Come Saturday the 2014 coup leader – General Prayut Chan-o-cha would mark 1-month in ‘suspension’ and off duty after the Constitutional Court on August 24th ordered him suspended from active duty as Prime Minister although General Prayut continued to remain the defense minister. The orders from the Constitutional Court came after the opposition parties filed a petition to seek the court’s opinion on whether Gen. Prayut had breached the 8-year term limit on being the Prime Minister or not. The Crime Suppression Division (CSD) has seized more than 460 million baht in assets and cash in coordinated raids on 52 locations in 10 provinces suspected to be linked to a major online gambling network based in the north-eastern province of Khon Kaen. Over 40 suspects were also taken into police custody. Pol Col Wiwat Chitsophakul, superintendent of the 3rd subdivision of the CSD, said that the gang had opened three online gambling websites three years ago, with more than 50,000 gamblers using them. He said that the websites offered several types of gambling and those who used the service were required to transfer money into the gang’s bank accounts, which were linked to the websites. When money was transferred to these accounts, it would be quickly withdrawn and transferred to other accounts to conceal the money trail, he said, adding that the gang had a turnover of about two million baht a day. General Supot Malaniyom of the National Security Council confirmed that a meeting on Friday chaired by Acting Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan will hear proposals to cancel the Emergency Decree. by James Morris and Son Nguyen Move to scrap the Emergency Decree and the last of the entry criteria for incoming travellers is coming at a time when the full extent of the economic damage caused by it is becoming apparent while, at the same time, Thai consumers, appear to be in a confident, upbeat mood with sales of private cars in August up by a whopping 61.72% on the year before. Thailand is to cancel all requirements concerning the virus emergency from October 1st including those for incoming passengers as the kingdom gears up to abolish the Emergency Decree introduced at the end of March 2020. It comes with a growing realisation that lasting economic damage to the kingdom’s foreign tourism industry and the overall economy has resulted from the measure which will take at least another year just to see the country recover lost economic ground and at least another two years after that again before the kingdom has any chance of witnessing visitor numbers like that seen in 2019. Thailand has announced that it is scrapping the last requirements for passengers entering the country related to the COVID-19 virus as the government begins winding down the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) as part of a firm proposal to abolish the country’s Emergency Decree and all its structures.
