  2. Daily News Thai Caption: The power of Wasabi! CCTV posted on Facebook showed the moment that a Thai man having his lunch was knocked out by...... Wasabi! The incident made the national Thai news. Yes, the man keeled over backwards and had to be helped to recover his senses by his wife and the owner of the restaurant after putting too much of the fiery Japanese horseradish on his salmon sushi. An original post spoke of "being here one minute and gone the next". Daily News and the diner were full of expressions about "the power of wasabi". A flood of comments followed on the Facebook page as Japanese food and wasabi is known to many Thais. The near victim said he was fine now after he was unconscious for a few seconds as the "wasabi went right up into his brain". He warned others to go easy on it. As the deputy chief engineer of a section of the railway in Ayutthaya Province, 80 km north of Bangkok, Phuanglamchiak noted there are "advanced railway technologies that China brings to Thailand." The China-Thailand railway, an important part of the trans-Asian railway network, will be Thailand's first standard-gauge railway. When completed, the line will carry trains from Bangkok to the border town of Nong Kai, where a new bridge will connect it with the China-Laos railway, making it possible to travel by train from Bangkok, through Laos, to Kunming in southwest China's Yunnan Province. 6. Picture: Thai Rath A mystery woman has been found in a blue plastic trash drum in the Khao Phra sub-district of Suphanburi in central Thailand. The hands and feet of the unidentified corpse were bound. She was wearing no underwear, reported Thai Rath. A blanket and a fertilizer bag were found at the scene. Pol Maj-Gen Bunyarit Rortma, deputy at Region 7 of the RTP, called a meeting at the local police station to discuss developments. They are hoping that CCTV in the area will yield results. The media spoke to "Pa" (aunty) Uan who sells fruit nearby. She said that on Sunday she had seen a pick-up in the area with a blue drum in the back that had spent a lot of time by a tree. Picture: Thai Rath She thought nothing of it at the time, just that it was unusual they were spending so long there. She surmised they must be measuring land. Usually there are only vehicles draining septic tanks in the area. When she heard the news about the dead person she put two and two together. Pick-up driver "graaps" feet of father: "I didn't mean to kill your daughter" - one dead one injured in cycle smash Picture: Thai Rath A dramatic picture published by top Thai media Thai Rath highlighted the sheer tragedy that occurs on the Thai roads on a daily basis. 8. Picture: Thai Rath A dramatic picture published by top Thai media Thai Rath highlighted the sheer tragedy that occurs on the Thai roads on a daily basis. The picture shows 38 year old Nonwat from Sakon Nakhon putting his head to the feet of 82 year old Jan Thothong on the Udon Thani to Sakon Nakhon Road in Nong Nakham sub-district. Nonwat had just killed the deaf old man's daughter Suphan Thothong, 54, as she rode a bicycle with her grandson Woraphan, 3, on the back. The little boy was rushed to hospital in a grievous state. Suphan had a broken neck and was dead at the scene. Unbelievably the driver of the Vigo pick-up was on his way to sort out a speeding offence in his hometown after having stayed with his wife in Loei. As he "graaped" the feet of the old man he said: "It was an accident - I didn't mean to do it". It had been raining and the roads were slippery, reported Thai Rath. Muang Udon Thani police took the pick-up driver away and charged him with negligent driving causing death. They were giving him drugs and alcohol tests. Picture: Thai Rath A relative of the deceased, Nuan, 70, said that Suphan was very poor and hawked sweets and cakes in the village to get money to look after her aged parents and mentally handicapped daughter as well as her grandson that another child had left with her. Police said she had just been to the ATM to get money to buy her wares and was on the way home when tragedy struck and grandmother and grandson were hit from behind. The media carried further pictures of a pick-up with dents and a mangled bicycle in the undergrowth. Another tragic reminder of the perils of Thailand's roads. 