  1. As the premier showcase of Thai tourism, the event once again brings together decision-makers at the same location with the goal of promoting Thailand and actualise business values. Phuket – Thailand’s leading B2B travel industry show, the Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) 2022, opens today on the beautiful island of Phuket until Friday, 10 June, with a focus on the country’s change towards stronger and more sustainable, more responsible tourism growth in line with the ‘Visit Thailand Year 2022 – 2023: Amazing New Chapters’ marketing campaign. Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said, “Thailand is celebrating its full opening for tourism with entry requirements further eased from 1 June, 2022. As such, this year’s edition of the TTM+ presents an excellent opportunity for buyers and sellers to come together and build on existing business relationships and forge new ones. Throughout the three days, TAT together with Thai tourism businesses are ready to showcase the ‘Amazing New Chapters’ in Thai tourism to inspire travellers from around the world to visit Thailand.” First held in 2001, and took place mostly in Bangkok each year since its launch, the TTM+ was relocated to Chiang Mai in 2016 – 17, Pattaya in 2018 – 19, and then Phuket in 2022 as part of the TAT’s strategy to promote provincial destinations. This year’s edition of the TTM+ has attracted a total of 275 buyers from 42 countries and 264 sellers from across four regions of Thailand. In addition, around 90 domestic and international media are also attending the event. The TTM+ 2022 has been conceptualised to showcase travel products, services, and experiences that promote Thai cultural values in the ‘from A to Z Amazing Thailand has it all’ concept. And, in corresponding with the TAT’s ‘smart tourism’ strategy aimed at elevating Thai tourism’s competitiveness, the event will also highlight the unprecedented digital transformation that now plays a pivotal role in accelerating Thailand’s tourism ecosystem to quality and sustainability. The event started today with eventful activities, including registration, pre-tours buyers and media, opening ceremony, TTM Talk, Thailand Product Update, speed-dating onsite appointments, and welcome reception. The half-day pre-tours featured three customised routes that highlighted Phuket’s natural and cultural charms. The ‘Eco Adventure and Fishery’ route toured local farming of pearls, fish, lobster, and sea grapes, while ‘The Last Rice Field of Phuket’ itinerary took participants to experience organic farming and buffalo conservation, and ‘The Moken’s Life’ programme presented Urak Lawoi’s ways of life and faith of Phuket. The event will be officially opened in the afternoon with welcome remarks by H.E. Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, followed by a TTM Talk under the theme of “Global Tourism: Shapeshifting to the New Chapter” by three keynote speakers. Ms. Rahimah Abdulrahim, Director of Public Policy for Southeast Asia, Meta, will present the first session on the topic of ‘Metaverse Possibility of Tourism Industry and Beyond’, Ms. Mich Goh, Head of Public Policy, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and India, Airbnb, will address the topic of ‘Driving Inclusive Tourism Recovery in Thailand with Airbnb’ in the second session, and Mr. David Boehm, Co-founder and Chairman, Miskawaan Health Group on the topic of ‘the Future Trends of Health and Wellness Tourism’. Buyers and media will then be given a brief on the Thailand Product Update by Mr. Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing and Communications, ahead of a speed-dating onsite appointment session for buyers and sellers. The Welcome Reception will conclude the eventful first day with the ‘Amazing New Chapters’ show, further reiterating the Royal Thai Government’s policy to promote the kingdom’s soft-power foundations, including Food, Film, Fashion, Fight, and Festival. Phuket’s gastronomy delights will prominently be highlighted throughout the evening, along with contemporary and futuristic shows. The two full days of buyer/seller appointments are scheduled on Thursday, 9 June and Friday, 10 June, along with a networking lunch on both days, and a networking dinner on Thursday hosted by the Phuket Tourist Association. Throughout the three days, the TTM+ 2022 is also showcasing unique tourism-related products from five selected businesses; namely, Tlejourn Shoes – recycled shoes made of ocean debris, Souvenir from the Sea – recycled bags and totes made of trash, Clothear – Thai batik clothing, Nara by Natipong – accessories made of Nora beads, and Sudjai Silver – niello ware. DIY workshops are available at the Tlejourn Shoes and Souvenir from the Sea booths. In addition, there are cooking stations showing how to cook local Phuket desserts. Post tours for buyers and media will take place Saturday, 11 June, with three routings that are tailor-made to showcase the scenic beauty, welcoming charm, and famous tropical island atmosphere of Phuket, Krabi, Phang-nga, Ko Samui, and Ko Pha-ngan, as well as the cultural and gastronomy delights of Bangkok. The TTM+ 2022 is being held at the spectacular venue of the Angsana Laguna Phuket beachfront resort set within the world-renowned integrated resort of the Laguna Phuket. The event has been arranged in accordance with the health and safety measures stipulated by the Ministry of Public Health to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and all participants are asked to kindly abide by these measures at all times. 