  1. Picture: Thai Rath The authorities in Thailand are continuing to press for Thai drivers to stop at Zebra crossings. The issue came to a head in February when a policeman drove his Ducati into a doctor crossing the road killing her. "Mor Kratai" - doctor Kratai - became a rallying call for change. Yesterday the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and many other agencies including backing from the Interior Ministry met to promote the proper use of Zebra crossings to help protect children and young people. The backdrop to the meeting said: "Stop the damage - Stop your vehicle - Let people Cross". Drivers ignoring the law are a common feature in Thailand, especially at Zebra crossings. Yet the police do very little to enforce the law. Many activities and events are being planned to get motorists to stop, reported Thai Rath. Many crossings have been upgraded and the Thai media has banged the drum for months over the issue. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-21 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. TNR staff A THAI medical expert said in a Facebook post today (Sept. 21) that blood tests previously carried out indicate that around 60-70% of the population have been infected with Covid-19, particularly the dominant Omicron subvariant, Matichon newspaper said. Dr. Yong Phuworawan, the head of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, said Covid infection is still widespread in the country and it is not possible to work out the real tally of patients with or without symptoms with the daily reported cases being lower than the actual total. This is so because many patients either have few symptoms or are asymptomatic particularly after the Omicron subvariant took hold. Sanook Thai Caption: "Karma dirt track" (a play on the misery caused by past bad deeds and dirt tracks) Sanook reported from Umphang district in Tak, NW Thailand where heavy rains from the latest monsoon storms have turned some routes into horrendous experiences for drivers. This is especially true for teachers and ambulance drivers who have to get through what are deep dirt tracks gouged into the earth. In one stretch that is just 60 kilometers long it takes six hours to get through. Picture: Sanook Narong, a teacher, said he was delivering exam papers and only a four wheel drive could make it. Apart from that you'd have to have a dirt bike. Forget cars. Asked if he was tired he said "very" but at least he felt appreciated. Parts of Kanchanaburi in the west and Mae Hong Son in the far north west were also named by the media as suffering from very heavy rain in the monsoon season. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-21 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 13. The Orchid Palm Homes Cup VI is set for True Arena on October 13th. There will be six Under 13 teams participating in the one day tournament. Now in its third year the Orchid Palm Homes Cup is the longest running children’s football tournament in Hua Hin. The biannual event gives academies from Hua Hin an opportunity to get a taste of competitive football in a fun and friendly atmosphere. The Orchid Palm Homes Cup V took place in April with Black Mountain running out as winners of the Under 10 tournament. The second event of the year will feature slightly older players with Black Mountain, Hua Hin City, PSG, Shark Boy, Nong Hoi and Baan Tap Tai all signed up to participate in the Under 13 event. Orchid Palm Homes owner Stephen Ayling is proud to be supporting youth football in Hua Hin, “We are proud to be supporting this tournament for a third year. It is great to see the children getting outside and getting away from their computers and phones to participate in a proper sporting event.” Paul King, the manager at True Arena, says this is just part of his ambitious plans to start putting on regular youth football leagues and tournaments in Hua Hin, “We are in the middle of our first ‘True Arena J-League’ mini-season on Sunday mornings for local Under 10s teams, so it’s great to add in a U13 tournament for the older kids to get some competitive game-time at our world class facilities. We’re committed to making True Arena a hub for youth football tournaments in the region and I am excited to see another six teams from the local area going head to head next month.” Among the coaches in attendance will be former England international Gary Stevens. The UEFA Cup winner will be coaching the Black Mountain Under 13s and is looking forwards to being back on the touchline again after a long break, “I have been to all the five Orchid Palm Homes tournaments and they are always a fun day for the children, parents and coaches. Getting to play competitively is very important for the development of young players and I’m looking forward to seeing how the players in this age group have progressed since the last Orchid Palm Homes tournament they played in.” For more information visit www.huahinfootball.com.

Thousands face jail in Thailand for repeat DUI offences Daily News Thai Caption: Repeat DUI offenders face jail Daily News reported that new legislation in Thailand will see the courts definitely jail offenders for repeat drink driving offences. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1272484-thousands-face-jail-in-thailand-for-repeat-dui-offences/
  15. Daily News Thai Caption: Repeat DUI offenders face jail Daily News reported that new legislation in Thailand will see the courts definitely jail offenders for repeat drink driving offences. They said that the old slogan familiar to Thais was "DUI - face arrest and probation". Now it was "DUI - do it again and go to jail". The media - well known for its campaigns to raise awareness about the appalling carnage on the Thai roads - said that the pandemic saw a few less accidents but now things were back to the grim normal. Picture: Daily News MoPH figures for fatalities in the first half of this year showed 8,624 deaths or 13.22 per 100,000 people. That's 1,437 a month. It was just over 300 down on the previous year. Motorcyclists made up 82.72% of the fatalities. Then it was people in cars 9.81%, small trucks and vans 4.49% and pedestrians 2.98%. The age group most affected by fatality on the roads were 15-24 year olds. DUI continues to be one of the biggest reasons for death. New legislation means that a first offence will warrant a possible prison term of up to a year with a fine of 5-20,000 baht. Picture: Daily News Most offenders, however, get off with probation and a fine. But from now on repeat offenders will face two years in jail and fines of 50-100,000 baht. The courts will jail people for sure if they offend again. Offenders will face worse punishment (up about 30%) if they drive drunk while suspended or have no licence and the courts will be able to impose 50% more punishment in the event of causing injury or death. Up to 2018 there were 41,510 people on probation for DUI offences. Repeat offenders in the next three years were: 2019: 1,294 2020: 1,039 2021*: 589 (*This was stated as 2020 also in the story, ASEAN NOW suggests it was a typo). Under the new laws these thousands of repeat offenders would face jail "for sure" from the courts, said Daily News who added that in addition to jail you'll lose "your job and your future". -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-21 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
