Good Samaritan or part of the problem? Thai woman has been feeding stray dogs and cats for 10 years Thai media Naew Na reported on a Thai woman in Nakhon Sri Thammarat in southern Thailand who has been feeding stray dogs and cats out of her own money for ten years. Thai media Naew Na reported on a Thai woman in Nakhon Sri Thammarat in southern Thailand who has been feeding stray dogs and cats out of her own money for ten years. They said she was being praised for being "Jai Bun" - a word Thais reserve for the especially generous and kind. Their reporters went to Pho Sadet sub-district and discovered that the woman took the animals to the vet if they were involved in car accidents and sometimes even paid for them to be spayed. She cares for 30 creatures and goes out in all weathers every single day. Her name is Lamyai Kawpetch, aged 50. She's a seamstress who works at home. She has three grown up children who help her husband in a design and decorating business. They have enough money so she is able to spend all her own income on the strays. That's about 300 baht a day. She buys 15-20 kilos of chicken bones a time. Not everyone agrees with people like this, notes ASEAN NOW, with many thinking it encourages strays and exacerbates problems. Naew Na made no mention of this concentrating instead on her kind hearted nature according to Buddhist mores instead. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai abortions: stigma, ignorance, and arbitrary rules cause policy to fall short in practice By Mailee Osten-Tan When two blue lines appeared on a pregnancy test in April 2021, K* knew that she and her partner were not ready for a baby and that she was entitled to a choice. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1265889-thai-abortions-stigma-ignorance-and-arbitrary-rules-cause-policy-to-fall-short-in-practice/ -
By Mailee Osten-Tan When two blue lines appeared on a pregnancy test in April 2021, K* knew that she and her partner were not ready for a baby and that she was entitled to a choice. But in a consultation room at Sakon Nakhon Hospital, the university student recalls how a nurse pushed the ultrasound probe so hard into her abdomen it hurt. She says the doctor berated her decision to abort, complaining that women like her faced a lack of consequences for their actions, before threatening to tell her professors. His words reduced her to tears. “Then, on my way out, the nurse turned to me and said, ‘You’re just afraid of getting fat and ruining your figure, aren’t you?’” says K. “Even when I think about it now, my voice starts to shake.” Abortion within 12 weeks of gestation might have been legalised with little fanfare in late-January 2021, but terminating a pregnancy in this Buddhist-majority country is still taboo. Many believe in karma and that those who choose to undergo abortions – including those who help them – are committing an immoral sin. But for pro-choice activists like Supecha Baotip, the Thai medical community’s resistance is a symptom of a much larger problem. “Imagine that anti-abortion attitudes are like a tent,” she says, “There are many poles that hold up a tent, but the tallest pole is the government in the middle. If you take out the middle pole, the others will lose stability too. By not vocally standing by the abortion law, the government continues to imply that abortion is not right.” Full story: https://www.thaienquirer.com/41708/thai-abortions-stigma-ignorance-and-arbitrary-rules-cause-policy-to-fall-short-in-practice/ -- © Copyright Thai Enquirer 2022-07-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Bang Yai police were informed of the fire and went with Bang Len and Bang Bua Thong fire services to Bang Len Soi 7 near the temple of Wat Suan Kaew. The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes. Only machinery being stored there was destroyed. Picture: 77kaoded Kran Phonrak, 63, a throat cancer sufferer who was unable to speak and Reuan Changkawian, 57, were in a state of shock but safe. She said she'd been out and on her return she saw sparks. She yelled for her husband to get out. The fire quickly took hold. Kran was more worried about a pet cat that could not be found. He was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene given his poor health. A short circuit was likely the cause. The local authority are taking care of accommodation for the stricken couple. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported on a story that harked back to the dark days of the pandemic when there were no beds for Covid patients. In their report they said it was happening all over again. The husband of a woman aged 36 named only as "A" said that his wife had an underlying lung infection and had had Covid for four days. She had had difficulty breathing and he had taken her to several hospitals but all Covid wards were full and he couldn't get her admitted. So he turned to the community help organisation in northern Bangkok called "Sai Mai Tong Rort" run by Ekkaphop Leuangprasert who helped by contacing a local rescue organistaion. However, they too failed to get the woman into hospital instead providing medication and an oxygen bottle to help her breathing in the meantime. If things got worse they would return and have her admitted as an emergency case. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Chuwit follows up: Dirty Chinese investment of 100s of millions - laundering money in Thailand, RTP turning blind eye Daily News Thai Caption: 100s of million (baht) paid? Daily News Thai Caption: 100s of million (baht) paid? Firebrand former politician and soapy massage boss Chuwit Kamolwisit followed up on his claims about alleged illegal "grey money" from dodgy Chinese investors coming into Thailand. He said hundreds of millions of baht in dirty money was being laundered in pubs, bars and casinos. Thais were not benefitting at all. At least not ordinary Thais; it was inferred in the Daily News story that it might be the Royal Thai Police who get a little something. Despite assertions from a met deputy that nothing illegal is going on. Yesterday we reported cryptic comments made by Chuwit on Facebook. ASEAN NOW's suggestions about what they referred to were right on the money, not that it was too difficult to work out. Yesterday at a press conference at The Davis hotel in Sukhumvit Soi 24 Chuwit regaled the press with pen and paper citing "MR David, Chinese investment, grey business". He said he had no intention to seek fame but that what was going on was OTT. The police said there was no drugs involved but Chuwit said that the people believe his "evidence" not theirs and that Thais should not be happy with this kind of investment in Thailand. It was dirty money from China laundering 400-500 million baht in casinos, pubs and bars. He referred to "David's" business, the casino in "Building A", that would likely be open again soon. This appeared to reference a face saving raid in Rachada Soi 18 a few weeks ago. No one of note was arrested, just a few hapless gamblers, notes ASEAN NOW. He said that even the drinks came from China and all the punters were Chinese. There was no Thai investment at all and Thais were not benefitting. He asked for a proper investigation into the source of the money and the nominee. He has claimed that "David" is behaving like a Thai when he isn't one. He intimated that he has further information. Daily News said that metropolitan police deputy Maj-Gen Jirasan Kaewsaeng-ek had earlier said that Sutthisan police had fully investigated a pub on Rachada Phisek at the Huay Khwang intersection. They found no drugs, all the licences in perfect order and it was closing right on time. Yesterday Chuwit said it closed at 4 am and 50% of the clientele would test "purple" for drugs if the police did their job properly. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Mother and daughter nearly drown at Khon Kaen Airport: "misunderstanding" after plastic cones blew away Picture: Thai Rath Authorities at Khon Kaen International Airport were scurrying to explain after a mother and her daughter nearly drowned when they went to pick up a relative. Picture: Thai Rath Authorities at Khon Kaen International Airport were scurrying to explain after a mother and her daughter nearly drowned when they went to pick up a relative. This followed a post on a Facebook page called "Prajan Lai Kratai". Some lightweight plastic cones had been put in place on a road leading to a car park not yet in service. Picture: Thai Rath But a heavy rainstorm had blown the cones away and the woman thought she could proceed. Her car was almost completely submerged in the deluge and they had to be rescued from potentially drowning. Thai Rath reporters went to the airport and found heavier obstacles now in place to prevent a repeat of the near tragedy. Picture: Thai Rath Security guards said the incident happened on the 9th of July. This was confirmed in an airport Facebook post that reported the mother misunderstood that the car park was in use because the cones had blown away in "unusually heavy rain and water runoff to a low lying area". They said that quick action by their staff saved the day. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Pity the kids - this is what some are getting for lunch for 21 baht - is someone creaming off the top? Picture: Sanook Sanook reported after a well known site revealed the meager portion and lack of quality of a school lunch. It was supposed to cost 21 baht - the media said "pity the children". The page that translates as "So you wanna be famous..." showed the lunch from a kindergarten in Prachuap Khiri Khan, the province on the way to the south and called for an investigation. They wanted to know if those offering the lunch were creaming money off the top. Several sections on the lunch tray - that were supposed to contain fruit and a sweet so that the children got a semblance of balance in their diet - were just empty. In recent years there have been many such stories with the Thai public convinced that school directors are appropriating budgets and educational authorities turn a blind eye to the corruption, notes ASEAN NOW. The post suggested the media step up and look into the matter. Not surprisingly in defamation rampant Thailand the school was not identified, -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
