  1. Thailand is set to host the filming for “Jurassic World 4,” the latest instalment in the iconic Jurassic Park franchise. The filming, directed by Colin Trevorrow, will take place from June 13 to July 16 in several picturesque locations, including Bangkok, Krabi, Trang, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Chiang Mai. The decision to film in Thailand came as a boon to the national economy, with expectations to inject around 650 million baht through a variety of local services. Businesses involved in equipment rentals, accommodations, venue hires, transportation, COVID-19 safety measures, and catering services are all likely to benefit from the influx of Hollywood professionals. Director General of the Department of Tourism, Jaturon Phakdeewanit, highlighted the significance of such international projects. "This is an excellent opportunity for Thailand to showcase its stunning landscapes and receive a substantial economic boost," he said. The crew will also take advantage of Thailand's incentive program for foreign films, which offers a 20% rebate for investments exceeding 100 million baht in the country. Among the film's stunning backdrops, the Huai To Waterfall within Khao Phanom Bencha National Park in Krabi province is one of the key locations. The lush, untamed landscape is expected to add a unique touch to the film's adventurous scenes. Park authorities are already making preparations to ensure the filming proceeds smoothly and without disruption. This latest project is set to capture the imagination of audiences worldwide while also bringing significant economic and promotional benefits to Thailand. By merging Hollywood spectacle with Thai natural beauty, “Jurassic World 4” aims to create an unforgettable cinematic experience. So, keep your eyes peeled and your cameras ready if you happen to be in Thailand this summer—you might just catch a glimpse of dinosaur magic in the making. -- 2024-06-03 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
  2. 3. In an effort to reorganise public spaces and enhance street cleanliness, Bangkok's Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has announced plans to enforce stricter regulations on street vendors within the city. This initiative underlines the city's commitment to fostering a more orderly and hygienic environment. Under these new regulations, vendors operating in officially recognised areas will need to comply with income assessments and taxation. Specifically, those earning over 25,000 baht monthly will be mandated to pay taxes. Additionally, all street vendors will be required to register with the national income and tax system to continue trading. Another critical aspect of the regulations is the strict enforcement of trading within designated zones. Vendors will need to ensure their activities do not obstruct pedestrian pathways and that their areas of operation remain clean. Non-compliance with these stipulations could result in a ban on their vending activities. While vending will still be allowed in certain areas, this will be conditional on adherence to the new rules. The overarching aim, however, is to phase out street vending progressively. The city envisions transitioning vendors into commercial zones and is seeking partnerships with businesses to offer affordable rental spaces for these vendors. The proposed changes are slated to go through a public hearing process, allowing community feedback to shape the final regulations. This inclusive approach underscores the city's intention to balance public order with the livelihoods of street vendors. As Bangkok takes these significant steps, the city hopes to create a harmonious urban experience that benefits both residents and vendors, leading to a cleaner, more organised public space. -- 2024-06-03 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  7. In a significant operation, Chonburi immigration authorities raided a plastic factory yesterday and arrested 34 illegal foreign workers. The Superintendent of the Chonburi Immigration Police, Pol. Col. Naphatphong Kositsuriyamanee, led the operation, joined by officials from the Department of Employment and the Chonburi Provincial Labour Office. The raid took place in the Wat Suwan sub-district, Bo Thong district, where a labour camp was discovered within the boundaries of a plastic factory. A substantial number of foreign workers were found busy sorting plastic parts in the camp. Upon the authorities’ approach, chaos ensued as the workers attempted to flee, with many trying to scale the perimeter fence. Despite their efforts to escape, officials successfully apprehended 34 foreign workers. The workers were taken to the Bo Thong Police Station. Of the 34, 23 were charged with illegally entering and residing in Thailand without proper documentation or work permits. The remaining 11 faced charges for failing to notify the relevant authorities about their employer, workplace, and nature of their work within the required 15-day period. Authorities believe the factory has been employing undocumented workers for some time, evading regulations set by labour and immigration laws. The case highlights ongoing concerns about illegal employment practices and the exploitation of migrant labour in the region. As part of the legal process, all apprehended workers are scheduled for deportation back to their respective home countries. The incident underscores Thailand's commitment to enforcing immigration laws and protecting the rights of legal workers while deterring illegal employment practices. This raid is a part of a broader crackdown on illegal workers, reflecting increased vigilance by immigration authorities to curb such activities and ensure legal compliance within the nation. The authorities have pledged continued inspections and strict enforcement to address these issues comprehensively. 