Picture: Thai Rath Thai justice minister Somsak Thepsuthin has turned to the ubiquitous motorcyclists on Thailand's roads for help in a final push to win the so-called war on drugs in the country. But he has warned hands off on cannabis - that's legal or at least a grey area. Somsak is mobilizing a potential 200,000 strong two wheel army in Thailand made up of "wins" (motorcycle taxi riders) and "riders" (motorcycle delivery guys). Bangkok alone is thought to have 81,970 'wins' and 100,000 'riders' but the authorities realise that unregistered people would add to those numbers. Nationwide the figure is thought to be 200,000 plus, reported Thai Rath. The idea is that such motorcyclists would be the "eyes and ears" on the ground when drug deals go down in the suburbs. File photo Somsak said that riders shouldn't think that by busting a small dealer the 5% due to them would be small. It may lead to the arrest of bigger players. And a chance for five percent of the 10.3 billion baht seized by the Justice Ministry in drug cases in the last year. (A sum that exceeded JM targets by 300 million). In all those cases informants among the public are due 500 million baht, he said. He hoped that with the motorcyclists on board he could take the war on drugs to every village and housing estate and win the day. But he warned people not to call 1386 about weed. Though there are some grey areas and it is still debatable whether the drug will be on the narcotics list again in the future, for now the drug is legal. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-16 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Thai Rath The central criminal court has handed down the death sentence to a woman known as "Mae Puk" in the media. Natthiwan was given seven other aliases by the court as they considered charges under human trafficking legislation for assault causing death, attempted murder and fraud. The court heard how Natthiwan had taken over the care of a 4 year old girl from the mother. Then starting in 2015 she started feeding the child floor cleaner to make her pitiable and sick. The child developed severe intestinal problems, high blood pressure and was coughing blood. She was taken into hospital as the foster mother went on Facebook to get donations for her "sick child", reported Thai Rath. Worse was yet to come. Between September 2017 and May 2020 she started feeding floor cleaner to her own two year old son. Donations to help him came from other plaintiffs in the shocking case. The judgment decided that despite help given to the police the charges were of sufficient severity to justify the death penalty in the death of the first child. She was also given a life sentence for the attempted murder of her son and ordered to return just over 40,000 baht to people who gave her money. Her sentence was topped up by a further 30 years by the fraud charges related to begging for money under false pretences. Thailand is one of 54 nations around the world that has the death penalty on the books and sporadically uses it, notes ASEAN NOW. The last time it was used was in June 2018 (using the lethal injection method) and there are thought to be around 500 prisoners in Thailand on death row. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-16 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Thai Rath Police in Nonthaburi north west of the Thai capital Bangkok were investigating the death of a M3 pupil at a school in Bang Bua Thong. The boy was aged 13 and after initial suspicions that the death was caused by a computer malfunction it has now been determined that he was shot. Thai Rath quoted bang Bua Thong police chief pol Col Prit Jamroonsat as saying that the gun was brought into school by a pupil. It is not sure yet whether the shooting was accidental or deliberate. The evidence so far was pointing to an accident. Parents, social services, prosecutors and police were all involved in the interrogation of 11 witnesses last night. Four are expected to face charges including the person who brought the gun in, someone who moved it and two others. Other Thai media suggested the gun was a so-called pen-gun, a much less powerful weapon than a regular gun but one which can kill nonetheless. Elsewhere the school was named as Lat Pla Duk with the victim being a 15 year old boy called Noppsail who suffered a deep, long fracture to his left eyebrow. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-16 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Siam Rath Thailand's drug authorities have successfully intercepted a parcel that contained the powerful and potentially dangerous pharmaceutical drug fentanyl. This drug - prescribed by doctor's for severe pain associated with cancer care - is abused with other drugs like heroin, morphine, cocaine and crystal meth to produced a great high. This can be dangerous if overdosed as has been seen in many cases in the US and Europe. Siam Rath reported comments from the secretary of the Narcotics Control Board Wanchai Chaimongkhol who appeared with far east DEA rep Mark Snyder at a press conference. Wanchai said that the Airport Interdiction Task Force - AITF - had intercepted and xrayed a parcel from the US that contained 8 grams of ketamine, 9 grams of crystal meth, 2 grams of ecstasy, 10 grams of cocaine and four grams of fentanyl. Picture: Siam Rath A US man who came to pick up the parcel was arrested. In follow up investigations in the Ratchathewi and Wattana areas of Bangkok a Thai woman was also taken into custody. The drugs were found on Monday. Investigators are looking into the case to see if it was one of personal use or part of a wider drug related issue. Wanchai said this was the first time fentanyl had been found and the NCB were keeping a close watch on what he said was a potentially dangerous drug coming into the kingdom. Fentanyl comes in pill or patch form and online information suggests it has 50-100 times the power of morphine. Misuse can cause heart failure and death. