Starting December 1, Thai Airways (THAI) will resume its daily direct passenger flights between Brussels Airport and Bangkok. This eagerly awaited route, which was suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic, significantly enhances Brussels Airport’s intercontinental offerings. After a four-year hiatus, Brussels Airport is thrilled to welcome back THAI, a former member of its prestigious airline community. The airline has once again chosen Brussels Airport as its hub in the Benelux region, much to the delight of Belgian travellers. Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport, stated that the daily direct connection to Bangkok strengthens the airport’s position as a European hub and offers passengers even more travel options to Asia. “It is great news to welcome Thai Airways back to Brussels Airport. For Thai passengers too, our airport offers an ideal gateway to the rest of Europe. We look forward to a great collaboration.” From December 1, THAI will operate a daily service to Bangkok using the state-of-the-art Boeing 787-8. Known for its fuel efficiency and reduced noise impact, this aircraft will serve both tourism and business travellers. The return of the Thai airline marks a significant enhancement to Brussels Airport’s intercontinental network, providing direct access to one of Asia’s most vibrant destinations. As a member of the Star Alliance, THAI not only bolsters Brussels Airport’s status as a key European hub but also strengthens its connection with Brussels Airlines, the airport’s home carrier, reported Travel and Tour World. This alliance enhances Brussels Airport’s extensive network of European and international routes, further solidifying its role as a major gateway for both European and global travellers. In related news, in a groundbreaking move for aviation luxury in the Asia-Pacific region, Airbus has inked a deal with THAI to retrofit its fleet of 20 A320ceo aircraft with premium reclining business class seats. This marks Airbus’ first-ever cabin retrofit for a single-aisle fleet in this part of the world. by Top Top Photo courtesy of Travel and Tour World Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-03 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Phuket Airport is set to undergo a major expansion, investing 6 billion baht to construct a new terminal dedicated to international flights. This development aims to increase the airport's capacity from handling 12.5 million passengers annually to 18 million. The airport’s director, Monchai Tanod, highlighted the urgent need for this expansion. Recent data shows that last month, Phuket Airport saw an influx of approximately 16,000 domestic passengers daily, reaching 90% of its pre-Covid-19 traffic levels. International flights were even busier, averaging 22,000 daily arrivals and departures, which is 7% higher than the numbers recorded in 2019 before the pandemic. Monchai anticipates that passenger numbers this year will at least match the 2019 figure of 18 million. The airport is currently working on finalising the design for the new terminal. "If the design is completed this year, the project will be submitted to the National Environment Board for approval," he said. The proposed terminal will significantly enhance passenger convenience and potentially open new routes and opportunities for airlines. Construction is expected to commence in 2026 and may take up to three years to complete. Airports of Thailand (AoT) has allocated a 6-billion baht budget for this significant project. Monchai also mentioned a long-term vision to construct a dedicated terminal for seaplanes, reflecting growing tourist demands. In related news, Nutthajit Oonsiem, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Asean, South Asia, and South Pacific marketing team, announced a celebratory welcome for the inaugural SG89 flight operated by Spice Jet. This flight route, connecting New Delhi directly to Phuket, marks Spice Jet’s first direct service in this segment and signifies growth in tourist traffic. With daily flights by Spice Jet now in operation, Thailand expects to welcome approximately two million Indian visitors this year, contributing at least 79 billion baht in tourism revenue. Notably, Indian travellers currently constitute the third-largest group of arrivals at Phuket Airport. Picture courtesy; Wikipedia -- 2024-06-03 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Thaksin's Lese Majeste Lawsuit Doesn't Worry Paetongtarn Picture courtesy: Thai Rath In a significant development today, Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra addressed the media, stating that her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, is unconcerned about the lese majeste lawsuit filed against him. In a significant development today, Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra addressed the media, stating that her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, is unconcerned about the lese majeste lawsuit filed against him. This declaration comes amidst heightened political tensions and ongoing legal battles for the former prime minister. Thaksin, who is the de facto head of the Pheu Thai Party, faces allegations from 40 senators accusing him of breaching Thailand’s strict lese majeste laws, which protect the monarchy from defamation and insults. The case was filed last week, but Thaksin did not attend the initial Office of the Attorney-General's (OAG) formal readout citing a COVID-19 infection. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 18. Paetongtarn quoted her father as saying he is ready to defend himself truthfully in court. She also noted the allegations are politically motivated, originating from a former attorney-general during the junta-led government of Prayut Chan-o-cha, who came to power after the 2014 coup that ousted Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra. The case traces back to comments Thaksin allegedly made in a 2009 interview in Seoul, wherein he supposedly linked the monarchy to the 2006 coup that ended his premiership. These remarks have now resurfaced as a focal point of the legal action against him. Thaksin, a billionaire and influential political figure, has had a rocky legal history. Convicted in absentia on other charges of power abuse and facing an 8-year jail sentence, he lived in self-exile for 17 years before returning last August. His sentence was subsequently reduced to one year by royal pardon, and he spent time in a private hospital ward instead of prison. He was paroled earlier this year. The lese majeste lawsuits are notoriously complex and lengthy, often taking several years to reach a verdict. If convicted, Thaksin could face between three to fifteen years in prison. The political ramifications of this case are significant, as it continues to highlight the deep divisions within Thai politics. As the court date approaches, all eyes will be on how Thaksin handles yet another legal battle in his tumultuous political career. The shocking discovery of a young, naked foreign man's body on Pattaya Beach has left both tourists and locals in a state of concern. Found at midday today opposite Soi 3, Beach Road, the unidentified man's death is currently under investigation. According to initial police reports, authorities were alerted to the scene where they found the body lying face down, with only a pair of black shoes on. A pair of black shorts had washed ashore nearby. The young man, who had a flower tattoo on his left arm and a bird tattoo on his right arm, showed no immediate signs of physical abuse, suggesting that foul play might not be a factor. Police Lieutenant Colonel Anand Mahakit-aswakul, deputy inspector at Pattaya City police station, quickly reached the scene along with rescue workers from Sawang Boriboon. They cordoned off the area to prevent onlookers from getting too close while they conducted a preliminary investigation. Khacharin Chuchum, a Pattaya special affairs officer, was the first to be notified of the body by a local umbrella and day-bed rental operator. "I rushed to help, but it was clear that he had already passed away. I kept people away and called the police immediately," Chuchum stated. The body has been transported to Bang Lamung Hospital, and will subsequently be sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Police Hospital for a detailed autopsy to determine the cause of death. Early estimates suggest the man may have been dead for approximately five hours before he was found. Authorities face the challenging task of identifying the deceased and piecing together his last hours. Until then, the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident remain shrouded in mystery. With the summer tourist season in full swing, police are keen to resolve the case promptly to reassure both locals and international visitors. Call for Thailand to Back Major Theme Park Investments Picture courtesy: Glaxy The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) is urging Thailand to provide robust support for major theme parks, potentially becoming a home to renowned names like Disney. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1328728-call-for-thailand-to-back-major-theme-park-investments/ -
The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) is urging Thailand to provide robust support for major theme parks, potentially becoming a home to renowned names like Disney. IAAPA's Board Chairman, Wuthichai Luangamornlert, stressed the need for significant investment incentives and infrastructure developments to attract high-profile investors. Wuthichai pointed to examples like China and Hong Kong, where government initiatives played a crucial role in the development of theme parks such as Shanghai Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland. These projects not only involved substantial financial backing but also long-term planning, including land reclamation and transport system upgrades. Intensive support helped these parks thrive, offering thousands of jobs and spurring tourism. The Thai government’s current investment laws, Wuthichai argues, are outdated, favouring