9. The Thai government credited a visa-free policy for a significant rise in Indian tourists booking accommodations in Thailand. Announced by government spokesperson Chai Watcharong, the policy, active from May 11th to November 11th, aims to boost tourism and invigorate the Thai economy. This initiative follows Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin's introduction of the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) and complementary visa policies designed to make the country more attractive to tourists. Airbnb's recent data underscores the success of these measures, reporting a 60% rise in bookings by Indian tourists from 2022 to 2023. More strikingly, searches for Thai accommodations by Indian tourists on Airbnb have surged by over 200% in 2024, particularly during major holidays such as Holi and Easter. The top destinations for Indian visitors are Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, and Koh Samui. Chai pointed out that the data reflects a substantial interest from Indian tourists, especially younger travellers from Generation Z and Generation Y, who make up over 80% of Airbnb bookings. Their preferred settings range from properties with private pools to accommodations near beaches, national parks, and bustling urban centres. Typically, these travellers tend to book in groups of three to five or more, emphasising the social nature of their trips. Prime Minister Srettha expressed confidence in the visa-free policy and other tourism initiatives, highlighting their role in attracting foreign tourists. He believes that these proactive measures will continue to drive tourist numbers upward, thereby sustaining growth in Thailand's vital tourism industry. The government also indicated that further policies are in the pipeline to reinforce this upward trend in tourism. 11. A Wichit man was arrested following a seven-hour siege at his father’s car shop, with police seizing a small arsenal of firearms. The standoff, which saw residents gripped in fear, finally ended peacefully as the suspect tried to make a getaway in a luxury car that wouldn’t start. The ordeal began late Friday night when a distressed woman in Phuket alerted Wichit Police Station at 10.16pm about a dangerous situation at S. Charoenyont garage. Located across from the Phuket Villa 3 housing estate on Chao Fa East Road, the garage became the epicenter of a tense standoff. According to the woman, her son, 39 year old Worawut Upama, was heavily intoxicated and uncontrollably wielding firearms, firing shots recklessly. Upon receiving the call, Wichit police officers, led by Police Commander Colonel Chatri Chukaew and Deputy Lieutenant Colonel Atthawat Suwannarat, quickly established a perimeter around the garage. Reinforcements, including a SWAT team, were summoned to manage the volatile situation. The tense blockade lasted until 5.30am when Worawut attempted to flee in a black Mercedes-Benz. However, his escape plan was thwarted as the car failed to start, allowing the police to apprehend him without resistance. At the time of his arrest, Worawut did not have any firearms on his person but was carrying a shoulder bag. A search of the premises revealed a stash of weapons, including two shotguns, a knife, and a samurai sword. Despite initial reports, no rifles were found, and the ammunition recovered was limited to shotgun cartridges. Colonel Chatri confirmed that Worawut faces multiple charges, including possession of firearms without permission, carrying firearms in public without cause, discharging firearms in public, and consuming methamphetamine, reported Phuket News. The police have not disclosed whether the seized firearms were registered to someone other than Worawut. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Phuket News Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-03 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  15. Last week’s appointment of former deputy premier Wissanu Krea-ngam as the prime minister’s legal adviser surprised many observers, given Wissanu’s documented health issues and earlier pledge to leave politics for good. The 72-year-old suffers from cataracts as well as kidney disease that requires daily dialysis. Before announcing his “eventual retirement” from politics last August, Wissanu had served as legal advisor to a string of governments under eight prime ministers since 1991. His last boss was Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s immediate predecessor, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who is now a privy councillor. Wissanu served as deputy prime minister in charge of legal affairs for nine years under Prayut. Analysts speculated that he only accepted the job offer because it was made by figures in the “old power clique”, namely Prayut and General Prawit Wongsuwan, Wissanu’s fellow deputy PM in the previous government who now leads the coalition’s Palang Pracharath Party. The speculation is that Wissanu has been deployed to tackle legal issues facing the ruling coalition and ensure it survives for as long as possible. However, Wissanu denied that the old power clique, remnants of the 2014-2019 junta, were involved in his appointment. 