  4. OPINION US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decided to stopover in Taiwan, which China viewed as a violation of its “One China” policy. It was an act of selfishness, one that grew out of her own desire to leave a legacy. Eventually, her action will bring all kinds of intended and unintended consequences. The intended consequence of her visit was clear for all to see. She knows that her time as the house speaker is ending this year. The mid-term elections in November are almost certain to result in defeat for the Democrats, according to American political pundits. So, it is better to do it now than later. Otherwise, her visit would not be as “special”. The unintended consequence is potentially enormous, because it will impact relations between the US and China in the months and years to come. First of all, the credibility of President Joe Biden has been ruined. In his marathon phone call recently, he pledged to Xi that the US respects the One China policy. He also said that the US does not support an independent Taiwan. 12. AMARIN Thai Caption: Child, 3, accidentally eats marijuana brownie Amarin TV reported that a three year old child who consumed a marijuana brownie needed hospital treatment. A teacher had contacted the parent to say that the child was shaking and couldn't walk properly. The child has now recovered. The family live in Pattani in the far south of Thailand and posted about what happened on Facebook. The teacher said that the child had fallen asleep and couldn't be woken up. The child was sleepy on the way to hospital after the parent decided to take the child there. The parent was told by a relative of her husband that the child had ate the ganja brownie. The child complained in hospital of being hungry and sleepy. The mother warned other parents to be careful of their kids. She refused to talk to Amarin citing negativity towards her family. The media made do with speaking to a baker in the area who said they would't put ganja in their brownies because it wasn't Halal. The baker said people in the area were putting ganja in their food secretly and this was a very bad thing especially for children. A young person told them that smoking weed was fine but consuming it in cookies and the like was difficult to gauge the strength and thus this was particularly dangerous to children who might consume such products. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-04 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 22. Daily News Thai Cap: Driver full of lust! Daily News went to investigate after a Thai woman went on Pattaya Talk 2020 to say she was molested in the front seat of a taxi she called using a well known app. "A", 20, had been on a night out with her elder sister and elder brother when they called the yellow and blue taxi to go home to Soi Porn Praphanimit in Bang Lamung. She said that the driver spoke nicely on the way and seemed to have a good temperament. The name of the driver was displayed on the app. At one point he produced a knife from the side pocket that he said he used "for self protection". Picture: Daily News When the group neared home they stopped at a 7-Eleven and her siblings got out but she was tired so stayed in the taxi. Suddenly the driver kissed her on the cheek, she tried to remain calm but he persisted in trying to chat her up asking for her telephone and LINE numbers. She kept the encounter to herself but back home was in tears with her sister prompting her brother to go outside and confront the driver who had just made a U-turn before trying leaving the area. He wound the window down and the brother, aged 22, hit him in a fit of rage after seeing his sister's distress. The family later made a report with the Bang Lamung police. The lady warned women to call taxis driven by women or at the least sit in the back of cabs. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-04 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 24. By Thai PBS World’s Political Desk Questions over whether Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha can legally remain in office after August 24 have resurfaced as the date approaches. On that date, Gen Prayut will have been in the post for eight years, the legal limit set by the Constitution. What the Constitution says Unlike all previous editions, the current Thai charter stipulates a time limit for the PM’s tenure. Article 158 states that: “The prime minister shall not hold office for more than eight years in total, whether or not consecutively. However, this shall not include the period during which the prime minister carries out duties after vacating the office.” When to start counting? Many observers, including Prayut’s critics, insist the eight-year period started when he first assumed the premiership on August 24, 2014 – following the military coup he led in May that year.