12. Picture: Sim Rath Following a series of highly negative stories affecting tourism in Thailand and the "sandbox" island of Phuket in particular the country's police have joined in the gushing praise of a group of Thais who found a Russian tourist's necklace. The story hit the Thai media after four people helped the tourist in Phuket find what was described as a family heirloom that she lost in the sea last Thursday. Spokesman for the tourism police and deputy at the force Pol Maj-Gen Apichart Suribunya said that as soon as TPB chief Pol Lt-Gen Sukhun Phromyon had heard the fantastic news he sent in region 3 chief Pol Maj-Gen Kris Warit to find the four Thai heroes who "have provided such a positive for Thai tourism", reported Siam Rath. They are Leuachai, Chutikan, Nopparat and Wisanu. A beaming Apichart, celebrating some good news for once at TPB HQ, expressed his heartfelt thanks for the people acting as "great hosts" saying that Thailand would now be "Top of Mind" when it comes to world tourism. ASEAN NOW guesses he may have meant 'at the forefront'. He continued encouraging his compatriots to keep up the good work with their famous humanity and understanding of others noting that these features "have made Thai tourism so magical and enchanting to this present day". He also thanked the media for bringing the good news story to light. He made no mention of the other stories in the news in the last few weeks. The trouble over overcharging taxi mafia in Phuket, the attack and robbery of a German footballer's wife in Phang Nga and the hitman murder of an Indian gangland figure in Rawai. It seems that finding a necklace makes up for those mere bagatelles, notes ASEAN NOW. Mink, 22, who is sponsored by a Bangkok snooker club, came from behind to win 6-5 against Belgian Wendy Jans on the final black. Mink led 2-1 but trailed 3-5 before winning the last three frames at the Ding Junhui Snooker Academy. Mink, the work number 3 prior to the tournament, now gets a tour card for the main men's tour. Beaten semi finalists Reanne Evans of the UK and Hong Kong's Ng On Yee had that privilege this year. Mink is the only female in the world with a certified 147 maximum break that she achieved in practice in March 2019. Her mother was a cashier at a snooker club and her father introduced her to the game that is popular throughout the world. Mink started playing the game at age 10 and is sponsored and supported by the Hi-End Snooker Club in Sena Nikhon Soi 21, Lat Prao. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-02-15 - Aetna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 19. As the world's favorite sex-change surgery destination, Thailand takes the lead in its recognition of the complexity of human sexuality. There are, in fact, eighteen gender identities that are recognized. Prostitution is tolerated in Thailand, and it is one of the reasons that many foreigners travel to Thailand just to have sexual encounters with the locals, especially the famous ladyboys. The demand for such encounters has no signs of letting up, so quite few ladyboys end up making a living as prostitutes. Studies estimate that there could be up to 100,000 ladyboys across the country. Bangkok is home to one of the largest ladyboy communities in Thailand, and they can often be spotted at work or out walking the city streets. In Pattaya, Soi 6 is well-known for being packed with beer bars staffed by women while Soi 6/1, a handful of metres away, is known for its ladyboy bars. The same is true right across Pattaya, with certain areas where katoeys as they are known, tend to congregate. What maybe also at first hard for foreigners to take onboard, is it is the norm to find a katoey serving you at a bank or in the supermarket, as Thai companies will employ them. Tips on how to spot the difference between a woman or a ladyboy The ways to spot a ladyboy in Pattaya are a source of keen interest to many travelers as there are few revelations more shocking than discovering that the beautiful woman you are wooing was not born female. It is often said that Thai ladyboys are even more beautiful than Thai women, so it is an extremely easy mistake to make. It may provide some relief to know that ladyboys (in Thai: “katoeys”) are very rarely looking to trap and surprise people. If you are not interested in what they are offering, they will almost always just leave you alone. However, it could save you a few lady drinks and a lot of embarrassment if you can tell the difference between those glamorous girls who were born as girls and those who were not. Try looking out for the following clues. 1. Too Tall: The average height of a Thai woman is 157.3 cm (about 5ft 2in) while the average height for a man is 167.5 cm (about four inches taller). There are always exceptions to the rule but, generally speaking, taller women were probably not born as women. Tall people (of any nationality) generally also have large hands and feet, which can be another good indicator. 2. Too Feminine: This may sound faintly ridiculous, but ladyboys in Thailand often look and act more ladylike than the ladies! Everything seems exaggerated, particularly walking, where they look like they are on a constant catwalk. Look out also for the more pronounced swaying of the hips, more elegant posture (particularly when seated), excessively flicking and fidgeting with their hair and over-applied make-up. 3. The Voice: The melodic croon of “hello, handsome man” can be heard from beer bars throughout Bangkok and Pattaya, but there is a noticeable difference in pitch. Even with training, the voice of a ladyboy is distinctly deeper than that of a woman. As with the walking from point #2, ladyboys will often try to over-exaggerate the femininity, which comes off as kind of nasal-sounding. 