This morning marked a significant moment for Thailand’s tourism industry as the first direct flight from Almaty, Kazakhstan, landed at Surat Thani International Airport. This inaugural flight carried 212 passengers, arriving at 7.30am, signaling a new era of connectivity between the two countries. The occasion saw a warm welcome from local officials, including Surat Thani’s Deputy Governor Nanthawat Charoenwan, Airport Director Suksawat Sukhawanno, and representatives from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Among the passengers were the Thai Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Chatchawan Sakornsinsuwan, Kazakhstani travel operators, and media personnel. This direct flight route is a result of a collaboration between a leading Kazakhstani tour company, Selfie Travel, Fun & Sun, and Scat Airlines. The Boeing 737-Max, capable of seating 212 passengers, is scheduled to operate every ten days from May to September, totalling 13 flights during this period. TAT marked the maiden flight with a water salute and distributed elephant keychain souvenirs to passengers and scarves to the cabin crew, highlighting the Amazing Thailand brand. The choice of Surat Thani as a destination aligns with TAT’s strategic plan to boost connectivity to both major and secondary cities within the country. This expansion is expected to increase travel from Kazakhstan and neighbouring CIS regions to popular Thai destinations such as Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Tao, and other locales in Surat Thani and Krabi. The launch comes just in time for Kazakhstan’s summer season, which runs from May to September. Kazakhstan has emerged as a lucrative market with high spending potential. In 2023, the number of Kazakhstani tourists visiting Thailand surged by 190% compared to the previous year, reaching 172,282 visitors. This historic rise coincides with a tourism cooperation agreement signed on March 23 between Thailand and Kazakhstan, further bolstered by Thailand’s extension of visa exemptions to Kazakhstani passport holders for stays of up to 30 days, valid until August 31. The arrival of this direct flight signifies burgeoning ties and mutual benefits for both nations, promising a vibrant and prosperous future for tourism. A well-known real estate company has come under fire for a recent campaign offering a free pet with the purchase of a luxury home. The promotion, which allowed buyers to select from five different breeds of dogs or cats, has ignited widespread criticism from both the public and animal welfare advocates. A Facebook user’s open letter served as a catalyst for the backlash. She expressed concern over the possible negative consequences on animal welfare. Her post, which quickly went viral, argued that pets should not be used as marketing tools and warned about the potential for increased instances of pet abandonment and neglect. The user's arguments struck a chord with many, highlighting how such promotions might end up trivialising pet ownership responsibilities. Numerous comments backed her up, pointing out that the campaign seemed to overlook long-term commitments and ethical treatment of animals. Suggestions poured in, advocating for the company to instead collaborate with animal welfare organisations to promote more ethical and socially beneficial activities. In response to the widespread criticism, the real estate firm has removed the promotional images and details from their website and social media channels. However, they have yet to issue an official statement addressing whether the campaign will be formally cancelled or if they will offer any form of restitution to customers who had already agreed to receive a pet with their home purchase. This controversy has sparked a larger conversation about the ethics of involving animals in marketing strategies. Critics contend that such promotions can lead to irresponsible pet ownership and a higher likelihood of abandoned pets. The uproar surrounding this campaign underscores the necessity for companies to weigh ethical considerations in their marketing strategies. The public reaction highlights that animals should be treated with respect, and their welfare should not be compromised for commercial gain. British Pensioner Struggles with Frozen Pension in Thailand Picture courtesy: Head Topics UK An 87-year-old British woman is grappling with her move to Thailand as she struggles to survive on a UK state pension frozen at just £300 per month, equivalent to approximately 14,000 baht. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1328706-british-pensioner-struggles-with-frozen-pension-in-thailand/ -