5. By Enquistock A recent study by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) suggests that Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) could be lowered and mobile phone users could end up paying up to 20 to 244% more for their service if the telecoms sector becomes a duopoly. The study, conducted by the NBTC’s subcommittee that is responsible for gauging the economic impact of a potential merger between telecom giants TRUE and DTAC, presented the findings at its third public hearing. The potential merger was first announced in November 2021. The NBTC recently hosted a focus group meeting at its facility to discuss the merger agreement between True Corporation Plc (TRUE) and Total Access Communication Plc (DTAC) and during the meeting, Supachai Supachalasai, an economic analyst on the NBTC committee, said the committee found several potential out comes of a TRUE-DTAC merger by looking at two key areas. 6. Crazy queues just to check in at Suvarnabhumi last week OPINION | by Michael Bridge File photo Thai airways informed passengers in a press release that a Temporary Change of Check-in Rows at Suvarnabhumi Airport would begin on May 21st. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1262178-crazy-queues-just-to-check-in-at-suvarnabhumi-last-week/
  7. File photo OPINION | by Michael Bridge Thai airways informed passengers in a press release that a Temporary Change of Check-in Rows at Suvarnabhumi Airport would begin on May 21st. This was apparently due to the installation of a real-time passenger tracking and counting system by the Airport of Thailand. Passengers were asked to reconfirm the check-in row of their flight at the flight information display system located on the fourth floor of the departure hall. The result which went viral on Facebook was a massive five hundred metre line of passengers all waiting to check in. This resulted in passengers and their luggage disrupting a large part of the airport’s departure hall. In some cases, it was taking passengers up to five hours to reach the check-in desk. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has now strongly requested that airlines and airports to make urgent adjustments after acknowledging long queues for Thai Airways flights at Suvarnabhumi airport last week. CAAT confirmed that early morning flight check-in delays at the Thai Airways counters in Suvarnabhumi Airport were caused by a lack of check-in staff at the Thai Airways counters. For their part, Thai Airways conceded they were understaffed and that “more staff will now be added.” Airline executives rushed to the terminal and were on the scene trying to sort out the delays and keep passengers informed of the situation. Executives also stated that no one missed flights because of the check-in mayhem. It is no secret that Thai Airways is limping along with massive debts and many redundant staff unwilling to return to the company. This problem sounds familiar As Thailand’s borders re-open and travel restrictions continue to be eased, international travel is starting to pick up. However, the travel and hospitality industry are struggling to meet demand as staff shortages in this sector are at a critical level. Look at the chaos caused at European airports like London’s Heathrow or at Manchester Airports. There not only are airlines canceling hundreds of flights each day, but luggage is being left behind due to staff shortages. With the school holidays around the corner, things could get out of hand. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix to this problem, as it can take up to 3-6 months to train staff in the tech side of travel. Longer of course for pilots and cabin crew. Covid knock-on effect I suppose this situation was bound to happen as the knock-on effect of the Covid Pandemic took hold. Most industries were forced to make qualified staff redundant two years ago. Many have now found new work in different sectors and are unlikely to want to return to work in the travel industry again. Recruitment and HR departments are all working overtime but there is no quick fix, unfortunately. Apart from wanting to return home to see family and friends, the added stress caused by staff shortages could mean you having to fork out for additional hotel nights when your airline is forced to cancel a return flight. If you must travel back to Europe in the next few months, try to avoid weekend travel and select airlines that have enough options on where to fly to. Oh, and take a good paperback to read in the check-in lines. 