17. Sixteen years on the run ended abruptly for a fugitive wanted for attempted murder after he taunted police on social media. On June 1, a team led by Montri Teshkan, Police Major General, arrested 35 year old Wuttichai, also known as Kay,in Chumphon’s Lang Suan district. Authorities had been searching for Wuttichai following an incident on April 10, 2008. That night, while drinking at a bar in Kathu, Phuket, Wuttichai got into a quarrel with another patron. The argument escalated, and Wuttichai stabbed the man before fleeing the scene. The victim reported the attack, leading to a warrant issued by the Phuket Provincial Court on April 21, 2008. “I was drinking and things got out of hand.” Wuttichai claimed that the stabbing was in self-defence. Since the warrant, Wuttichai had been evading capture, frequently changing jobs. His luck ran out when he posted a provocative message on Facebook, mocking the police’s inability to catch him. In his post, Wuttichai dared the police, claiming no authority could apprehend him. He even disclosed his location, boasting about his evasion skills. “Which cop dares to arrest someone like me? I’ve been wanted since 2007. No cop is brave enough. I’m in Ta Khun; come if you can.” This brazen act led the police to intensify their efforts. They discovered Wuttichai was working at a durian purchasing shop in Lang Suan. A plan was devised, and the team arrested him in the company’s parking lot, reported KhaoSod. During the arrest, Wuttichai partially confessed, admitting to the stabbing but insisted it was self-defence. He claimed the Facebook post was merely for show and did not expect it would lead to his capture. The police have since handed Wuttichai over to Patong Police Station to proceed with the charges. In related news, the Thai Ministry of Justice, in coordination with Indonesian authorities, successfully arrested a major fugitive in Bali, Indonesia, after he had been on the run since October of last year. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-03 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  19. Reports have emerged once more on May 26 of a troublesome trend in Pattaya: foreigners with young children in tow, struggling to speak Thai, are pestering tourists by aggressively hawking flowers and candies. Despite polite refusals, these persistent peddlers continue to follow potential customers, even tugging at their arms, creating a significant nuisance for holidaymakers. Witnesses have also reported groups of beggars, both local and foreign, positioning themselves strategically along bustling tourist hotspots such as Walking Street and Soi Buakhao. These beggars, often accompanied by very young children, appeal to passersby for spare change, adding to the city’s growing problem. Regular patrols and crackdowns by authorities seem to have little impact, as these foreign individuals mysteriously reappear, continuing to sell their wares and beg for money at various locations around the city, reported Pattaya Mail. This ongoing issue casts a shadow over the effectiveness of current measures aimed at curbing such activities. In related news, Bangkok police detained a 31 year old man in connection with a series of flower thefts at Pak Khlong market late April. The suspect apprehended at the entrance to Klong Toey Community, has confessed to the crimes, admitting to four instances of theft. The operation led by the Deputy Chief of the Pak Khlong Talat Police and his team followed the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Criminal Court on April 26. In other news, in a dramatic incident that captivated social media and sparked intense debate, three British tourists were violently assaulted by contracted guards following a heated argument over a bill on Pattaya Soi 6. The Pattaya police said there was nothing they could do about the brutal assault on the British men unless they came forward and lodged a complaint. The Brit who was kicked in the head came forward and filed a complaint with Pattaya Police on Thursday. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Pattaya Mail Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-03 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
