  2. Sanook Thai Caption: Targeted him like going for a fish! Sanook reporters went to the north east of Thailand after they were told about a marital tiff involving a harpoon. In Moo 20 of Tajong sub-district in Lahansai, Buriram they found Chanita, 43, all too willing to share what happened the other night. She said her husband of 21 years was always getting drunk and making trouble. This occasion was no different. She admitted that she was tired after cutting sugar cane all day and lost it when he squeezed her throat. So she responded in kind with a swift grab of his crotch - and she didn't let go twisting to increase the pain. She claimed not to have used any weapon - he had fled and that was the end of it. Bunchoey, 45, found nearby at his mum's house, begged to differ. He spoke of his wife's incessant nagging for 21 years. He said they argued because he hadn't cooked the rice for dinner then she grabbed a harpoon usually used for fishing that was propped up against a wall. She attacked his nether regions then twisted the weapon just like she was targeting a fish. He fled to his mum's on a motorcycle and wasn't going to seek medical attention. But in the morning he was in agony and at Lahansai Hospital the doctor gave him 17 stitches. He was still biding his time at his mother's waiting for his wife to calm down as he feared another attack. He had no intention of pressing charges. 5. File photo Thailand on Friday (March 4) reported 23,834 new COVID-19 cases, 19,351 recoveries and 54 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. Friday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,918,996 with 23,124 deaths. The news comes as Thailand’s daily COVID-19 cases, confirmed by RT-PCR tests, are forecast by the Diseases Control Department to reach 40,000-50,000 cases in mid-April and may reach 100,000 if existing restrictions are further eased, according to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) yesterday (Thursday). Strict compliance with the requirements of Thailand’s COVID-19 “Level 4 Alert”, which allows stricter restrictions on restaurant dining, large gatherings, bars, pubs and karaoke joints, may limit the peak to about 20,000 cases a day, said the department. Level 5 is the highest which can involve imposing a curfew. *Thai PBS contributed to this report Discover Cigna’s range of health insurance solutions created for expats and local nationals living in Thailand - click to view -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-03-04 - Aetna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 10. Can we still afford to shop at Thai supermarkets? by Michael Bridge During the pandemic, many of us working saw automatic reductions in our salaries. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1252239-can-we-still-afford-to-shop-at-thai-supermarkets/
  11. by Michael Bridge During the pandemic, many of us working saw automatic reductions in our salaries. Also, retirees have seen their monthly pensions shrink as the Baht starts to get stronger. So, looking at the monthly overheads buying food and petrol has started to get expensive. Personally, when I first moved to Thailand the rate of exchange was great and you did not need to worry about your monthly overheads. Used to the bright lights of western supermarkets, like many expats I headed out to the big flashy supermarkets in Bangkok and Pattaya. Going shopping in many of these fancy supermarkets has changed, as you now tend to look very closely at the prices and shop around. Of course, the supermarkets will use the cost of importing as a reason. However, I think it is mostly due to greed by sellers to increase prices because they think all foreigners are wealthy. How wrong can they be? Up by 20% I would say my personal food shop has gone up around 20% in the last six months, especially if I stick to the expat-type style supermarkets. Fruit and vegetables seem to be excessively marked up. For example, this week two medium-sized carrots were THB45 in a Pattaya supermarket and avocadoes THB90 each. Market shopping Venturing to the local market in Pattaya this morning, I managed to buy two similar carrots plus a cabbage for just THB15, plus two large avocados for only THB70. Tomatoes were also cheap, so were fresh strawberries. So now I tend to get up early to buy fresh fruit and vegetables from the local markets. That said, I have to say with my western habits I do not think I will venture to these outside markets to buy my chicken, as the flies everywhere tend to put me off. Assume though that more expats will be heading over to their local Macro to put on the plastic gloves to delve around for a juicy chicken breast or cut of pork. I cannot do anything about the cost of filling up my car, however, I reckon my monthly fruit and vegetable bill will hopefully go down. Are you managing to find local markets that are not only enjoyable, but good for your wallet too? -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-03-04 - Aetna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. As Thailand continues to adjust to “living with covid” national Covid-19 hotline being overwhelmed with record daily phone calls from worried Thais By Nop Meechukhun PHOTO: Prachachat National – The total number of incoming calls on the national Thailand Covid-19 hotline, 1330, has exceeded 70,000 a day, exceeding the system capability, the National Health Security Office (NHSO) revealed today, March 3rd. 17. PHOTO: Prachachat By Nop Meechukhun National – The total number of incoming calls on the national Thailand Covid-19 hotline, 1330, has exceeded 70,000 a day, exceeding the system capability, the National Health Security Office (NHSO) revealed today, March 3rd. According to NHSO hotline records between February 21st and March 1st, the number of daily incoming calls was around 40,000-70,000 calls, while non-voice channels or online platforms (such as Line and Facebook) had reached more than 9,000 messages due to more than 20,000 new reported cases per day. The increased calls came as cases rose across the country, despite a national average of 95% of them asymptomatic or mild, and in highly vaccinated provinces, like Chonburi, over 99%. Calls have increased as hospitals and doctors have increasingly asked those without symptoms to stay home and self-isolate and rest and attempt to convince them that, with Omicron, Covid is mild or less for the overwhelming majority of people. However, many Thais continue to overwhelm hotlines when they test positive on home Covid-19 tests or want to “push” to be given hospital treatment or further care, even when doctors say it isn’t needed. This comes as the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, or CCSA, attempts to “change people’s mindset” around Covid-19 and reassure the public that, for most people, it isn’t an emergency requiring hospitals or doctors. This has, according to the CCSA, been a struggle, especially in rural provinces and areas that have, until recently, had few to almost no cases of Covid-19 and due to many people continuing to confuse the more severe Delta strain with the current Omicron strain that dominates the country.
