  8. Daily News Thai Caption: Offering alms to monks The act of giving alms to monks in the morning is deeply engrained in Thai culture. One must usually get up early to catch the saffron clad brigade as they do their morning rounds. But not anymore! Now a curry shop owner in Samut Prakan, south east of the Thai capital Bangkok, is offering an online service "live" on TikTok. This created a storm of opinion on social media - what Thais call a "drama. Netizens wanted to know if this was appropriate or not, reported Daily News. Their reporters caught up with Worapong, 45, who is the owner of the Hia Ko curry rice and alms shop in the Bang Khong market. He said people could transfer their payments to him and he'd do the alms giving for them with their name on the curry packets. Picture: Daily News Each one had some rice and a drink too for 60 baht. He'd been doing this for nine years but only recently went live. He denied that this was a shameless way to boost sales saying that he offered a valuable service to Thais living abroad and the bedridden. He was taking orders every day from 5.30 am to 7 pm should you wish to stay in bed and have someone else do the merit making. He sells about 60 sets every morning to people who can order while still in their beds. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-20 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. (Photo by Pornchai Kittiwongsakul/AFP) By Thai PBS World’s Political Desk Khunying Potjaman Damapong’s rare appearance at a Pheu Thai Party rally on September 10 was viewed as symbolic for a woman believed to be the party’s de-facto chief. Her ex-husband, deposed former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, denied there was any special significance to her presence, saying Potjaman was simply there to offer their youngest daughter Paetongtarn moral support as she addressed the Chiang Mai crowd. Potjaman is known to be among Pheu Thai’s most powerful figures despite holding no executive post in the main opposition party. But she has kept a low profile since Thaksin’s Thai Rak Thai Party was dissolved by court order 15 years ago. Occupying a role behind the scenes, she has occasionally been spotted meeting with key party figures. Late last year, a senior Pheu Thai figure even suggested to Thaksin that Potjaman should become party leader. But he rejected the idea, claiming his ex-wife had “no interest in politics”. 20. Picture: Thai Rath Lots of jokes are made about Thai buffaloes but the prized ones can fetch huge sums. This was in evidence yesterday when Noppon Athijakrawuth, 43, the owner of a buffalo farm in Nakhon Pathom in the central region paid a million baht to Nattachai Khumkhana, 44, who owns a farm in Chanthaburi on the eastern seaboard. The money was placed on a golden "phan" rather in the manner of a dowry creating many laughs. Nattachai told Thai Rath that his fancy buffalo farm was the first of its kind in Chanthaburi and was built to raise awareness about Thai buffaloes and their care and breeding. Many buffalo fanciers from all over the country were at the ceremony to hand over the 11 month old male beast. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-20 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 22. Daily News Thai Caption: Five arrested for abduction of 16 year old Region 1 police working with the Pak Kret constabulary announced the arrest of five people allegedly involved in the abduction and beating of a 16 year old. They all denied the brazen attack that left the boy on the verge of death by the side of the road in Nonthaburi. They were arrested at a house in Bangkok, reported Daily News. The boy had opened a bank account for a gang then had used the money himself. It amounted to 340,000 baht. Police have been dusting for prints on two vehicles, a Fortuner and a Mazda that were used in the abduction. Deputy Region 1 chief Pol Maj-gen Pheerapong Wongsaman said that police were investigating what Fluke - the boy - was doing with the account. People who open accounts for mafia style gangs to use in money laundering often do not know what is going on but some do know. Investigations continue with four more people being sought including someone who discharged a weapon at the scene and a woman who was also involved. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-20 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 24. By Erich Parpart The Election Commission (EC) must provide a more detailed guidelines of what political parties can do or cannot do during the 180 days period before the next general election as senior members of the government were already exploiting loopholes to promote coalition parties, a deputy leader of an opposition party said. “I understand that the government has to help the people, but they cannot use loopholes for their own benefits by saying that this or that party has been doing such and such and they will come back to do it again if they were reelected,” said Nattawut Buaprathum, a list-MP and deputy leader of the Move Forward Party told reporters. The 2017 constitution stipulates that potential Member of Parliament (MP) need to report all their spending on advertising or any other issues they spend money to avoid been seen as ‘buying’ votes from voters. This rule goes into effect 180 days before the house dissolves – March 23, 2023.
