Thai Government Expresses Support for UN Resolution Against Violence in Ukraine by Thammarat Thadaphrom BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand voted in favor of a resolution against violence in Ukraine at an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN headquarters in New York, the United States. Following the debate, 141 member states out of 193 voted in favor of the resolution, 35 abstained, and five voted against. Seven other ASEAN states voted in favor of the resolution, while Cambodia and Laos abstained. Thailand’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations Suriya Chindawongse said on Wednesday that Thailand was gravely concerned about the escalation of hostilities and violence in Ukraine as a result of the use of military force, which has resulted in the death of innocent civilians and the destruction of property and civilian infrastructure. Thailand’s position is consistent with the statement made by ASEAN foreign ministers on Saturday. Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha stressed during a meeting this week that Thailand will retain its neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine crisis. by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s private sector has proposed that the government set up a joint committee to monitor the Russian-Ukraine conflict, saying the tension affects both global and local economies. The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry, and Banking (JSCCIB) has asked the administration to set up a joint committee between the government and the private sector. The proposal came from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) Chairman Suphan Mongkolsuthee. He said the private sector is concerned about the implications of the prolonged crisis, which has already raised the global oil price to 100 U.S. dollars per barrel, the highest rate in eight years. According to the FTI chairman, the rising fuel price will affect manufacturing costs, while the current inflation rate could affect the confidence of consumers and investors. Complications from the closure of airspaces and suspension of maritime cargo lines also pose a major threat to economic recovery. Meanwhile, the number of visitors from Russia this year is expected to reduce by half from the initial estimate of 500,000-600,000 people, while the national GDP is expected to grow between 2.5% and 4.5%. Mr. Poj Aramwattananont, Vice Chairman of JSCCIB, said the private sector will need to continue monitoring the situation closely, especially the impact of rising fuel and energy prices. On the potential increase of animal feed pricing, Mr. Poj said businesses have been working with the government to maintain the price, however, costs related to logistics will add to the suffering. Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon has inspected flooded areas in the Deep South. 18,371 households in 21 districts in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat are now affected by floods. About 49,000 rai of farmlands have been inundated. Authorities are channeling water away from flooded areas and have set up centers to facilitate evacuations and provide preliminary assistance to victims. Gen. Prawit has urged relevant agencies to work more proactively by issuing more warnings and taking more preventive actions. In areas where floods have lifted, responsible agencies are to rapidly survey damages. This is in order for aid to be promptly administered and for locals to return to their normal lives quickly. Deputy Interior Minister Niphon Bunyamanee said the water level has receded in some places but inundations remain in others. He explained that local administrative organizations may use their budgets to temporarily aid flood victims. However, compensation for damaged assets, perished animals and deceased persons will be doled out in accordance with rates prescribed by the Ministry of Finance. He said charitable foundations will also be providing monetary assistance to afflicted persons. Police investigating the death of actress Nida “Tangmo” Patcharaveerapong have resorted to using a lie detector after witness accounts became suspiciously murky. Polygraph testing was deemed necessary following conflicting accounts given by the five people who were with her on the speedboat when Tangmo fell into the Chao Phraya River on the night of February 24. The question investigators are seeking to answer is whether her death was an accident or the result of foul play. In a bid to find out who told the truth and who lied to them, they have turned to polygraph testing. Polygraphs are a well-established but controversial investigative technique. Thai police have used them in several high-profile cases where suspects and witnesses have offered conflicting testimony. Many researchers and experts insist that polygraph tests are still far from perfect as tools to determine if someone is lying. They also criticize the term “lie detector” to describe polygraphs as a complete misnomer. The country is currently experiencing a new wave of Covid-19 sparked by the virulent Omicron variant of the disease. Numbers are back up to over 20,000 cases a day with around 40 fatalities per day. The government has increased the ’danger level’ to four and has given autonomy to provincial health offices to make the best decisions for their remit but numbers have continued to trend upwards. The news comes as sixteen of the 96 Thai evacuees from Ukraine, who arrived in Bangkok yesterday, have tested positive for COVID-19 and are now isolated at the quarantine centre at Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute in Nonthaburi province, according to the Ministry of Public Health. Of the first group of 38, who arrived this morning at Suvarnabhumi international airport, three were found to be infected.
