File photo Thailand on Tuesday (March 15) reported 19,742 new COVID-19 cases, 24,125 recoveries and 70 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. Tuesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 3,226,697 with 23,848 deaths. The news comes as the Thai Medical Sciences Department has found four possible cases of infection by the BA.2.2 strain of the COVID-19 Omicron sub-variant in Thailand, but has asked the public not to panic because BA.2.2 is not yet regarded as a variant of concern, said the department’s head, Dr. Supakit Sirilak today (Monday). The strain was found in one foreigner and three Thais, with confirmation still pending. Having had a cocktail of vaccinations including Astra Zeneca, Pfizer, and Moderna in 2021, I seemed to have escaped. Then a week ago I woke up with a tickly throat which initially I thought could be due to the severe poor air quality the day before in Thailand. I did an Antigen test which showed negative, however, the next morning I still felt rough, and a 2nd test was positive. Initially, I went on Google to read up on Omicron’s symptoms, and the food and drink they suggested, luckily I had already. That night I was coughing a lot and sweating and so took Paracetamol and Strepsils and eventually decided sitting up was better than lying down. I was not too concerned as the general rule these days was to self-isolate and tough it out. The biggest issue was the cough, hot sweats, sneezing, and a few mild headaches. But to be honest back in the UK I have had a worse experience with just regular influenza. After about five days, I felt back to normal, but the advice is to leave it for around 7 days before venturing out again and wear a mask at all times. For the record, my health insurance would have covered me if I paid the first THB40K and I also had a separate cover for THB100K. That said personally I would have felt more intimated having to go to the hospital unless I was in distress of course. Thailand Detects 4 Suspected Cases of BA 2.2 Variant BANGKOK, (TNA) – Thailand found four suspected cases of BA 2.2 sub-lineage of BA.2 variant of Omicron, discovered in Hong Kong, said Director-general of the Department of Medical Sciences, Supakit Sirilak. He said random checks on 1,961 samples for the coronavirus strains found 99.7 per cent were the Omicron variant, comprising 32.4 per cent of BA.1 and 67.6 per cent of BA.2. His department weekly conducts genomic sequencing of the virus and reports the results to the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID), the leading database on genomic influenza data. Omicron has mutated into three subvariants (BA.1, BA.2, and BA.3). The Panat Nikhom Police was notified of the body over this past weekend near a road in the Ta Kham sub-district. Police and rescue workers arrived at the scene to find the body of the man who appeared to be aged around 60. His skull, arms, and legs were broken. No identification documents were found with him. His body was taken to a local hospital. It was unclear exactly how long he had been deceased as his body was decaying while lying in the heat of the midday under the hot sun. Additionally, this particular road was not traveled regularly. FDA deputy secretary-general Weerachai Nolwachai said his organization took action after the Poison Center of Ramathibodi Hospital found 14 children suffering methemoglobinemia after consuming unbranded sausages in eight provinces namely Chiang Mai, Phetchaburi, Saraburi, Trang, Phayao, Songkhlra, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Kanchanaburi. Officials of the FDA and the Public Health Ministry collected 102 samples of sausages nationwide. Examination was concluded with 44 samples, 22 of which were substandard and their producers were facing legal action, Mr Weerachai said. The positive projection came after data showed January exports reached $767.48 million, a leap of 50.89% from the previous month. Jewelry contributed to 3.61% of Thai exports in January. Excluding unrefined gold, the export value of the sector reached $580.29 million for a 48.16% increase. These figures indicate recovery in the sector following a slump brought about by the global pandemic. Positive factors affecting the gem and jewelry industry during the month include the recovering global economy and expanded COVID vaccine coverage in Thailand. The United States, India, Hong Kong, Germany and the United Kingdom are among the key trading partners.