4. Overacting (and overreacting): Ladyboys do not just exaggerate their femininity; they exaggerate everything! Every word and action are excessively flamboyant. This makes them stand out from the crowd because Thai culture is such that women (even those working in beer bars and go-go’s) are usually quite reserved. This does come with a dark side as katoeys in Pattaya are known for also reacting excessively to snubs and insults. Fights involving ladyboys are often very short, surprisingly violent, and best avoided. 5. The Dress Code: A fancy costume involving feathers and glitter is a dead giveaway that she is a cabaret dancer and therefore certainly a katoey, but such outfits are not that common on Walking Street and Soi Cowboy. A more visible example of the “too feminine” trait, ladyboys tend to dress in more revealingly than women. 6. Check the Angles: There are certain physical attributes of the male body which are difficult to hide. Men have broader shoulders, narrower hips, thicker veins which are closer to the surface of the skin, straighter wrists, squarer chins, wider jaws and, of course, an Adam’s apple. While looking out for these is a good guide, most of them are relative and difficult to accurately gauge and you can occasionally find some women with some of these traits. Even the Adam’s apple (which no woman has) is not a complete certainty as surgical operations are now available to reduce its size and prominence. 7. The Final Check: Most of the above signs are extremely subjective and none of them are guaranteed giveaways. There are some ladyboys who are, to all outside observations, totally female, just as there are some women who exhibit the physical and behavioural traits we have listed. There is only one fool-proof way to be sure: ask to see their ID card. All Thais are legally obliged to carry it with them and this will show the gender they were born as. Broadway Style Shows At the end of the day, everyone in Thailand accepts Ladyboys. In Bangkok and certainly in several large theatres across Pattaya there are very professional Broadway-style cabaret shows with the full cast starring Ladyboys. So, if you are curious why not book a seat and enjoy the show. (some may be closed due to the current pandemic) Many of them are incredibly talented and afterwards to supplement their salaries, you can have your photo taken with a beautiful katoey. 21. By Panithan Onthaworn As Thailand seeks to introduce an air travel bubble with India, analysts on Monday forecasted that the move could help recover Thailand’s battered tourism sector. Despite the resumption of Thailand’s quarantine-free Test and Go programme on February 1, India’s borders remain closed to tourists due to its travel ban. Only cargo flights and those with travel bubble agreements are currently allowed to fly in. The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) approved the Thai-Indian travel bubble proposal last week, instructing related agencies to speed up the procedures. The travel bubble agenda will soon be subject to cabinet approval in the coming days. 23. Students and staff at Huachiew Chalermprakiet University (HCU) making Chinese New Year decorations. (Photo: HCU / Facebook) ARANYA SIRIPHON|FANZURA BANU Thailand is reaping the benefits of a steady stream of Chinese students being enrolled in its universities. The trend, however, is not cost-free. The number of Chinese students enrolled in Thai universities have been on the rise. While Chinese students have varied reasons for picking Thailand, Thai universities have their own reasons for admitting them. The Thai government clearly wants to capitalise on this trend, which would boost the Thai economy and burnish the country’s credentials as an ‘educational hub’ for international students. However, there are a host of problems it has to grapple with, namely compromised academic standards and Chinese students flouting their visa conditions. According to Thailand’s Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC), the number of Chinese students choosing Thailand for their tertiary education has been rising in recent years. In 2009, Thai universities hosted 5,364 Chinese students. In 2020, the number had tripled to 14,423. Between 2018 and 2022, 7,231 Chinese students graduated from Thailand’s higher education institutes. The majority of the Chinese students prefer universities in the West, in countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. In Asia, Thailand —together with Japan and Singapore — count among the top choices for Chinese students.