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-16 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. By Narudon Daisachulshu As Thai Baht heads towards level not seen since late September 2006 questions are being asked whether the Bank of Thailand (BoT)’s statement that the 1.35 trillion Baht disappearance of the international reserves was just ‘revaluation’ of asset or has the central bank been actively propping the currency to keep it artificially stronger than it should be. Earlier this week, the BoT revealed that Thailand’s reserves stood at a staggering US$240 billion, but this number was down from US$278 billion seen earlier this year and that the reason for the decline in the currency was that the BoT was revaluing all the assets because most of the assets it holds are in its diversified portfolio had depreciated as the US Dollar has strengthened against all global currencies. The rising interest rates in the United States has prompted the US Dollar to strengthen to levels not seen in more than a decade, and this has prompted many countries to scramble to keep their currencies from depreciating. PHOTO: Manager Online By Nop Meechukhun Bangkok – Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul criticized three political parties for not prioritizing the lives of the Thai people after voting disapproval of the Cannabis and Hemp Draft Bill on Wednesday, September 14th. The Minister stated on Thursday, September 14th, that the voting disapproval from Pheu Thai, Democrat, and Phalang Pracharath parties was intended to delay the implementation which might not be in the time for this current parliament that ends in March 2023. He also responded to Democrat MP Sathit Wongnongtoey’s allegation of the lax law that sections in the draft bill were added to 90 sections from 45 sections, so it was impossible to be considered loose. By Thai Newsroom Reporters AN URGENT MOTION to hold a public referendum on the amendment of the whole constitution yesterday (Sept. 15) passed an initial approval in the House of Representatives albeit with less than half the total number of MPs. Only 215 MPs voted in support of the motion jointly proposed by Move Forward Party and Pheu Thai Party for the government to conduct the public referendum on whether most people nationwide may prefer to see the comprehensive amendment to the coup junta-designed constitution which has been largely seen as practically undemocratic, utterly complicated and contentious. However, such motions need yea votes from no less than half the total of MPs, accounting for 239, to pass into law in accordance with parliamentary meeting rules. Minutes before the legislators cast their vote, the House meeting was found to have 242 MPs attending, thus barely over half the total number. by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - Newer subvariants of COVID-19 continue to emerge as BA.5 remains the predominant strain in Thailand. Health authorities said the general public should not worry about the new subvariants, as they do not seem to be more virulent or transmissible than their predecessors. The Department of Medical Sciences (DMSC) has provided an update on the current COVID-19 variant monitoring in Thailand, with 9 cases caused by BA.2.75 and its sub-lineages detected in Thailand so far. Dr. Supakit Sirilak, Director General of the DMSC, said the department has identified the variants from 359 samples in the last week, from which 5 cases were found to be caused by the BA.2.75 subvariant, while the majority or 333 cases belonged to the BA.4 and BA.5 group. The DMSC chief said additional mutations are found in the new sub-lineages of BA.2.75, such as BA.2.75.2. Further monitoring is still needed to determine whether these new mutations affect the transmissibility or severity of the disease. Health authorities in Thailand have detected and reported the cases of BA.2.75.1, BA.2.75.2, and BA.2.75.3, which are offsprings of the BA.2.75 subvariant, to the GISAID database. Most patients developed mild symptoms, and have been discharged from the hospital. Dr. Supakit said the department has been working collectively with scientists around the world to monitor the virus to focus on any signs of concerns. He reassured the general public that the department is capable of detecting new changes in the virus, asking them not to panic over information posted on social media. Picture: Thai Rath Police in Khon Kaen are so worried about the menace from drugs like Ya Ba that they are arming the population. They have started a project that translates as One Prod Per Sub-District. These are prods and poles designed to subdue people high on amphetamines or booze who are creating a public nuisance. Picture: Thai Rath The police were on hand to train 180 participants in how to do their job...before they arrive on the scene that is. Thai Rath called it new tech but it seemed low tech but effective according to locals who gave the thumbs up to the initiative. Picture: Thai Rath People noted that there has been an explosion in drug and mental health related cases meaning that kamnans and phu yai ban (local leaders) are often left with no recourse but to take matters into their own hands before the RTP can turn up. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath published lots of pictures of farmers forlornly pointing at what is loosely referred to as their road. It's a mass of tire tracks and rivulets and they can't get their produce through to market. Some one hundred complainants from five villages across two sub-districts gathered to tell the media their version of road rage. Picture: Siam Rath Phajon, 59, said they were fed up with it all. Many locals turned out to do the activity favored at such protests - a bit of pointing as they demanded that the relevant authorities get repairing. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai Rath reported on the aftermath of an accident in Nonthaburi on the Bang Kruay - Sai Noi Road in which a 12 year old boy was hit by a motorcyclist while using a Zebra Crossing. Both are in a grievous condition in hospital and have been unable to give evidence as yet. The boy is in Phra Nang Klao Hospital with a brain hemorrhage, fractured collarbone and damage to his central nervous system. The biker Theerin, 25, has severe facial injuries in Bang Bua Thong Hospital. The boy's mother Orn, 39, spoke of problems for insurance for her son. The hospital told her because it was an accident she needs to front up money first despite the fact she has the universal health coverage (bat thong). Her son is a M1 pupil at Bang Bua Thong School. Police said they are waiting on reports of the severity of the injuries and the recovery of the motorcyclist and the pedestrian before proceeding in the matter. A resident at the scene said they need a pedestrian overpass; there have been many accidents there and drivers rarely stop at the Zebra. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. By Editor The most frequently asked question at the Be Well Medical Center is about Covid-19 vaccination boosts; to boost or not to boost. Should we get them? When? Which one? Dr Paemika Pidchayathanakorn, family doctor and partner at the Be Well Medical Center Dr. Paemika, general practitioner and family doctor, has some answers to these questions; her opinion follows. Dr Paemika Pidchayathanakorn, family doctor and partner at the Be Well Medical Center After consulting with colleagues in various countries, I must conclude that expert opinions and government directives on this matter globally differ; however, some conclusions are shared by many. Vaccinations have been crucial in containing Covid-19. Researchers are to be complimented for the speed in developing effective vaccines. While the immunization effect of the vaccines provides only limited protection for contracting and spreading of the virus, the real gain is that the risk of serious illness or death is significantly reduced; up to 10 times lower compared to unvaccinated persons as studies have shown. While all World Health Organization (WHO) approved vaccines have proven to be effective, many studies across multiple populations have shown that mRNA vaccines (e.g. Pfizer, Moderna) create a higher level of efficacy than vector vaccines (e.g. Astra, Sinovac). Consequently, many governments (including Thailand) and health professionals have suggested prioritizing mRNA vaccines, despite the higher costs. However, there are also studies showing good results of people using combinations of mRNA and vector jabs. Immunity wears off and the speed at which this decline takes place depends on the virus, the vaccine, and the person. It occurs quicker in older individuals. As Covid-19 and all of its future mutations are likely to stay around for a long time, there is a need to keep the immunization level at an optimum level. That is where boosters come in. The science is still developing, but for now, it seems that 6 months after the last inoculation a booster is due. This holds true first of all for the elderly population and for those with multiple underlying health conditions. Hence my advice to high-risk persons is to get a booster after six months. But also for anyone else wishing to reduce the chance of serious illness, including pregnant women (as recently recommended by The Royal Thai College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists), regular booster shots are to be considered. As far as children is concerned, we closely follow the government’s latest directions. The Royal College of Paediatricians of Thailand announced this week it will issue guidelines recommending mRNA- Covid-19 vaccine be given to children aged six months to five years. We now await confirmation of the Ministry of Public Health if this recommendation will be implemented. The U.S. FDA determined COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective for kids 6 months and older. Surely many of you heard about the new shots from Pfizer and Moderna which are bivalent, meaning that they target both the original Covid strain and omicron’s BA.5 subvariant. These new vaccines, which are expected to show higher effectiveness, are already approved in other countries, including the EU, and we trust they will soon become available in Thailand as well. For some people this may be a reason to wait for the (next) booster, but I recommend high-risk persons not to delay and use the currently available vaccines. Billions of vaccinations have shown that the risks are greatly outweighed by the benefits. In case you have hesitations or questions about COVID vaccines, boosters, or side effects I propose that you consult your doctor. At the time of writing, boosters are available free of charge at both Hua Hin Hospital and the Hua Hin Red Cross. Prawit Wongsuwon viewed an exhibit on the world’s longest petrified wood specimen. The specimen was discovered in the area that will soon become Doi Soi Malai-Mai Klai Pen Hin National Park in Tak province. At 69.7 meters, it is the longest petrified wood specimen in the world, as certified by Guiness World Records (GWR). The environment ministry and the Geological Society of Thailand held a ceremony to acknowledge the new world record on July 8. The agencies now aim to elevate the petrified wood site to a world-class geological tourism destination. On this occasion, Gen. Prawit inquired about the discovery of the specimen and the process involved in wood petrification. He also urged everybody to help conserve this geological heritage site and treat it as a national treasure. Doing so would keep the site intact so the public and Thailand’s youths can keep learning from it. The previous world record for petrified wood belonged to a specimen discovered in Xinjiang, China. That specimen is a 38-meter-long piece of petrified wood. Thailand’s specimen is almost 70 meters long and has been certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s longest piece of petrified wood.
