Insets: Yala, Sai Mai, Nakhon Nayok | Main Caption: Knicker thief Daily News reported on the arrest of a serial thief who stole mobile phones dressed only in his underwear. Details of the various cases connected to 23 year old Khamas from Narithiwas were revealed on the personal Facebook page of a policeman involved in his arrest, Pol Maj-Gen Theeradech Thammasuthee, reported Daily News. In the latest of several thefts from the mobile phone retailer Banana, a total of 1.9 million baht's worth of goods comprising 128 items went missing from a store in Nakhon Nayok, central Thailand. Khamas admitted to robbing three Banana stores in his Y-fronts. He said it suited him and he was confident in his abilities. He would case the joints for 3-6 hours before dressing down for the thefts. In addition he admitted to liking bananas and the color yellow. He said that in his thefts he would only sell some phones to make money for himself. Others he would give away to poor people who didn't have phones. He likened himself to Robin Hood, stealing from the rich to give to the poor. This came about because when he was a kid he didn't have a phone of his own and felt deprived. Nine cases throughout Thailand are part of the charges against the underwear phone thief. A raid of his rented room in Ladprao uncovered 31 phones and another 58 were found in a rented hotel room in Ramkhamhaeng Soi 40. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Sanook Thai Caption: "You don't have to eat here" It is said that good business practice is to assume - or even pretend - that "the customer is always right". People in Thailand often note that in the kingdom the customer is usually made to feel in the wrong. Complainers are threatened with being countersued for defamation if they dare to name and shame. A case in point has just emerged on the Buffet Lovers page on Facebook. Some disgruntled diners complained to the management of a Shabu shop in a mall in Rathanathibet, Nonthaburi, reported Sanook. They found an army of small cockroaches in not just the shabu pot but actually in the sauce for their food. But when they complained instead of a sincere apology, even a discount or free meal they were allegedly told: "You don't have to eat here". -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Thai Rath Few people in Thailand don't believe in spirits or the afterlife so it comes as no surprise that a Facebook post about ghosts and spirits is being well received. The driver of a rescue ambulance in the north west of Thailand went on Facebook with a post about nine rules for the spirit world that he has put on the back of his vehicle. Spirits are warned not to annoy the living, not lean out of the ambulance or travel on the roof, don't mess with younger spirits and especially don't put the driver or staff off their duties. They were also told to get off at destinations and #9 always try to give the correct three numbers for the lottery. Picture: Thai Rath Pang Sila Thong 02 rescue driver Surin Pheungtham said that the job he does was stressful enough and the nine rules were designed to bring some light relief to an often miserable job, reported Thai Rath. Baht’s current slide is a grim reminder of its crash 25 years ago By Thai PBS World’s Business Desk The severe fallout from the pandemic and the sudden collapse of the tourism industry — which accounts for about 20 percent of Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) — has weakened the baht, pushing it to a five-year low. The severe fallout from the pandemic and the sudden collapse of the tourism industry — which accounts for about 20 percent of Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) — has weakened the baht, pushing it to a five-year low. (Photo by Kiratikorn Naksompop Blauw) By Thai PBS World’s Business Desk On July 1, at some point during the day, the baht fell to 35.66 to the dollar, its weakest in five years. It closed at 35.63 at the end of the trading session on the first day of this month, according to Kasikorn Research Center. The many swings of the baht Since the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the baht has gone through four key cycles. To follow the bailout conditions set by the International Monetary Fund, Thailand, languishing in one of the worst economic crises in its history, on July 2, 1997, abandoned its fixed exchange rate policy of pegging the baht at 25 to a US dollar, as the central bank’s reserves were drained defending the currency against speculators. Once the Bank of Thailand (BOT) opted for the floating rate, the currency experienced a free fall. The baht plunged to a historic low of 56.50 per dollar on January 12, 1998. This, however, enabled an export recovery and tourist influx, which in turn swung the baht’s fortunes around. Later the baht became very strong, and was even dubbed “super baht”, as a booming tourism industry brought in about 40 million tourists annually before the COVID pandemic struck the country in early 2020. In the middle of 2019, the baht had strengthened to 27-28 against the dollar. (Photo by Manan Vatsyayana / AFP) By Thai PBS World’s General Desk Although Thailand shifted into post-pandemic mode on July 1, thousands of people are still catching COVID-19 each day. However, as most people are vaccinated, the number of patients who suffer severe illness or death has remained relatively low. Thai PBS World offers some guidelines on what to do if you test positive for the new coronavirus. If you have mild or no symptoms, do not rush to the nearest hospital for treatment. Medical treatment for COVID-19 patients is no longer free at all hospitals. Since the post-pandemic mode kicked off, patients with mild cases of COVID-19 are being treated like those suffering from a common cold.
