Jirabap Bhuridej following a request from FBI attaché Mr. Mike Chai, targeted Mr. Wang Yunhe, a Chinese national identified as the ringleader. This syndicate had been spreading a malware known as 911 S5, which hacked the IP addresses of 19 million computers across 190 countries, leading to extensive financial damage. The criminals exploited this malware to commit a range of offences. They hacked into computers in the United States to fraudulently apply for welfare assistance, siphoning the approved funds into their accounts without the knowledge of the actual applicants. Additionally, they engaged in stealing cryptocurrency, executing ransomware attacks against major organisations, and peddling child pornography. Bomb threats were also made to incite widespread fear. The international crackdown saw coordinated efforts from multiple countries, including Thailand and Singapore. The cybercriminals laundered millions of dollars, purchasing real estate and other assets in several countries, with Thailand being a significant target. Among the seized assets in Thailand were 7.5 million baht in various currencies, luxury watches valued over 30 million baht, jewellery worth over 50 million baht, a BMW X7 M50d SUV, several land and condominium title deeds, bank accounts, and a flash drive containing critical encryption data and passwords. These items were confiscated during raids on a house in Bang Lamung district and three condominiums in Na Jomtien, Chonburi province. Authorities continue to investigate companies established by this syndicate in Thailand. On June 1st, 2024, Khok Tum police received an emergency call about three individuals drowning at the Bott Camping Ground in Mueang, Lopburi. Although two men were rescued, one individual remains missing. Upon receiving the report, Khok Tum police, rescue divers, and other agencies rushed to the scene. Thirty-two-year-olds Mr. Anon and Mr. Sumethi, who were pulled from a pond by the brave bystander, were transported to a local hospital. Both men were exhausted and had ingested water. According to initial findings, the group had gone camping for a relaxing getaway. In a regrettable turn of events, they consumed alcohol and decided to take a boat out on a nearby pond. The camp owner had cautioned them about strong winds and the lack of lifejackets, but the warning went unheeded. Ignoring the advice, Mr. Anon, Mr. Sumethi, and Mr. Rungwit, also 32, ventured onto the water. An hour later, their friend Ms. Phattharapon noticed they were in distress and alerted Anchalee, the camp owner. Sixty-four-year-old Mr. Brand, a French expat vacationing with his Thai wife, sprang into action. Armed with lifejackets, he paddled to the struggling trio. He succeeded in pulling Anon and Sumethi to safety but was unaware that Rungwit was also in the water. Mr. Sumethi later explained to rescuers that strong winds and turbulent currents capsized their boat while they attempted to return to shore. Despite their efforts, they struggled to stay afloat. Found at midday today opposite Soi 3, Beach Road, the unidentified man's death is currently under investigation. According to initial police reports, authorities were alerted to the scene where they found the body lying face down, with only a pair of black shoes on. A pair of black shorts had washed ashore nearby. The young man, who had a flower tattoo on his left arm and a bird tattoo on his right arm, showed no immediate signs of physical abuse, suggesting that foul play might not be a factor. Police Lieutenant Colonel Anand Mahakit-aswakul, deputy inspector at Pattaya City police station, quickly reached the scene along with rescue workers from Sawang Boriboon. They cordoned off the area to prevent onlookers from getting too close while they conducted a preliminary investigation. Khacharin Chuchum, a Pattaya special affairs officer, was the first to be notified of the body by a local umbrella and day-bed rental operator. "I rushed to help, but it was clear that he had already passed away. I kept people away and called the police immediately," Chuchum stated. The body has been transported to Bang Lamung Hospital, and will subsequently be sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Police Hospital for a detailed autopsy to determine the cause of death. Early estimates suggest the man may have been dead for approximately five hours before he was found. Authorities face the challenging task of identifying the deceased and piecing together his last hours. Until then, the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident remain shrouded in mystery. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul declared that the country has ignored the issue for too long, during an event commemorating World No Tobacco Day yesterday. “The authorities must begin solving the problem right now.” Anutin, a non-smoker, highlighted the rapid spread of e-cigarettes among young people, with an alarming rise in the number of addicted minors. Like traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes contain toxic chemicals that can lead to diseases such as cancer, coronary stenosis, and emphysema. In response to numerous complaints from parents, the minister has directed state agencies to take legal action against vendors. Ramathibodi Hospital also released a statement yesterday condemning all forms of smoking and urged the government to enforce regulations banning the importation and distribution of e-cigarettes. The hospital presented findings from its latest four-year study on adolescents who regularly use e-cigarettes or vapes. The study showed that these adolescents are at higher risk of developing respiratory-related diseases: 1.8 times for asthma, 2.1 times for bronchitis, and 1.8 times for general breathing difficulties. The Dental Association and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) launched a campaign warning young people about the dangers of vaping. Dr Pongthep Wongwatcharapaiboon explained that e-cigarettes may appear appealing due to their lack of smoke, pleasant smells, and portability. While some individuals use e-cigarettes to reduce stress, Dr Pongthep warned that this is merely a trick played by nicotine on the mind. “As nicotine stimulates the release of dopamine, the chemical of happiness, vaping may seem good at first, but it is a fake happiness. It creates a whiff of pleasure without doing anything meaningful and can lead to addiction and depression in the end.” According to some vapers, the sensation of stress relief or mild euphoria only lasts two to three minutes. Dangers of vaping Dr Pongthep also debunked the belief that vapes can help people quit smoking regular cigarettes, noting that e-cigarettes contain more nicotine than traditional ones. “With easier access anywhere and at any time, they are even more dangerous.” Dr Adirek Sriwatthanawongsathit, president of the Dental Association of Thailand, pointed out that e-cigarettes also increase the risk of gum disease, which can result in tooth loss. He issued a message for parents. “Parents are the ones who support their children with resources and opportunities to use e-cigarettes, which is very concerning. They may think they are making them happy, but they are just handing them poison.” Jadet Thammathataree, secretary-general of the National Health Security Office (NHSO), announced that the NHSO offers a free consultation service via its 1600 hotline for people who wish to quit smoking. He mentioned that the service can help 32% of people quit smoking, compared to 3% without the consultation, reported Bangkok Post. A Nigerian man was arrested on Koh Phangan after using his claimed influence to demand free food and accommodation, sparking complaints among the island’s residents. The suspect, 35-year-old Benjamin Chemelia Ene, had overstayed his Thai visa by 276 days. The arrest was made by a team led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Vinij Bunchit from the Tourist Police Division 5, along with Koh Phangan Sub-district Chief Naphadol Khaomali. The team acted on multiple complaints from local businesses and residents who reported Ene’s suspicious behaviour and his tendency to claim false influence back in Nigeria. Authorities swooped in on Ene after he displayed suspicious behaviour upon sighting a Tourist Police patrol car. Attempting to flee, he darted into a nearby hotel but was swiftly apprehended. He was taken to Koh Phangan Police Station, where he disclosed his overstay and confessed to the fraudulent claims he used to avoid payment for accommodations and food. In a recent move to enhance road safety, officials in Pattaya have launched an intensive crackdown on motorbikes using the city’s central underpass. This enforcement blitz, initiated by the Pattaya City Peacekeeping Division in collaboration with the Pattaya City Police Traffic Division, has already seen numerous riders prosecuted. The crackdown has, however, sparked a robust debate among residents. Many locals are in favour of the stringent measures, praising the actions taken by the authorities. One resident remarked, “Good deeds should be appreciated. This should be done consistently and should have been implemented long ago. It should be enforced daily with heavy fines.” This sentiment resonates with those who believe that motorcycles pose significant risks in the underpass, primarily designed for larger vehicles. Another commuter underscored the danger posed by motorcycles in the congested underpass. “We see motorcycles in the underpass daily, which is very dangerous. There are only two lanes for large vehicles. Clear signs prohibiting motorcycles should be installed, but some people are aware of the prohibition and still violate it.” On the flip side, not everyone is on board with the enforcement measures. A disgruntled citizen questioned the fairness of the restrictions, voicing concerns about the safety and practicality for motorbike users. “Can’t we share the road? The 1-kilometer Pattaya Central Underpass is meant to relieve straight-through traffic. However, it makes motorcycles take a risk with vehicles coming from Soi Nern Plub Wan, which is very crowded, not to mention those returning from the motorway. Motorcycles are treated unfairly. They are subjected to laws that are 45 years old.” As the debate rages on, the authorities remain firm on their stance, emphasising the priority of road safety. Whether these measures will lead to a more harmonious and safer road environment in Pattaya remains to be seen.