An 87-year-old British woman is grappling with her move to Thailand as she struggles to survive on a UK state pension frozen at just £300 per month, equivalent to approximately 14,000 baht. Christine Gloria Fox relocated to Thailand’s east coast near Pattaya 24 years ago to be closer to her family. Instead of enjoying her retirement, nearly all her pension is consumed by healthcare costs. Due to a UK policy, Fox’s pension has remained static since her move, as the UK does not uprate pensions in certain countries. Fox now longs to return to the UK. However, deteriorating health has rendered her unfit to fly, imposing significant financial strain on her and her son, Jon Fox, aged 63. Jon, who has resided in Thailand for 35 years, constructed a modest studio apartment for his mother behind his car rental business. “She’s taken too many tumbles. She can’t walk properly, falls over frequently, and has worsening vision. We’re trying to gather £5,000 to £6,000 for her eye operation,” Jon explained. Despite Christine’s intense desire to return to the UK, local doctors have yet to grant her a fit-to-fly certificate, anchoring her in Thailand. Jon and his daughter contribute significantly, doubling Christine’s income to cover essential living and healthcare expenses. “That’s just for necessities, not luxuries like handbags,” Jon added. The financial burden has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has further strained their finances. This situation affects around 500,000 British citizens living outside Europe, who do not receive annual state pension increases. According to iNews UK, retirees in countries like Australia and Canada face similar challenges due to this UK policy. Christine remains deeply regretful about her decision to move and has voiced her dissatisfaction. She believes she would have been better off staying in the UK. The Department for Work and Pensions maintains that information about the financial implications of moving abroad is available on its website. Move Forward MP Chulapong Yukate has urged Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa to outline his vision and stance on Thailand’s foreign policy. The public and legislators alike are keen to understand the direction Maris intends to steer the nation's international relations. Chulapong, who is also the deputy chairperson of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, presented this call for clarity to reflect widespread public interest and concern. The demand for an explanation follows Maris's recent appointment in late April, replacing Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara, a long-time member of the ruling Pheu Thai party. Maris’s appointment has not been without controversy, as critics point out his close ties to the embattled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Chulapong specifically urged Maris to clarify Thailand’s stance on pivotal global relationships, especially concerning superpowers like the United States and China. “What are Thailand’s standpoints concerning the relationship between superpowers, like the United States and China?” he asked. One pressing issue is the situation in Myanmar, where an ongoing civil war has led to a significant influx of displaced persons into Thailand. Addressing this, Chulapong questioned, “How will Thailand seek help and support from ASEAN countries, China, and the US concerning Myanmar issues?” Maris, 63, is a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience, and his stance on these pressing issues will be crucial in shaping Thailand’s foreign policy. The public and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs await his detailed response. The country’s approach to international relations, especially in a region fraught with geopolitical tensions, will have significant implications. As such, Maris's forthcoming vision will be essential in navigating these complex waters, ensuring national interests and stability are maintained. The clarity and decisiveness of his response could set the course for Thailand’s diplomatic future. TOP: Chulapong Yukate. Thai Activist Seeks Court Halt on Sale of Decade-Old Rice Picture courtesy: Thai PBS via The Thaiger Thai activist Srisuwan Janya has petitioned the Central Administrative Court to halt the Commerce Ministry's auction of approximately 15,000 tonnes of rice that has been in storage for over a decade. The rice originates from the Yingluck Shinawatra government's controversial rice pledging scheme. Picture courtesy: Thai PBS via The Thaiger Thai activist Srisuwan Janya has petitioned the Central Administrative Court to halt the Commerce Ministry's auction of approximately 15,000 tonnes of rice that has been in storage for over a decade. The rice originates from the Yingluck Shinawatra government's controversial rice pledging scheme. The background to this story stems from the rice pledging scheme, which was intended to boost rice farmers' incomes by buying rice at above-market rates. However, the scheme ended in scandal and has left a large quantity of aged rice in storage. The Commerce Ministry, under the supervision of the Public Warehouse Organisation, plans to auction this rice soon, but Srisuwan argues that serious concerns remain about its safety and quality. In his petition, Srisuwan notes that many rice experts oppose the auction, arguing that rice stored for such an extended period loses nutritional value, becomes inedible, and may be infested with insects. Although the Department of Medical Sciences has tested samples and declared them edible, Srisuwan voices scepticism about the reliability of these tests. He questions whether the samples were genuinely representative of the rice stored in Surin province’s warehouses since the pledging scheme. Further, Srisuwan highlights that the auction's terms do not specify whether the rice must be exported or can be sold within Thailand. He warns that exporting such old rice could damage the reputation of Thai rice globally, while domestic consumption might pose health risks to local consumers. Given these concerns, Srisuwan has asked the court to issue an injunction to suspend the auction, arguing that it poses unacceptable risks to public health and the country's international image. The court's decision is eagerly awaited, as it could set a precedent for how aged agricultural products are managed in Thailand. -- 2024-06-01 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Police break up network aiding foreigners to stay in Thailand Foreigners, accused of operating a business without a permit, are summoned at Central Investigation Bureau in Bangkok, Thailand, Friday, May 31, 2024. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) Thai police have dismantled a vast network that illicitly assisted foreigners, primarily Russians, in securing long-term stays in Thailand through fraudulent means involving shell companies, officials reported on Friday. Foreigners, accused of operating a business without a permit, are summoned at Central Investigation Bureau in Bangkok, Thailand, Friday, May 31, 2024. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) Thai police have dismantled a vast network that illicitly assisted foreigners, primarily Russians, in securing long-term stays in Thailand through fraudulent means involving shell companies, officials reported on Friday. The operation, spearheaded by a 45-year-old Russian woman and a Thai accomplice, facilitated foreign residency by setting up bogus companies. This network, based in Phuket, involved the Thai woman being listed as an executive or shareholder in over 270 companies. Under Thai law, while foreigners can operate businesses, they must do so as part of a joint venture with Thai nationals, holding no more than 49% ownership to protect local economic interests. The fraudulent scheme worked by listing foreigners as business shareholders or employees of these shell companies, thus enabling them to obtain work permits. Commander Puttidej Bunkrapue of the Economic Crime Suppression Division detailed how this service circumvented legal requirements for business operations and work permits. Foreigners, accused of operating a business without a permit, are summoned at Central Investigation Bureau in Bangkok, Thailand, Friday, May 31, 2024. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) The crackdown led to charges against 98 foreigners, including 68 Russians, accused of operating businesses without proper permits. This offense is punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of one million baht (£22,000). Additionally, 37 Thais have been implicated in related offenses. This illicit network is believed to have been active since 2016, with a notable surge in clients following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Chief investigator Krit Woratat confirmed that over 50 foreigners had been officially charged by Friday. Phuket, a well-known tourist hotspot, especially popular among Russians, has seen an influx of Russian visitors, with over 90,000 arrivals from 2019 to early 2024. Furthermore, the number of companies registered under Russian names in Phuket has dramatically increased, with over 1,600 registrations from 2023 to early 2024, compared to about 30 annually from 2016 to 2022. This story underlines the significant challenges authorities face in maintaining legal compliance amidst increasing foreign interest in residency and business opportunities in Thailand. -- 2024-06-01 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

British Man Arrested in Thailand for Posing as Tour Guide
webfact replied to webfact's topic in Koh Samui News
British man arrested on Koh Pha Ngan for illegal tour operations by Ryan Turne Image courtesy of Khaosod Police arrested a British man in Koh Pha Ngan yesterday for illegally working as a tour guide, charging foreign tourists 70,000 baht each and enjoying free accommodations in Thailand. Reports received today detail that Deputy Superintendent of the Tourist Police Division 5, Sak Sirah Phueak-am, Commissioner of the Tourist Police, in collaboration with the district chief of Koh Phangan, had apprehended 25 year old Briton Jabrane Eelahi at a hotel in Ban Tai, Koh Pha Ngan, Surat Thani Province. Eelahi faced charges for working as a tour guide without authorisation and working without a legal permit. The operation followed complaints about a tour business on Koh Pha Ngan suspected of employing foreigners illegally as tour guides. Investigations revealed that Eelahi was leading groups of foreign tourists around the island and charging each tourist 70,000 baht. Authorities discovered that Eelahi had hired two silver vans to transport tourists to various locations, including Chinnarat Boxing Stadium and other attractions between 10am and 12pm. When questioned, Eelahi admitted to organising an 18-day tour across Thailand, starting from Bangkok and travelling through Khao Sok, Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Phi Phi, Phuket, and Chiang Mai. The tour of Koh Pha Ngan occurred on days five to eight of the itinerary. Eelahi stated that the cost of the 18-day Thailand tour package was £1,499 (70,121 baht) per person. He confessed to all charges during interrogations and was handed over to the Koh Phangan Police Station for further legal proceedings, reported Khaosod. The arrest highlights the ongoing efforts of Thai authorities to crack down on unlicensed tour operators and ensure that tourism-related businesses comply with legal requirements, serving as a reminder for