  2. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath went to investigate after a woman went online to say that tiny white worms - a bit like tapeworms - were crawling out of the pores in her skin. Phin, 27, from Ban Wang Phra-ong in Ban Dung said the little critters were so small that you'd hardly notice them. She said she is a rubber worker and had collected mushrooms to eat from a grassy area. This had created itching that was torture for her. She solved this by tiger balm and frequent showers - then came the worms. She thought they were probably some kind of insect. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe She hoped that doctors would be able to suggest the cause and the treatment. Siam Rath didn't make any effort to find out so ASEAN NOW Googled the condition. We came up with a variety of culprits including guinea worm, hookworms and sandworm. But the most likely candidate appears to be pinworms that can crawl out of the anus and lay their eggs in human skin. Maybe an ASEAN NOW resident doctor or dermatologist can enlighten us further. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. (Photo by various sources / AFP) The Lao PDR has come a long way, from a land-locked nation to a land-linked hub. Since last December, with a high-speed train linking Southern China to Vientiane up and running, the potential of its future economic development has become unfathomable. Since last December, with a high-speed train linking Southern China to Vientiane up and running, the potential of its future economic development has become unfathomable. With rail networks connecting to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia planned, the Lao PDR will have direct “sea-link” access to key regional port facilities, broadening the country’s trade and investment opportunities. Overall, the strengthening of the 70-year-old Thai-Lao relations will also promote national and regional resilience and improve the wellbeing of 60 million people living in lower riparian countries in the Mekong sub-region, not to mention the 656 million population of the ASEAN Community. 6. Picture: Sanook It is a common warning that most Thais are aware of - whatever you do don't mix durian with alcohol. Some think it's an old wives' tale but a top university doctor has confirmed it is true. Sanook reported on a series of posts on TikTok about a woman who went into shock and had to be taken by ambulance to hospital. In a video she was semi-conscious, with her eyes rolling in her head and her boyfriend blowing in her mouth in a desperate attempt to keep her awake. She had had three segments of what is known as the King of Fruits and was into her second beer when she started feeling hot with chest pains. She described difficulty breathing as if there was someting stuck in her throat. "Don't believe those who boast about drinking beer with durian," she warned. She has recovered now and posted that she had eaten the durian three hours before the beer and "forgot herself". Meanwhile Sanook reported that a military man in Lampang had died in similar circumstances at the beginning of May prompting Dr Jetsada Denduangboriphan, a scientist at Chulalongkorn University to say: "Don't eat Durian with beer - it's true". Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe He had expressed his condolences and then explained the science behind it. Due to the makeup of otherwise safe substances in durian they can react with alcohol to produce acetaldehyde. Enzymes then react further with this to produce acetate that aids in the body's production of carbon dioxide. Normally the body has mechanisms to deal with harmful parts of alcoholic beverages but the consumption of durian inhibits this. You have been warned. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