industrial segments over the burgeoning theme park industry. For instance, existing tax regulations are ill-suited to high-tech simulator systems, making it challenging for investors. Wuthichai recommends new investment regulations that provide longer-term tax breaks to make the market more attractive to the industry. Thailand's booming tourism sector presents a unique opportunity for theme parks to flourish. Without world-class attractions, affluent Thai tourists often travel abroad to visit theme parks. Establishing a theme park in Thailand could encourage these tourists to spend domestically, further stimulating the local economy. Moreover, Wuthichai pointed out that the government's plan for a casino and entertainment complex needs clearer regulations to ensure it can effectively attract visitors. Jakob Wahl, IAAPA president and chief executive, noted this year has seen steady growth in global amusement park revenues after an initial post-pandemic surge in 2023. The trend is moving towards immersive experiences, combining accommodation with attractions to extend visitor stays. High-profile brands and characters continue to drive these developments, with significant investments expected in the Middle East and Asia, including China and Vietnam. However, Wuthichai highlighted that Thailand currently lacks any large-scale theme park projects, with only small expansions to existing attractions like water parks attached to malls. IAAPA recently hosted its Asia trade show at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, showcasing over 350 exhibitors and highlighting new trends and products in the amusement park sector. By stepping up its game, Thailand could potentially become a significant player in the global theme park industry, offering exciting new experiences to both local and international visitors. Thailand cracks down on illegal e-cigarettes to protect children by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Authorities in Thailand are set to take decisive action against the illegal use of e-cigarettes, emphasising the need to protect children from the health risks associated with vaping. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1328725-thailand-cracks-down-on-illegal-e-cigarettes-to-protect-children/ -
Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Authorities in Thailand are set to take decisive action against the illegal use of e-cigarettes, emphasising the need to protect children from the health risks associated with vaping. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul declared that the country has ignored the issue for too long, during an event commemorating World No Tobacco Day yesterday. “The authorities must begin solving the problem right now.” Anutin, a non-smoker, highlighted the rapid spread of e-cigarettes among young people, with an alarming rise in the number of addicted minors. Like traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes contain toxic chemicals that can lead to diseases such as cancer, coronary stenosis, and emphysema. In response to numerous complaints from parents, the minister has directed state agencies to take legal action against vendors. Ramathibodi Hospital also released a statement yesterday condemning all forms of smoking and urged the government to enforce regulations banning the importation and distribution of e-cigarettes. The hospital presented findings from its latest four-year study on adolescents who regularly use e-cigarettes or vapes. The study showed that these adolescents are at higher risk of developing respiratory-related diseases: 1.8 times for asthma, 2.1 times for bronchitis, and 1.8 times for general breathing difficulties. The Dental Association and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) launched a campaign warning young people about the dangers of vaping. Dr Pongthep Wongwatcharapaiboon explained that e-cigarettes may appear appealing due to their lack of smoke, pleasant smells, and portability. While some individuals use e-cigarettes to reduce stress, Dr Pongthep warned that this is merely a trick played by nicotine on the mind. “As nicotine stimulates the release of dopamine, the chemical of happiness, vaping may seem good at first, but it is a fake happiness. It creates a whiff of pleasure without doing anything meaningful and can lead to addiction and depression in the end.” According to some vapers, the sensation of stress relief or mild euphoria only lasts two to three minutes. Dangers of vaping Dr Pongthep also debunked the belief that vapes can help people quit smoking regular cigarettes, noting that e-cigarettes contain more nicotine than traditional ones. “With easier access anywhere and at any time, they are even more dangerous.” Dr Adirek Sriwatthanawongsathit, president of the Dental Association of Thailand, pointed out that e-cigarettes also increase the risk of gum disease, which can result in tooth loss. He issued a message for parents. “Parents are the ones who support their children with resources and opportunities to use e-cigarettes, which is very concerning. They may think they are making them happy, but they are just handing them poison.” Jadet Thammathataree, secretary-general of the National Health Security Office (NHSO), announced that the NHSO offers a free consultation service via its 1600 hotline for people who wish to quit smoking. He mentioned that the service can help 32% of people quit smoking, compared to 3% without the consultation, reported Bangkok Post. A survey conducted by the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Education, and the World Health Organisation revealed that the rate of e-cigarette use among adolescents aged 13 to 15 years rose by 8.1% in 2021, compared to a 3.3% increase in 2015. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-01 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

A Nigerian man was arrested on Koh Phangan after using his claimed influence to demand free food and accommodation, sparking complaints among the island’s residents. The suspect, 35-year-old Benjamin Chemelia Ene, had overstayed his Thai visa by 276 days. The arrest was made by a team led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Vinij Bunchit from the Tourist Police Division 5, along with Koh Phangan Sub-district Chief Naphadol Khaomali. The team acted on multiple complaints from local businesses and residents who reported Ene’s suspicious behaviour and his tendency to claim false influence back in Nigeria. Authorities swooped in on Ene after he displayed suspicious behaviour upon sighting a Tourist Police patrol car. Attempting to flee, he darted into a nearby hotel but was swiftly apprehended. He was taken to Koh Phangan Police Station, where he disclosed his overstay and confessed to the fraudulent claims he used to avoid payment for accommodations and food. Picture courtesy: Naewna Residents of Koh Phangan expressed relief following Ene’s arrest, as his behaviour had caused significant concern in the local community. Many local businesses were wary of his intimidating tactics, particularly his assertions of possessing influential connections in Nigeria to gain free services. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about visa overstayers and their impact on tourist destinations in Thailand. Local authorities have stepped up efforts to monitor and manage such occurrences, ensuring both residents' and tourists’ safety and comfort. Tourist police say they will continue vigilant monitoring and encourage the public to report any suspicious activities. This strategy is part of broader efforts to maintain the integrity and welcoming atmosphere of popular tourist destinations like Koh Phangan. For now, Ene remains in custody and will face legal proceedings both for his visa overstay and the fraudulence used in exploiting locals. Motorbike Ban in Pattaya Underpass Sparks Heated Debate Picture courtesy: Pattaya Mail In a recent move to enhance road safety, officials in Pattaya have launched an intensive crackdown on motorbikes using the city’s central underpass. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1328719-motorbike-ban-in-pattaya-underpass-sparks-heated-debate/ -
In a recent move to enhance road safety, officials in Pattaya have launched an intensive crackdown on motorbikes using the city’s central underpass. This enforcement blitz, initiated by the Pattaya City Peacekeeping Division in collaboration with the Pattaya City Police Traffic Division, has already seen numerous riders prosecuted. The crackdown has, however, sparked a robust debate among residents. Many locals are in favour of the stringent measures, praising the actions taken by the authorities. One resident remarked, “Good deeds should be appreciated. This should be done consistently and should have been implemented long ago. It should be enforced daily with heavy fines.” This sentiment resonates with those who believe that motorcycles pose significant risks in the underpass, primarily designed for larger vehicles. Another commuter underscored the danger posed by motorcycles in the congested underpass. “We see motorcycles in the underpass daily, which is very dangerous. There are only two lanes for large vehicles. Clear signs prohibiting motorcycles should be installed, but some people are aware of the prohibition and still violate it.” On the flip side, not everyone is on board with the enforcement measures. A disgruntled citizen questioned the fairness of the restrictions, voicing concerns about the safety and practicality for motorbike users. “Can’t we share the road? The 1-kilometer Pattaya Central Underpass is meant to relieve straight-through traffic. However, it makes motorcycles take a risk with vehicles coming from Soi Nern Plub Wan, which is very crowded, not to mention those returning from the motorway. Motorcycles are treated unfairly. They are subjected to laws that are 45 years old.” As the debate rages on, the authorities remain firm on their stance, emphasising the priority of road safety. Whether these measures will lead to a more harmonious and safer road environment in Pattaya remains to be seen.
