that Thanakrit used abusive language towards him and instigated the conflict by bumping into him. The VIP chauffeur added that he did not intend to use violence but punched Thanakrit only once. His account, however, contradicted the CCTV footage, which showed Worravit attempting to punch Thanakrit again even after other guards intervened. Police charged Worravit under Section 138 of the Criminal Code: assaulting or obstructing an officer on duty. The penalty is up to one year of imprisonment, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Channel 8 and Channel 7 Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-07

Efforts are underway in Patong to reorganise the city’s unscrupulous motorcycle taxi services following a recent conflict among drivers over passenger pickups. Local police in the bustling tourist destination are taking steps to address the situation, which has negatively impacted the area’s reputation. Chalermpong Saengdee, a member of the People’s Party representing Phuket, revealed that a meeting took place yesterday to streamline regulations for motorcycle taxi services in Patong. The gathering featured local officials and police focused on resolving disputes and reducing competition among drivers, which has been detrimental to the image of local tourism. During the meeting, a representative from the Phuket Provincial Transport Office outlined plans to regulate public transport. The introduction of a supervisory committee was proposed to tackle issues such as designating specific passenger pickup points. “All motorcycle taxi drivers must be registered and possess a public transport driver’s licence obtained through a training programme.” This initiative aims to prevent disputes and protect tourists from potential exploitation. Concerns have been raised by Teerapong Chuaychu, the chief of Kathu district, regarding the growing number of altercations among public transport drivers vying for customers. This behaviour, he noted, risks driving tourists away from the region, reported Bangkok Post. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-07

Picture courtesy: Siam Rath Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has requested an extension for submitting her asset and liability declaration to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), citing the need for a thorough review as the primary reason. The deadline, originally set for November 5, has placed time constraints on the Prime Minister, necessitating additional care in compiling the information. In her request to the NACC, Paetongtarn emphasised the importance of accuracy and diligence in the declaration process. Her family is reportedly assisting her in ensuring that all details are correctly documented and submitted in due course. The Prime Minister reassured the public and authorities that the necessary steps are being taken to meet the required transparency standards. However, when questioned about the transfer or sale of financial shares to her mother and sister, Thailand's Prime Minister was less forthcoming. She opted not to provide specific answers, instead indicating that her husband and sister were in charge of the legalities surrounding the shares and would divulge details at a later stage. The lack of clarity on the stock transfer issue has raised eyebrows among political commentators and the public. Concerns have been expressed about the implications of such financial manoeuvres and their alignment with transparency principles. Yet, the Prime Minister maintains her commitment to complying with the rules and regulations set forth by the NACC, aiming to complete the declaration with due diligence. The situation has sparked discussions about the transparency of leaders in managing personal and family assets while holding public office. Paetongtarn's request for an extension highlights the challenges faced by officials in balancing personal financial affairs alongside their public duties. As the deadline extension is reviewed, all eyes are on the upcoming detailed declaration and any additional insights it may bring about the Prime Minister's financial dealings, reported Pattaya Mail. -- 2024-11-07