  20. Thai Police and FBI Dismantle Major Global Cyber Crime Syndicate Picture courtesy: Facebook In a significant victory against cybercrime, Thai police, in collaboration with the FBI, have dismantled an international cybercrime syndicate, culminating in the arrest of the group's mastermind in Singapore and the seizure of over a billion baht's worth of assets in Thailand. The operation, spearheaded by Central Investigation Bureau chief Pol. Lt. Gen. Jirabap Bhuridej following a request from FBI attaché Mr. Mike Chai, targeted Mr. Wang Yunhe, a Chinese national identified as the ringleader. This syndicate had been spreading a malware known as 911 S5, which hacked the IP addresses of 19 million computers across 190 countries, leading to extensive financial damage. The criminals exploited this malware to commit a range of offences. They hacked into computers in the United States to fraudulently apply for welfare assistance, siphoning the approved funds into their accounts without the knowledge of the actual applicants. Additionally, they engaged in stealing cryptocurrency, executing ransomware attacks against major organisations, and peddling child pornography. Bomb threats were also made to incite widespread fear. The international crackdown saw coordinated efforts from multiple countries, including Thailand and Singapore. The cybercriminals laundered millions of dollars, purchasing real estate and other assets in several countries, with Thailand being a significant target. Among the seized assets in Thailand were 7.5 million baht in various currencies, luxury watches valued over 30 million baht, jewellery worth over 50 million baht, a BMW X7 M50d SUV, several land and condominium title deeds, bank accounts, and a flash drive containing critical encryption data and passwords. These items were confiscated during raids on a house in Bang Lamung district and three condominiums in Na Jomtien, Chonburi province. Authorities continue to investigate companies established by this syndicate in Thailand. The coordinated efforts highlight the crucial international cooperation required to combat sophisticated cybercrime operations effectively. -- 2024-06-03 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  22. Pattaya City Mayor Poramet Ngampichet has declared immediate measures following an alarming rise in parasailing accidents in the popular tourist destination. At a pivotal meeting held on Friday, May 31, Mayor Ngampichet convened with city officials and tourist police to discuss stricter regulations for parasailing operators in Pattaya. With activities ranging from jet skiing and sunset photography to banana boat rides, watersports are a significant draw for tourists visiting Pattaya Beach. Yet, the increasing number of parasailing mishaps has raised significant safety concerns. Police Lieutenant Colonel Piyapong Ensarn, leader of Pattaya Tourist Police, stressed the necessity for comprehensive regulatory measures during the meeting. “Our priority is to establish rigorous guidelines to ensure visitor safety,” said Colonel Ensarn. The discussion highlighted the importance of involving key agencies to develop and enforce these vital safety protocols effectively. One major proposal is to require parasailing operators to clearly inform participants about new safety guidelines and ensure insurance coverage for all activities. This initiative aims to provide tourists with reassurance that they are protected while engaging in Pattaya’s adventurous water sports. In another development, the Thai government's effort to enhance tourism faces scrutiny. A Chinese tourist who broke her leg while parasailing in Phuket criticised local service providers for prioritising profit over safety. She shared her harrowing experience in a video on Douyin, drawing attention to safety standards in Thai tourist services. In separate news, four French divers stranded overnight on a Sattahip island in Chon Buri were safely rescued on May 2. Their boat had drifted away from its mooring during a dive near Koh Manwichai. The move by Mayor Ngampichet to tighten safety regulations seeks not only to curtail accidents but also to rebuild trust among tourists, ensuring that Pattaya remains a safe and enjoyable destination for all. 24. Tragedy struck in Lopburi as a camping trip turned deadly for a group of friends, but quick action by a French expatriate saved two lives. On June 1st, 2024, Khok Tum police received an emergency call about three individuals drowning at the Bott Camping Ground in Mueang, Lopburi. Although two men were rescued, one individual remains missing. Upon receiving the report, Khok Tum police, rescue divers, and other agencies rushed to the scene. Thirty-two-year-olds Mr. Anon and Mr. Sumethi, who were pulled from a pond by the brave bystander, were transported to a local hospital. Both men were exhausted and had ingested water. According to initial findings, the group had gone camping for a relaxing getaway. In a regrettable turn of events, they consumed alcohol and decided to take a boat out on a nearby pond. The camp owner had cautioned them about strong winds and the lack of lifejackets, but the warning went unheeded. Ignoring the advice, Mr. Anon, Mr. Sumethi, and Mr. Rungwit, also 32, ventured onto the water. An hour later, their friend Ms. Phattharapon noticed they were in distress and alerted Anchalee, the camp owner. Sixty-four-year-old Mr. Brand, a French expat vacationing with his Thai wife, sprang into action. Armed with lifejackets, he paddled to the struggling trio. He succeeded in pulling Anon and Sumethi to safety but was unaware that Rungwit was also in the water. Mr. Sumethi later explained to rescuers that strong winds and turbulent currents capsized their boat while they attempted to return to shore. Despite their efforts, they struggled to stay afloat. As of now, the search for Rungwit continues in the six-to-seven meter deep pond. Picture courtesy: Khaosod -- 2024-06-03 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