foreign nationals seeking to work in Thailand to obtain the necessary permits and adhere to local laws to avoid legal consequences. The authorities continue to monitor and take action against illegal activities to protect the interests of both tourists and legitimate businesses in the country. Thai drug addict arrested after brutally assaulting 3 month old baby by Petch Petpailin Photo via SiamRath and MGR Online Police arrested a Thai drug addict for brutally assaulting a three month old baby in the Isaan province of Khon Kaen, leaving the infant in critical condition. Police arrested a Thai drug addict for brutally assaulting a three month old baby in the Isaan province of Khon Kaen, leaving the infant in critical condition. The infant, Captain, was admitted to Srinakarin Hospital on May 26 with severe injuries, including bite marks on his nipples, a depressed skull, and multiple bruises. He is currently on a respirator and remains under close medical care. Captain’s grandmother, Aoy, told Nam Phong Police Station officers that a drug-addicted Thai man, 30 year old Bird, was the attacker. Bird was a friend of the infant’s father who had been staying with the family due to unemployment. According to Aoy, the incident happened when Captain’s mother was out and he was sleeping with his father. When the baby cried, the father, who was in a deep sleep, did not respond. Bird, annoyed by the crying, took Captain outside and brutally abused him, biting his nipples, squeezing his face, and beating him. Captain’s father woke up to see Bird dipping the baby in a water tank and rushed to intervene. Bird claimed he was just playing with the baby and immediately left the scene to take methamphetamine, also known as Yaba. The family reported the incident to the police, leading to Bird’s arrest on the same day. However, they are concerned that Bird will be released as he claims he has worked as a spy for several corrupt police officers. Aoy expressed her disappointment, stating that Bird had been staying at their home for free and never helped with chores. She had warned Captain’s parents not to help Bird, as his drug addiction could endanger Captain and other family members, but her warnings were ignored. Captain’s grandfather, Paijit, told Channel 7 that he has been unable to face Bird since the incident due to his anger. He hopes the police will give him a proper punishment and not simply release him, as is often the case with other drug addicts. by Petch Petpailin Photo via SiamRath and MGR Online Full story: The Thaiger 2024-05-31 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Thailand Urged to Embrace Nuclear Power to Meet Carbon-Zero Goals Picture courtesy: We are CP At the recent Bangkok Post Conference 2024, Suphachai Chearavanont, CEO of CP Group, made a compelling case for Thailand to adopt nuclear power and artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve its carbon-zero and sustainable development goals. Picture courtesy: We are CP At the recent Bangkok Post Conference 2024, Suphachai Chearavanont, CEO of CP Group, made a compelling case for Thailand to adopt nuclear power and artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve its carbon-zero and sustainable development goals. This recommendation comes as Thailand faces increasing challenges to meet its environmental targets. Suphachai pointed out the urgency of these measures by referencing the United Nations' grim forecast that the world is on track to meet only 12% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. With Thailand ranking 43rd among 166 countries, time is of the essence. Global warming looms large, with predictions that temperatures could rise by 3.2 degrees Celsius by 2100 if current behaviours continue. To avert this, global carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced to 33 billion tonnes annually by 2030, a significant drop from the current 37 billion tonnes. This task is complicated by the anticipated 53% increase in electricity demand from 2020 to 2050. "Nuclear power is a viable alternative," Suphachai said, emphasising its practicality compared to other carbon-free energy sources like hydrogen. In 2021, nuclear power contributed 9% to global electricity production. Between 2022 and 2025, 32 new reactors are planned globally, with 19 in Asia alone. McKinsey and Company projects that global energy capacity will surge from 26,000 gigawatts (GW) in 2020 to 40,000GW by 2050, with nuclear power expected to contribute 23% of this capacity. Leading the charge, countries like the United States, France, China, Russia, and Korea are already heavily invested in nuclear energy. To close the gap on SDG targets, Suphachai proposed a comprehensive public policy roadmap for Thailand. This includes carbon taxes, corporate adherence to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, and leveraging AI for digital transformation. As Thailand's energy consumption climbs, the need for a sustainable and renewable power grid becomes increasingly critical. By turning to nuclear energy, Thailand could not only meet its carbon-zero goals but also align with global trends in sustainable development. In summary, addressing the growing energy demands through nuclear power, combined with robust public policies, could pave the way for a carbon-free Thailand by 2030. -- 2024-05-31 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
