  8. By Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) said the long-anticipated common transportation ticketing system will finally be piloted across the three metro systems in Bangkok from April. The office said the common transportation ticketing system will be rolled out for the MRT Blue Line, the MRT Purple Line, and the SRT Red Line services. This new system is based on the EMV contactless payment platforms. It is similar to credit and debit cards. Mrs. Wilairat Sirisophonsin, Deputy Director of the OTP, said the office has been conducting studies and designing the new system with all stakeholders. A bill on common ticket management is to be submitted to the Ministry of Transportation for review. The deputy chief said several factors must be considered when creating a centralized ticketing scheme, including different fare structures, entry fees, operational contracts, and the need to create a capable back office system to handle transactions. Meanwhile, all the three services to pilot the new ticketing system have already upgraded their infrastructure with contactless card readers. Passengers of the MRT Blue and Purple lines can now tap their contactless credit or debit cards at the gates to pay the fares, instead of having to purchase a separate ticket. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-02-16 - Aetna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 11. Atmosphere During Makha Bucha Reportedly Subdued By Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - Local media outlets have reported subdued Makha Bucha activity this year. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1250499-atmosphere-during-makha-bucha-reportedly-subdued/
  12. By Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - Local media outlets have reported subdued Makha Bucha activity this year. Many people have opted to prepare their own set of monk offerings, rather than buying pre-made offerings from vendors. Vendors have meanwhile reduced their supplies in anticipation of suppressed consumer spending. It is customary in Thailand to visit temples, make merit, attend sermons and perform good deeds to celebrate the gathering held between the Lord Buddha and 1,250 of his first disciples. Giving monks offerings is also a major part of the celebration. More and more people are favoring saving over spending and only making purchases on essential items. Vendors are currently selling monk-offering baskets at around 100 to 300 baht each, with many blaming low sales on the economic downturn caused by the global pandemic. New COVID cases - fuelled by the highly transmissible Omicron coronavirus variant - are further discouraging people from performing religious activities outdoors. One major Makha Bucha activity is the candle-lit circumambulation rite, which usually involves a mass gathering that puts participants at risk of contracting COVID-19. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-02-16 - Aetna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 18. Picture: Thai Rath It is expected that a decision will be made to officially change the name of Bangkok to Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. Ministers are expected to rubber stamp the request from the Royal Academy, reported Thai Rath. Henceforth the old name of Bangkok will just appear in brackets. The academy felt that this would be more modern and in line with real usage. Krung Thep Maha Nakhon will be the official English spelling from now on. This means Great City of Angels and is used by Thais to refer to their capital usually shortened to Krung Thep. Thais only use the word Bangkok when addressing foreigners who mostly don't understand the name they use. The full name of Bangkok, that starts with Krung Thep Maha Nakhon goes on to have about 145-150 letters in English script and is widely recognised as the longest placename in the world. Here is one version: Krungthepmahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathatiya Witsanukam Prasit. The name can be learned by going to YouTube and singing along to a hit song by Asanee/Wasan, notes ASEAN NOW's cultural affairs correspondent.