Indian Tourist Scammed in Pattaya by Pakistani Herbal Remedy Sellers At 11:36 p.m. on 6 November, Mr. Mayur, a 34-year-old Indian national, reported to Pattaya Police Station, filing a complaint with Police Lieutenant Colonel Akkaraphong Sanputawong after realising he’d fallen victim to a scam by two Pakistani nationals. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1342847-indian-tourist-scammed-in-pattaya-by-pakistani-herbal-remedy-sellers/ -
At 11:36 p.m. on 6 November, Mr. Mayur, a 34-year-old Indian national, reported to Pattaya Police Station, filing a complaint with Police Lieutenant Colonel Akkaraphong Sanputawong after realising he’d fallen victim to a scam by two Pakistani nationals. The pair had approached him on Pattaya Second Road, offering to sell a miraculous herbal remedy mixed with honey, which they claimed could cure ailments within two weeks. After being persuaded by their excessive claims, Mr. Mayur ended up losing 20,000 baht. The scam reportedly began when Mr. Mayur was approached by the men, who commented on the birthmarks on his hands, claiming to know of a remedy that would guarantee a complete cure. Taken in by their sales pitch, he was led to the Durni Natural Herbal shop, where the herbal concoction was priced at 900 baht per gram, with honey, a supposed key ingredient, costing 1,000 baht per bottle. Despite initial hesitation, Mr. Mayur was pressured to make the purchase after being told the products could not be refunded. Later, while dining, another foreigner pointed out that he had been scammed, explaining that such incidents are common in Pattaya, where scammers - often involving Pakistani men in collaboration with local shop owners - target tourists with overpriced, falsely advertised herbal remedies. Realising the deception, Mr. Mayur promptly filed a report. Lieutenant Colonel Akkaraphong documented the complaint and coordinated with the local investigation team to probe the shop. There have been numerous similar reports in Pattaya, where other tourists have fallen prey to scams involving unauthorised and overpriced herbal products. Some victims have filed complaints, while others have returned home, accepting their losses. Despite periodic crackdowns by Pattaya’s police and health authorities, the scams persist, tarnishing the city’s reputation. The Pattaya Tourist Police, alongside Chonburi health officials, have conducted several raids targeting such operations, yet these fraudsters continue undeterred, exploiting tourists in search of cures and remedies. Authorities have pledged to intensify efforts to curb these scams, aiming to safeguard Pattaya’s image and protect tourists from further exploitation, reported Daily News. -- 2024-11-07

Picture courtesy: Thai Rath Social media erupted with criticism following claims that Japan was set to end its visa-free entry for Thai tourists. The Japanese Embassy in Thailand has since confirmed that these reports are false. On 6 November 2024, reports surfaced about a viral message on social media, suggesting that Japan would revoke its visa-free entry for Thai travellers for up to 15 days. This generated widespread speculation, especially as the end of the year marks a peak travel period. However, after checking with relevant authorities and reviewing popular Japanese tourism pages followed by many Thai citizens, there were no reports confirming such a policy change. The rumours had resurfaced after similar claims circulated earlier this year, alleging that some Thai tourists had overstayed their visas in Japan. Despite this, there was no official announcement to cancel the visa exemption for Thai nationals. In response to the recent surge of misinformation, the Japanese Embassy in Thailand issued a statement to Thai Rath Online, firmly refuting the claims. The embassy clarified that the reports were untrue and had caused widespread misunderstanding. They urged the public to rely on official updates from the embassy’s official social media pages to avoid confusion. The embassy's clarification has reassured Thai tourists, confirming that no changes to the visa policy are imminent. With travel between Thailand and Japan remaining popular, both nations continue to prioritise smooth relations for tourism and business exchanges, reported Thai Rath. -- 2024-11-07

ASEAN NOW image composite for reference only Tax expert Thomas Carden has advised expatriates residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in 2024 to obtain a tax identification number from the Thai Revenue Department (TRD). Addressing members of the Pattaya City Expat Club, Carden emphasised the need for expatriates to register and submit tax forms by the first quarter of 2025, even if they believe they owe no tax, writes Barry Kenyon for Pattaya Mail. Carden clarified that only overseas income transferred to Thailand is relevant for taxation. Issues like pre-taxed pensions and double taxation treaties should also be considered. He warned that failing to register could lead to audits and potential penalties in the future. “If you delay, the financial penalty screws can become tighter and tighter,” he noted. There has been some confusion at local revenue offices due to a lack of information from the TRD head office in Bangkok, making it challenging for expatriates to understand their obligations. Carden advised using professional tax services to navigate the system, as most pensioners on savings may owe little or nothing. Supporting bank or tax documents are unnecessary when submitting the forms. Reflecting on global trends, Carden mentioned that taxing foreign residents has become common worldwide, and it's essential to comply even if no income is remitted to Thailand. He reassured attendees that registration doesn't automatically mean payment is due. Discussing potential changes to Thailand’s tax system, Carden mentioned the speculative nature of shifting from a residence-based tax system to one that includes worldwide income, which would require parliamentary approval. He stressed that while personal income tax enforcement is imminent, it's vital to stay informed and proactive rather than ignore the situation, reported Pattaya Mail. The issue applies to Thais receiving income from overseas as well, highlighting its broad impact. -- 2024-11-07