12. file photo Twitter was going crazy after a French Muay Thai champion proudly showed off his Thai script tattoo with what many claimed was a glaring error. The story was picked up by international media, notes ASEAN NOW as Twitter people mocked the French hunk. One joked "Oh My Buddha!" with a shocked emoji face. Reigning Middleweight Superkombat Champion Jimmy Vienot, 26, showed his forearm with what was supposed to say Muay Thai or Thai Boxing. This is written มวย ไทย but many online who can read the Thai language suggested the first letter was not ม (an M sound) but the similar ฆ - a kh sound. This made the tattoo say "khuay Thai" a very rude word meaning a penis along with the word Thai. Thai dick. ASEAN NOW notes that many Thais may have to do a double take on the first letter as they would be expecting an M sound. It certainly appeared suspicious! Even if the Thai word for 'dick' is usually spelled with a different 'kh' letter namely ค. If the Thai media dare to print the word it is usually like this ค_ย. If you don't read Thai why not ask you Thai partner or a friend what he or she thinks! To us it looked a bit like a clumsy ม with the first loop filled in. Either way Jimmy could think about a skin graft! Jimmy became only the fourth non-Thai to win the Lumpinee Stadium title in 2019 according to a report on the story in the UK's Mirror tabloid. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-08 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Not just any thief - a three meter long python that had helped itself to a man's four prized bantams (chickens), the entire contents of the cage. The culprit was so full that he was just loafing around the top of the cage digesting the meal. Weeraphon Raksamerwong (we believe) was pictured smiling with the large snake that a rescue team soon had in custody and on its way back to nature. Wirat Pholarome, 49, the houseowner in Srisuttho sub-district suspected a snake had got one of his birds a while back. Now one had finished off the other four of his bantams that he keeps with other prized birds. Picture: Siam Rath But all was not lost. 19. BANGKOK, June 8 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said some restrictions remained in effect to govern the use of hemp and cannabis although they will be removed from the government’s narcotic list on June 9. Regarding the legalization of hemp and cannabis, Gen Prayut said people would be allowed to grow and use the plants but their use would not be completely liberalized because the abuse of cannabis was harmful. The behaviors of cannabis use must be controlled. For example, the prime minister said, cannabis smoking must not affect others and driving under the influence of cannabis was illegal. The use of cannabis flowers and floral clusters must be controlled by law because they contained narcotic substances, he said. 25. Sanook Thai Caption: Riding oblivious to pedestrians Thai zebra crossings are in the news once again after a video posted on the Facebook page that translates "So You Wanna Be Famous Return Part 2" featured an 11 second clip. In the clip a large group of students are crossing outside the Suranaree School on Chang Pheuak Road in downtown Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. The kids are going to school at 7 am on Thursday of last week. Sanook reported that cars had slowed down to allow the students to cross but a female motorcyclist came along the inside and plowed into one of the students. Both the rider and the student fell to the tarmac. Both were injured, though thankfully not seriously. The motorcyclist paid the student 2,000 baht and said that her hospital bills would have to come out of "Phor Ror Bor" or third party insurance. She said she didn't see the students as she was hurrying to work. The elder sister of victim said that she was thirteen year old Nana in M2, the second year of secondary school. Doctors had advised her to take two weeks off school but it was the start of term, she had lots of work and simply couldn't do that. The post on Facebook said: "Zebra crossings are still not safe in Thailand - even in front of schools with large groups of students crossing". Naew Na had still shots from the video apparently from CCTV at the school gates. Picture: Naew Na The whole issue of zebra crossings has been in the Thai news almost daily since an opthalmologist doctor called Kratai was killed on one by a speeding policeman on a Ducati earlier in the year, notes ASEAN NOW.
