  5. Big Joke hails his chief's crime strategy - Smart Safety Zone 4.0 "inspires public to respect RTP" Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported that top cop Lt-Gen Surachate Hakpan was in Betong, southern Thailand, yesterday to evaluate the effectiveness of the RTP chief's much vaunted Smart Safety Zone 4.0 crime reporting and prevention system. 6. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported that top cop Lt-Gen Surachate Hakpan was in Betong, southern Thailand, yesterday to evaluate the effectiveness of the RTP chief's much vaunted Smart Safety Zone 4.0 crime reporting and prevention system. The RTP think it is the best thing since sliced bread inspiring Thais to respect their force though the public are skeptical, even if they have heard of it. Surachate - known universally as Big Joke - was slapping top brass in the area on the back after the Betong station was named number one for the scheme's implementation. S.S.Z. 4.0 - is the baby of RTP chief Pol Gen Suwat Changyodsuk and part of a 20 year strategy to address crime and get the public to respect the police again. Suwat recognised that this has waned over the years and that the key was local, community policing that the public could get behind. The system is basically CCTV linked to local command centers. The public can press a button to report crime on special reporting posts. Critics have said unkindly that this just wakes up the cops who are snoozing at the station or otherwise engaged in extortion. But the RTP say it is innovative and has already won an international award for community policing projects in Dubai at a police conference. A pilot scheme was deemed successful - by the RTP - who said that polls are carried out monthly and is now being rolled out in Stage 2. Siam Rath's article was full of rhetoric and praise and completely devoid of any serious journalism in asking awkward questions, notes ASEAN NOW. Few people outside the media have heard of the scheme and fewer still think it has made any difference to crime or the relationship the police have with the Thai public. That has always been love/hate tinged with suspicion and skepticism with many Thais accepting that their police are little more than an organised state mafia. Suwat perhaps mindful as to how his force is perceived believes his Smart baby can change that and improve the public's perception. Big Joke is in charge of this PR and tours the country promoting his chief's initiative. Big Joke, former deputy commander of the tourist police and head of immigration, was sensationally sacked several years ago and demoted to the PM's office. His rehabilitation under Suwat includes promoting the safety zone as well as handling human trafficking cases and illegal fishing. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Academics from Naresuan University, in Phitsanulok province, northern Thailand, began testing sewage at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport in May, adopting a technique that has also been used to track the spread of Covid-19. Monitoring wastewater is thought to be a quicker, more cost-effective way to understand the spread of the monkeypox, compared with testing individuals. 10. Daily News Thai Caption: Blackmail victim killed himself Crime Suppression Division police announced the arrest of a Facebook predator extorting money by blackmailing people over sex clips online. Khamdee was arrested at a house in Don Jik, Ubon Rathcathani after police obtained a search warrant. Five phones and evidence of 1,000 sex video clips were found, reported Daily News. The case began when a former mayor of an area in Petchabun province was found dead in a garage next to a house in Sri Thep district. There was a rope attached to a beam and the body of Suphon was on the ground. Picture: Daily News Relatives of the politician doubted he had killed himself and told police he had no feud with anyone and was not stressed - or so they thought. In addition his phone was missing. This was later found by police in a nearby pond. The CSD, brought in by local cops to help with the case, determined it was indeed suicide. They discovered that Khamdee, a homosexual man who liked to pose online as a woman and who had previously been involved in online extortion was behind the crime. This came after it was discovered that the former mayor had made cash transfers to his account. Picture: Daily News Khamdee had befriended the mayor on Facebook pretending to be a woman. A clip of the victim masturbating was used to extort money from him. When the victim stopped sending money that was demanded Khamdee contacted twenty of the victim's friends and relatives on Facebook with the clip. Then the victim killed himself. Three civil servants were among the ten victims found in the evidence on Khamdee's phones. He was charged with embezzlement, extortion and computer crime. Police warned the public not to share sex clips online as they can be used for blackmail purposes by unscrupulous individuals. In this case Khamdee went so far as to hack victims' accounts to find clips. He would then contact the victims to say he had discovered something on Twitter and could arrange with tech experts to have it removed. But it would cost money. He then set up a fake Facebook account of a tech expert to complete the ruse and had been extracting money from people for three years. In the last three months alone 460,000 had gone into his account in this manner. The mayor lost 200,000 baht over two years before he took his life. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 12. Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported that Wang Thong Lang police in Bangkok arrested three Chinese men who had earlier abducted and robbed a Chinese businessman in the Thai capital. They were named as He Junhui, 37, Jinyong Zheng, 36 and Heng Yaofeng, aged 35. They were about to board QR 837 bound for Qatar at 2.30 am yesterday. A Richard Mille watch valued at about 25 million baht and the keys to a Mercedes Benz were found in He's pants pocket. The suspects were taken to Wang Thong Lang police station in downtown Bangkok for interrogation. Earlier on Wednesday at about 2.30 pm police had received a call that Yang Hua, 31, had been abducted from the car park of VN Mansion Executive Residence in Soi 13, Rama 9 road. He is a Chinese businessman with Vanuatu nationality. He had arrived at the residence several hours earlier to visit his girlfriend. When he tried to leave in his Mercedes Benz he was accosted by several men who bundled him into a Toyota Fortuner. The girlfriend heard the commotion. CCTV was studied and a cap was found at the scene. Later at 8pm Yang and his girlfriend went to Wang Thong Lang police. Yang told investigators that the men who abducted him were not known to him. They tried to extort money from him but he was unable to transfer it because he had lost his phone in the scuffle. So they took his 25 million baht Richard Mille watch and his car keys. Picture: Thai Rath He had been driven in the Fortuner out to Bang Bua Thong in Nonthaburi where he was later released. He took a taxi back to Huay Khwang where he went to a friend's shop for help. Sources suggested that Yang had lent money to an associate who was involved in ordering his abduction. The Fortuner was rented and found abandoned near the airport in Rom Klao. The watch recovered from the men at the airport had the same serial number as Yang's timepiece. The interrogation of the suspects continued yesterday afternoon. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
