by Paul Rujopakarn YALA (NNT) - Thailand has been praised as a positive example of a multicultural society by delegates from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Delegates from the OIC, led by Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Yousef Mohammed S.Aldobeay, traveled to the southern provinces of Thailand at the invitation of the Thai government from June 29-30, 2022. The delegates visited the provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat and observed local communities, education programs and religious activities. The assistant secretary-general commended the Thai government for looking after the Muslim community in the southern provinces and addressing disputes in a peaceful manner. The OIC delegates also affirmed that Thailand set a positive example for a multicultural society where everyone can live together regardless of race, ethnicity, nationalities and religion. Rear Adm Somkiat Pholprayoon, secretary-general of Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC), said the visit by the OIC delegates represented a good opportunity for local communities in provinces to express their views. He noted to the OIC that Thailand prioritizes multiculturalism and equality as one of the main policies set by Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, and that the OIC visit directly reflects those commitments to the international community. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-07-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai justice minister praises narcotics law change: LESS yaba around but more marijuana; don't take it abroad Picture: Thai Rath Comments made by Thailand's justice minister Somsak Thepsuthin yesterday and reported by Thai Rath indicated that the minister was delighted with the change in the law to remove marijuana from the Class 5 narcotics list on June 9th. Picture: Thai Rath Comments made by Thailand's justice minister Somsak Thepsuthin yesterday and reported by Thai Rath indicated that the minister was delighted with the change in the law to remove marijuana from the Class 5 narcotics list on June 9th. The minister quoted figures that suggested there were 100,000 less drug suspects compared to last year. He said the overall narcotics picture was significantly improved due to the new law. Even methamphetamine mixed with caffeine - what Thais call yaba - cases were down with 550 million pills seized last year and only 342 million this year. Marijuana was more prevalent with 43,714 kilos last year and 50,622 this year. The Narcotics Control Board has indicated that more is coming in from neighboring countries. Somsak warned about inappropriate marijuana use especially amoung youth and advised his compatriots not to take the drug out of the country where laws are not liberal like Thailand and where stiff penalties are still in place. ASEAN NOW notes that this report was very poor from Thai Rath. The precise timeframes for the minister's assertions were unclear with reporters perhaps not questioning the minister more fully to get to the finer details. It appeared more as an example of praising government policy without grinding down into specifics, we suggest. However, the overall tenet of praise from the government was the tone, albeit coming from one of their own. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-04 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Daily News Thai Caption: Drama! The word "drama" is in the news again in Thailand after a picture showed four children at an event holding marijuana leaf dolls. Behind them smiling in pink was the Thai health minister and chief of the Bhumjaithai political party Anutin Charnvirakul. The drama was intensified by the fact that they were not only young children but the law has now changed regarding the showing of images of this nature, notes ASEAN NOW. Daily News reported that Ministry of Public Health spokesman Dr Runreuang Kijphati said the picture was taken 3 years ago and was taken at a promotional event for medical cannabis at Government House when the www.medcannabis.go.th site was launched at a small event. The children were at another event nearby promoting helmet use on motorcycles and Thai press who were present at the time wanted them to add cuteness to the photo so they were drafted in. Now it was made to look as though the photo had just been taken since Thailand legalized marijuana last month, added the spokesman. The MoPH stressed there was no way that children or youth would be used to promote marijuana and apologized for the confusion. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-04 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
